To have a treadmill in a first floor flat?

NickiFury · 03/05/2014 21:17

I wouldn't use it after 8 at night or early morning obviously.

Is it too unneighbourly though? So as not to drip, my neighbours do like to share their music with us Hmm but do turn it down if asked, I just would so love one and I would use it most days. I know this because it would be replacing a cross trainer I lost 8 stone of baby weight on over the years.

Opinions?

Well I have weighed everything up and I can't see the problem with potential damage to the building tbh. Like I said previously the tread mill is light, so am I, I won't he pounding it, just jogging for half hour a day.

this is the one I would get so not massively oversized or weight, it folds down etc.

My neighbours are fine with it and we are in HA flats that they've been in for years. They won't be moving. Obviously if they did I would rethink things but it's unlikely for a couple of years anyway.

My neighbours are reasonable because I always have been with them. They have three day parties for the Notting Hill Carnival with preparation that goes on for days. I always leave it an hour or two before I ask them to turn music down though usually I don't have to because I go out and it will generally have stopped before I get back.

Don't see why it would cause damage to the building- what a ridiculous suggestion! Surely if it's a converted house it's no different to having it in a spare room!

For goodness sake- it's half an hour a day, the neighbours are fine with it- no problems!

As long as they know they can say if it's causing a problem then I don't see the issue. If new people move in you can talk to them about it too!

Snoozybird · 04/05/2014 12:09

Nicki you said you heard cross trainers were better but felt you'd never had a hard workout on one, not wanting to sound funny but have you ever been shown how to use cross trainer properly? I only say that as I used to relatively enjoy the cross trainer despite thinking I was working hard on it, the gym instructor had spent time showing me what to do etc.

However last year I hired a personal trainer for a few months to get me in shape for my wedding and omg just ten minutes on the cross-trainer under her guidance was bloody horrific Grin Same goes for the rower which I'd also found relatively easy before then. I'd previously been going at the appropriate resistance/speeds etc and obviously had the basic techniques correct but just a few minor tweaks to my posture and technique worked all sorts of muscles that weren't getting a look in before. Just a thought in case the treadmill does turn out to be unsuitable.

NickiFury · 04/05/2014 13:26

Snoozy I've had that cross trainer for 11 years and lost tons of weight on it but I think my body is just so used to it now it doesn't feel effective anymore. It's also pretty much on its uppers and needs replacing anyway. I used to run outside a lot but can't now for previously stated reasons and also because it triggers my asthma.

I wouldn't be surprised if the housing association didn't allow treadmills in flats.

NickiFury · 04/05/2014 14:06

I guess if they allow people to be practising steel drums in the front garden for a couple of weeks of the year my treadmill 30 minutes, 5 x a week won't register too highly on their concern list.

ladypete · 04/05/2014 14:06

Cross trainer is on it's last legs and I just find it doesn't give as effective a work out as a treadmill.

Slightly off topic, but OP unless you can and will practically sprint, the cross trainer will burn far more calories per hour than the treadmill. It will also engage your arms.
Try doing interval training on it if you feel it's getting a bit "samey".

bishboschone · 04/05/2014 14:33

arr the floors strong enough .? my gym type treadmill weighs a tonne and with Me pounding on it even more !@!!

NickiFury · 04/05/2014 14:36

The one I want weighs 60 kg.

My DD and I dance flamenco in the upstairs bedroom of our split-level apartment. The noise/vibrations downstairs are pretty horrendous even if we don't use the boards (I don't but DD does) but carpet and don't go full throttle. Obviously can't dance early in the morning or late at night except for conditioning type exercises and Pilates. I try to keep to a set timetable so my neighbours know when we do it. Still, occasionally, if one of them is ill or has a headache, we have been asked to keep it down and that's no problem. We did try dancing in the garage space for a while but the concrete was horrible for our knees. That said, our neighbours of longstanding downstairs moved into the larger apartment next to us so we felt a bit relieved by that as they already knew we dance.

mimishimmi · 05/05/2014 02:11

Oops. Forgot what I wanted to say about the treadmill. Actually a heavier one would probably be more stable and have less vibration problems than a lighter one. They cope better with the impact too so the thudding footsteps would be less.

brdgrl · 05/05/2014 02:26

I get the feeling you had already made up your mind but were hoping for other posters to tell you it was ok, because you actually know it really isn't. You've even been dropping in little bits to suggest that your neighbours are inconsiderate themselves so therefore you'd be only justified...
well. Not that it matters to you, but YABU and your neighbours, if they said it wouldn't bother them, probably don't actually know all the problems (I didn't either, but having read this thread, I'd never consider having one in an upstairs flat now).

trinitybleu · 05/05/2014 09:06

We have a treadmill upstairs in our house, on carpet but no mats. I can't hear OH on it when I am downstairs ...

Pipbin · 05/05/2014 09:51

What I want to know is how you can afford to live in Notting Hill? Even in an HA flat I would think the rent would be huge.

NickiFury · 05/05/2014 10:21

"Dropping in little bits to suggest your neighbours are inconsiderate themselves".

