AIBU to think that 28 sets of clothes for each person for a 2 week holiday is to much. Me and my dp are taking our 5 kids on holiday and he thinks we should have a different set every day and night but I think its to much.

that is ridiculous where does he think you will be eating every night that they need a change surely you can swap clothes seriously good luck with that I dont think we have 28 changes of clothes

proudbi · 01/05/2014 19:23

My dp has just tryed to pack one suitcase and couldn't fit everything in but still thinks it is doable.

Do you have Wine in hand, proudbi? Are you sitting on sofa bemusedly watching him get on with it?

ForalltheSaints · 01/05/2014 19:26

28 sets of clothes! Who has that many? Are you a member of the government secretly posting on MN?

HolidayCriminal · 01/05/2014 19:29

I don't think I actually have enough suitcases to pack 28 changes of clothes in for all 6 of us.

HillyHolbrook · 01/05/2014 19:33

I take a clean tshirt/vest for every day or else I'd reek and they get covered in sweat and suncream, but I rotate evening bits as I don't sweat like a pig once the sun goes down. I also wear the same shorts and skirts on rotation as I don't really get sweaty thighsGrin

I only take 3 bikinis so I have one to wear as the other couple dry.

soontobeslendergirl · 01/05/2014 19:34

For during the day, for my kids I take 2 or 3 pairs of swimming shorts and 2 sun safe tops. For 2 weeks, I take them about 8 tops (shirts/polo shirts or t-shirts) that could be worn a couple of evenings each and would do as a spare for during the day once they've been worn at night. 3 or 4 smarter shorts for evening or for day trips and a couple of pairs of light football type shorts. socks and underwear for evening and the wear the underwear to bed with a plain t-shirt if needed. 1 pair of long trousers - usually the ones they've worn to travel in and 1 or two long sleeve tops/hoodies. My Oh takes a bit less than that and I take a little more probably. 28 outfits each is ridiculous.

proudbi · 01/05/2014 19:41

I am sitting with a glass of Wine laughing. We don't own 28 sets of clothes each my dp wants me to go shopping for more.

Then you may as well buy knock-off cheap as chips clothes there as another poster suggested.

Come on, hand him his own Wine and persuade him to concede defeat.

NickNackNooToYou · 01/05/2014 19:48

We're going to The Canaries (me, DH & DSx2) for 10 days and just taking hand luggage. I pack light Wink

DrCoconut · 01/05/2014 19:50

I have to work on getting DH to consider what to take at all. He's just not bothered about clothes and would think anything beyond one on and one in the wash is mad.

dizzyday07 · 01/05/2014 20:06

If your youngest is 1 they wont have their own allowance so all their bits will need to be packed in with somebody elses clothes and you will need nappies etc too!

Is this for real?

pictish · 01/05/2014 20:16

Five tops and six bottoms (or vice versa) per person would give thirty different outfits, slightly more than OP's DH's 28 outfit requirement but eminently more portable. And if the DCs are similarly sized, they could share/swap items to generate even more combinations.

Or have i missed something?

AMumInScotland · 02/05/2014 13:20

It would be funny if he didn't expect you to go out and buy all these clothes, and then for you to wash them all when you get back.

If he wants to see how much room it will all take, then he could try packing 4 sets of clothes for each of you - that will show the 'average' between the tiny and the fullsize clothes for each of 7 people.

If he can get all that into one large suitcase, then you will both know that it's going to take 7 fullsize suitcases to do it his way.

Then you could point out that nobody ever sees families at the airport with a fullsize case for each person, even the smallest child.

If he is so pointlessly stubborn as to insist even when it is obviously wrong, then I'm not sure what the answer is, apart from just being equally stubborn in return, and refusing to play along.

attheendoftheday · 02/05/2014 13:20

Surely it wouldn't fit in the case. Wash things in the bathroom sink if necessary!

Artandco · 02/05/2014 13:21

Ha that's a crazy amount. We spent 1 month in Oman recently. We took x2 medium suitcases, x2 hand luggage. For myself, dh, ds's age 4 and 2

For the kids

X2 chinos
X3 shorts
X3 long sleeved shirts
X2 jumpers/ cardigans
X7 t shirts
X1 sandals
X1 moccasins
X7 pants and socks
X2 swim shorts

On plane wore jeans, long sleeve top, jumper and blazer. Smart boots

Adults we took approx a weeks worth of clothes also. For me that was a few dresses for various occasions, few trousers, tops, cover up things etc. dh basically few chinos, 5 shirts for work, few leisure tops, etc.

The handluggage included x2 laptops as working, iPad and various odd bits but basically just large handbag for me that fitted laptop, and large should bag for dh. Spare pants and Tshirt for boys and few toiletries, passports etc... Few tiny books. Never really take entertainment on flights for them. They read in flight magazines, watch films, eat, sleep, and explore airports.

WheresRyder · 02/05/2014 13:28

he wants to pack too much and you too little. For a 2 week holiday somewhere hot, id pack
2/3 swimsuits
6/7 pairs of shorts
6/7 tops
3/4 dresses
2 pairs of flipflop type shoes
1 pair of nice sandals

for the boys instead of dresses would be 1/2 short sleeve shirts

underwear I'd pack 3/4 bras, assuming id be in swimwear most days, and 14 pairs of pants/knickers as hate handwashing pants!

id then wear something to the airport that could be reused on holiday, so as its cold here still a lighterweight dress with leggings and a cardi, or a maxi dress with shrug/cover up and the heaviest of my shoes so to keep weight of case down.

be warned they have a maximum weight per case now, so even though you might have a combined baggage allowance, if your case is heavier than x amount of kg, you will have to repack/leave stuff behind or run and buy a bag in the airport.

GreenPetal94 · 02/05/2014 20:27

You don't need that much. If worst comes to worst young kids can wear clothes that are not 100% clean.

One year we lost a case with ds1's clothes in for 12 out of the 14 days. So he and ds2, who were luckily similar in size, shared the clothes I had taken for ds2. All was fine.

After that I always pack half of what I packed before.

The one thing I did used to fill up the case with was nappies as my boys were always in a huge size of pampers that was hard to find abroad.
