AIBU to think that 28 sets of clothes for each person for a 2 week holiday is to much. Me and my dp are taking our 5 kids on holiday and he thinks we should have a different set every day and night but I think its to much.

The kids range from 15 to 1. My dd15 wanted to take 14 pairs of shoes but told her only 2.

In my house by age 15 they would be given a suitcase and told to get on with it. If they make packing mistakes (all shoes, no pants etc) then that is their problem.

Skivvywoman · 30/04/2014 20:25

I normally take 7 day outfits and 7 night outfits for us all and 7 swimming costumes/shorts
And I buy cheap packs of knickers from primark for every night but they get binned

SleepySuitcaseSheepie · 30/04/2014 20:27

3/4 swim suits
3/4 - over the top dresses/skirts and tops or tops for boys to walk around in and cover shoulders
3 smart outfits
3 day trip type outfits

Plus underwear x 10 (As a nanny find children who aren't used to swimming costumes and spends all day in the lyrics type material get thrush/nappy rash where it rubs so spare underwear for under swim shorts or girls can just wear knickers)

Water shoes (ie jelly type shoes) flip flops and smartish shoes!

Plus hats, sunglasses, socks, arm bands?

SleepySuitcaseSheepie · 30/04/2014 20:28

Pjs - can be vest and knickers/pants so not as much!

Ememem84 · 30/04/2014 20:36

I'm off on holidays on Saturday. Packing 2 bikinis, 2 shoes (a third pair will be worn), 2 shorts, 2 crops, 1dress, 6 Tshirts couple of cardigans. Jacket. Jeans(wearing) and undies. Working on the principal that I'll spend a couple of days by the pool so on those days will only need clothes for dinner. Can the. Repeat top from dinner next day suing daytime.

proudbi · 30/04/2014 21:53

My do would expect me to do all the washing.
littlewhitebag my dad would put much clothes in suitcase so wouldn't trust her to pack her own.

You give him the suitcases, a set of scales and the website.
You tell him, by his standards he has to pack 28 outfits for everyone plus an insane amount of shoes for everyone. In the suitcases provided, in the limits set by the airline.
If he goes over, then he can refer to the website to see the excess charges.

He is quiet simply insane.

Bloodyteenagers · 30/04/2014 22:02

Oh and there are laundry services everywhere worldwide. Sometimes it a simple lake.

Fourarmsv2 · 30/04/2014 22:06

I had amoebic dysentery last time we went abroad in a hotel. I sent everything we had for laundering in the hotel because I was sweating profusely and wanted clean clothes.

Came home with no washing to do at all :)

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 22:10

I tend to take 3 swim suits each, flip flops, trainers and nice shoes, cheap H+M sundress things for the day (7) a couple of pairs of shorts and some t shirts, enough nice evening things to wear twice and lots of pants and cardies for the evenings

that would be for about 10 days

for the kids ... I tend to pack everything Grin

proudbi · 30/04/2014 22:57

I told dp there wouldn't be room in the suitcases dp's idea was to roll all the clothes up.

OP posts:
whois · 30/04/2014 23:13

Obviously that's too much!

Do some teaching about a 'capsule wardrobe'. Anyway does he really think you're all going to make two outfits per day unwearable dirty and smelly? Highly unlikely unless you've got a serious hygiene problem.

It won't take any time at all to wash out the kids tops or dresses if they get mucky eating dinner.

whois · 30/04/2014 23:16

*7 swimsuits

just one is fine.

they get washed when you swim.

you hang them up

they dry*

SEVEN swimsuits? Yeah he's got some strange ideas.

Although in more of a 2 swimsuit packer. Wear one in the morning. Maybe take it off at lunchtime of your getting I to the car or going to a restaurant or sitting in the apartment, and it's nice to put a dry one back on after lunch.

UrethraFranklin · 30/04/2014 23:18

I'll be taking that much for DD Blush the clothes are tiny anyhow and she's messy. I won't be taking that much for myself though, I never end up wearing half of what I pack!

WooWooOwl · 30/04/2014 23:19

I think the ideal is somewhere between what you and your DH think.

28 outfits is too much, but three pairs of shorts and 6 tops is nowhere near enough!

You should have plenty of baggage allowance with 7 seats between you, there's no need to scrimp.

Blueandwhitelover · 01/05/2014 07:35

We've been to Tunisia. He is taking far too much. Take much less-you can buy fake brand name clothes over there for a pittance so if you do get desperate you could always do that.

RoganJosh · 01/05/2014 07:41

Take some handwash liquid in a small bottle in case you need to wash things.

Does he change clothes a lot at home? If you've only worn things for a few hours then they're ok for another wearing, surely?

TheRealAmandaClarke · 01/05/2014 08:05

You'll only have six seats between you.
Your dh is unhinged.
I am guilty of overpacking for every holiday but I can't imagine ever taking that much.
Anyone who "needs" 28 outfits for their holiday can pack for themselves.
Have a lovely holiday.

HolidayCriminal · 01/05/2014 08:07

My dd15 wanted to take 14 pairs of shoes but told her only 2.

I feel your pain. DD wants to take at least 7 prs. She has a bag of carryon that is just ballet flats (sigh).

I've seen hangingg scales in pound land for weighing luggage. Invaluable. I have a single checked bag limit, max. 23 kg each bag, plus 2 small carry-on bags (carrier bag size each).

Evening clothes? Wtf are they? Unless you're talking about a fleece to pull on over the top of whatever we've been wearing in the day.

I'd take, for myself: 2 x trousers, 2 x shorts, 3 x skirt, 2 x dress, as many t-shirts as I own (about 7?) 2 x long sleeved tops, 2 cardis/jumpers/fleeces, sandals, converse, flip flops, 1 swimming costume, pjs.

I'd take similar amounts for each daughter (although would probably fling in a couple more pairs of shorts if they have them). Husband would have lots more t-shirts as he seems to have hundreds of the things. He'd also have a couple more pairs of trousers. No skirts or dresses, unless he's got something to tell me, but a couple of sets of cycling gear instead.

AwfulMaureen · 01/05/2014 12:22

We just take a set for each of us which can be combined.....three pairs of shorts for the kids, one dress, one cardigan, one pair jeans or trousers and two swimmers 4 or 5 t shirts and perhaps a fleece jumper. Trainers and flip flops...my wardrobe more or less mimicks theirs!