Or just telling the truth about my situation? And why there would might be some give and take?

I hadn't made up my mind when I first posted but I think I have refuted a lot of the concerns eg the weight of a treadmill, whether my neighbour would be bothered etc.

I am afraid on this occasion, having discussed this matter with the only two people who may actually be affected by it in RL and who are therefore best placed to know the situation and having considered all the posts, i do not agree that I need to bow to the might of AIBU and I am sorry that annoys you, perhaps getting a life outside of MN (or even a treadmill to work of some of your frustrations?) might help you with that Smile.

Oh and I don't live in Notting Hill.

OP posts:
NickiFury · 05/05/2014 10:37

Out of interest Pipbin what makes you concerned that I might not be able to pay my rent?

OP posts:
brdgrl · 05/05/2014 10:53

Not annoyed, I don't have to live near you, thankfully. Just making an observation. Which seems to have touched a nerve.
As demonstrated by the overly hostile reply - you post on MN, I reply, you tell me I need to get a life outside MN. Hmm Yes, that makes sense...
I don't think a treadmill is going to fix your own frustrations, but hey.

ShergarAndSpies · 05/05/2014 10:54

Have you considered a rowing machine OP?

A good concept 2 one will give you a fantastic full body and CV workout and you'll be able to use it when you like as there's less noise issues.

NickiFury · 05/05/2014 11:11

You told me that I was drip feeding, that my neighbours did not matter to me "not that it matters to you" that they only agreed because they didn't really understand what was involved by having a treadmill (Confused How can you possibly know this?).

So I found your post quite aggressive actually and it made me wonder why something that could never affect you and was really just a general discussion would make someone react like that? I think my reply to you was on a similar level.

Perhaps don't dish it out if you feel so sensitive about receiving a reply in a similar tone?

That's a good idea about a rowing machine Smile. Will take a look.

OP posts:
Joysmum · 05/05/2014 11:24

Sounds perfect to me. You know when they go out as they have regular routines and they've said it is not an issue too.

Personally, I'd ask somebody to go on the treadmill and ask your neighbours if you could come round and listen to how much blouse it makes. Then I'd get one or 2 if the sound deadening mays and do the same. That way you can possibly use the tread mill even whilst they are there.

NickiFury · 05/05/2014 11:32

That's what I thought joysmum, those mats are supposedly qquite effective so definitely getting two if that works Smile

OP posts:
brdgrl · 05/05/2014 11:37

Nicki, I didn't actually say that. I said that I thought you'd clearly posted when your mind was already made up.

You told me that I was drip feeding, that my neighbours did not matter to me "not that it matters to you" that they only agreed because they didn't really understand what was involved by having a treadmill (confused How can you possibly know this?).
I suggested that your neighbours probably didn't know what it woudl mean to them, and said that I wouldn't have either before reading the ^informed and experienced* posts on this thread (you know, the ones you are completely ignoring because they don't apply to you and you are sure your neighbours wouldn't mind...). Of course, if you want to now paint a completely different picture of your neighbours and tell me how they are well aware since one of them runs a mile on a treadmill themselves every day, or how they're actually treadmill salespeople, go ahead.

OP: AIBU?
Dozen reasonable posts speaking from experience: Yes, YABU.
OP: Well, none of those points apply because I'm special and anyway, my neighbours are inconsiderate so I don't care.

Fine then.

Only one of us has asked for opinions on this thread, and that was you. You asked if YABU, I said that you were.

I wouldn't use it after 8 at night or early morning obviously.
I think it's pretty obvious from your attitude here that you totally will. You'll find a reason why it is OK, or why they 'won't really mind, after all...' and you will.

Pipbin · 05/05/2014 11:50

Out of interest Pipbin what makes you concerned that I might not be able to pay my rent?
I'm not concerned, you clearly can because you are. It's just that I understood living in Notting Hill was akin to living in Monaco. I'm amazed that anyone who isn't a multi millionaire can live there. Of course you may well be a multi millionaire.

As for your situation, it sounds like your neighbours are a noisy pair. If this were a regular set of flats with quiet neighbours then I would say no. It sounds like these guys have full on band practice there and have little consideration for you or your children, so go for it.

NickiFury · 05/05/2014 11:55

I don't need to find a reason that it's ok. It is ok Grin. All points and concerns have been dealt with. I'm not ignoring anything. I've answered every concern. And yet again, you can have no possible clue of the dynamic and set up I have with my neighbours. A tread mill in a first floor flat would annoy YOU. Are you really so limited that you can't see that there may be a situation where it wouldn't be an issue. Is your world view the only one that can possibly matter? Hmm

Let me also point out that all YOUR concerns are based on what YOU, a person who has never met me thinks I might do in the future. Please explain why you believe I will "obviously" use it after 8 when I have specifically said I won't? My children will be in bed then too and I certainly have no interest in disturbing them. Do you make a point of accusing people on the basis of what you believe they might do in the future in RL too? How strange.

I'm so sorry that my decision and the outcome hasn't been determined by AIBU, but honestly it doesn't have to be, it really, really doesn't.
