in being scared that the UK could leave the EU?

I'm an American here living here because I have dual nationality with an EU country.

I am married to my dh I have lived here for years but moved away 5 years ago and we came back this year. I have not been in the country long enough to apply for citizenship.

So what the fuck happens to me if you leave the EU?

What happens to knob head I mean Nigel Farage's German wife?

You're entitled to live here because your husband's British aren't you?

glenthebattleostrich · 09/05/2014 11:49

Then you would apply to stay just like most countries

Or they'll say those here legally are welcome.

OiYou · 09/05/2014 11:51

I can apply for a visa. That doesn't mean I will be accepted. Maybe not because I am a sahp. It isn't permanent leave to stay in the country either.

But, what about us? DH is an EU country, and I am from an EEA country? Our children are born here.

They may find that a fair few "knowledge workers" leave too. Not all of us foreigners are low life scum on benefits taking council homes and money. Some of us are high rate tax payers.

ikeaismylocal · 09/05/2014 11:54

I feel the same but I am British living in another EU country. I have almost lived here long enough to be able to apply for the right to live here bassed on my relationship with dp and legnth of time I have lived here. I hope if the UK does leave the EU they at least wait till I have sorted out my citizenship!

To complicate things further I was actually born in Scotland, I wonder what happens if they become independant, all very confusing!

QuintessentiallyQS · 09/05/2014 11:55

ikea, I read in Norwegian news that the faroe islands have spoken to Norway about becoming Norwegian, as Bergen is closer to them than Edinburgh. Confused

HowardTJMoon · 09/05/2014 11:58

It's not going to happen. Don't worry about it. There's no way that UKIP will get enough MPs in Parliament to force the issue and any referendum that might happen will a) be years away, and b) likely so watered down that full withdrawal from the EU will effectively be impossible.

OiYou · 09/05/2014 12:00

Ikea if scotland leave the uk, you'd be sorted. I think. Right? Confused

OP posts:
OiYou · 09/05/2014 12:02

howardtjmoon the conservatives are also inching towards a withdrawal and anti EU as well though aren't they or am I not understanding their platform correctly? (and it's very possible I am)

OiYou · 09/05/2014 12:03

I thought it was that they were part of a coalition governemtn that was tiying their hands.

I think Scotland would have to apply to 've part of the eu as a seperate county, I'm not sure though.

ChangedToday · 09/05/2014 12:04

Well that would evict about 50% of my neighbours / kids classmates, and separate me from my husband and kids too - and that's just counting the EU citizens. Totally ruin this local economy.
Even if the UK left the EU (oh horror) withdrawing rights from settled 'migrants' overnight would be quite impossible, even from a practical point of view. And yes I am entitled to apply for citizenship, I have no inclination to do so, and am proud my kids have both, furthermore I don't have that kind of money to spare.

I seem to recall Nigel Farrage actually qualifying a statement about skilled qualified migrants. So is he proposing a skills check at the border? Confused but yes of course he has his German wife 'justify'...

Birdsighland · 09/05/2014 12:07

But Quint, the Faroe Islands aren't Scottish. They're linked to Denmark aren't they?

OiYou · 09/05/2014 12:07

I bet miles of Spanish beach towns will be left looking like ghost towns when the British have to leave.

They're will be nothing left but vats of baked beans and HP sauce.

sorry, SHETLAND.

Oblomov · 09/05/2014 12:10

I am not sure that leaving the EU would be THAT bad.
staying in the EU?

I have read and read and am totally confused.
I am not convinced.
Every time I read an argument for staying, I think, yes that sounds valid.

Every time I read an argument for ' it wouldn't be that disastrous , if we left, ', then I think, yes that too sounds grounded and reasonable.

I don't know what to think.

ThePriory · 09/05/2014 12:15

I think you would be automatically granted British citizenship being married to a Brit, Nigel's wife will be a citizen for the same reason.

I truly don't see an EU exit happening though!

caruthers · 09/05/2014 12:18

The referendum on the EU can't come soon enough at least it will end the speculation and disarray.

ThePriory · 09/05/2014 12:21

The main reasons for leaving seem to be racist ones... and the main reasons for staying seem to be to benefit business only. It's all very confusing.

The trade argument, "It will be a disaster for trading economy in the UK if we leave" I don't buy... because before the EU etc, Britain had solid trade agreements with the all countries in Eurpoe anyway.

We can be a solid Europe without being an "EU"... I think the politicians who have their snouts deep in the EU trough very much want to keep them there, and will say anything to keep their cushty one.

ThePriory · 09/05/2014 12:23

OiYou lol, yes ... These Spanish beach towns are ghosts towns now anyway since the money ran out... Thanks to the Euro!

turgiday · 09/05/2014 12:30

I would hate us to leave the EU. Many rights we have now have been given to us by the EU against the Government's wishes.

For example without the EU we wouldn't have had the legislation requiring civil partnerships. The Government fought against this in the European courts and was told that it had to extend some rights that Het couples had, to gay couples.

We wouldn't have the level of annual leave we have. Again the Government tried to opt out of legislation giving workers various standards of minimum rights including annual leave. They lost and were told they had to implement it.

There have been loads of examples like this over the years. We would be a much more right wing country with less rights for workers and gay people, without the EU.

specialsubject · 09/05/2014 12:35

even if it did happen, there would not be a mass chuck out. That is war.

What we need is the attitude to the EU that most of the other members have - ignore the stupid legislation.

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2014 12:39

do you not have dual nationality with the UK it doesn't matter we are in or out of the EU, maybe thats a bit simple but I do think you will be ok,

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2014 12:40

we will never leave the EU anyway
