To think that this woman was rude?

I'm probably being a bit oversensitive due to the circumstances. I took my rat to the vet today to have a lump looked at. It's only round the corner so I walked home through the allotments. I said hi to a lady I know in passing, she asked what was in the pet carrier and when I said it was a pet rat she made a point of telling me how much she hates rats. He was in a pet carrier so I was clearly bringing him back from the vets and obviously I care about him. AIBU to think this was rude and unnecessary?

A little tactless, rather than rude, but such comments come with having rats, spiders, snakes etc as pets. Don't let it bother you.
Once my daughter (then 14) was in the waiting room of vets with her pet python. When I went to the loo, she took him out for a 'cuddle'. A woman waiting with her dog said "Eww, put that horrible thing away, it gives me the creeps" to which my offended daughter replied "well I hate dogs, so put that away!" (she doesn't really)
I was mortified when I found out (but a little proud Blush)
Rats are lovely, by the way!
