Is my child the only one who never has any of the following in her lunchbox:

hummus/hummous
chorizo (have no idea how you pronounce it)
smoked salmon trimmings
a spinach cake
homemade pear and ginger muffin
guacamole
bagel with pastrami & smoked cheese
Cous cous
minted lamb

any kind of fruit, veg or salad

Please tell me that there are MNetters who send their children to school with a cheese sandwich on white bread, a frube and a Penguin?

And squash (the drink not the veg).

I'm a bit Shock too at some of the lunch-box threads. I'm widely regarded as a food nazi in RL because I give mine fruit and yoghurt with their sarnies instead of crisps and biscuits, but plenty of people seem to regard frubes as the work of the Devil.

I just can't be arsed to make anything fancy for lunchboxes tho. Having to think of something for dinner everyday is more than enough for me.

coconut I love you. Ds is now 12 and at secondary school. All through primary, he refused to eat lunch at school, he didn't like eating in front of other kids, god knkws why. School lunches, packed lunches, all refused. He now buys a baguette or sub at school which is great, but he is living proof that stressing over packed lunches isn't important. He stand 5 foot 6, wears a size 9 shoe and is healthy. They all get there in the end, eaters and non- eaters

Smoked salmon trimmings are £1.50 in Morrisons for enough for 6 sandwiches. Aldi nice tuna is 80p and is only enough for 2 sandwiches. The salmon works out cheaper than Aldi tuna so is not pretentious.

no. my dd is vegetarian so any of the meat ones wouldn't make it in.
I like to use hummous as a spread, it's full of protein and great alternative to dairy

I don't think she's had any of the others. maybe gyacamole, that's really good for you.
homemade muffins are nice but I don't like pears so none of that

Oh I struggle with packing lunch.

The only things I've tried on your list OP are hummus (which is never touched no matter what I send to dip in it) and avocado (which mine like but is b%&ch to keep from going brown before lunch).

My kids don't really like sandwiches aside from peanut butter ones which they can't take to school.

A typical day:

-leftovers (think pasta with some peas thrown in)
-an apple sauce cup
-a white milk

or

-tuna sandwich + soup
-an friut sauce cup or a pudding cup
-white milk

Snack (pretty much every day)
-a fruit
-a greek yogurt
-some kind of crackers or pretzel sticks, possibly some raisins or a granola bar
-a water

They're just scraps of smoked salmon, I have them in my packed lunch (none for the DCs!)

Smoked salmon trimming feature in my cooking a lot. Including the dc's favourite tea- hot cooked pasta, hot cooked peas, smoked salmon trimmings and a tub of Philadelphia(or own brand equivalent).Black pepper. Seriously delicious. A squirt of sweet chill sauce if you feel so inclined. In the door to on the table in 15 minutes max.

DS2 is vegetarian and eats very healthily at home. The stuff he takes to school is usually 100% shite, unless I've bought strawberries that are miraculously both still in the house, uneaten, and not manky, by the next morning. By 'shite' I honestly mean utter crap - biscuits, cheapo cake bars, hunks of plain white bread. Any real food is left until he gets home, and I've long since stopped bothering to pretend to myself that he'll eat it at school. Thankfully there are no lunchbox police, so I just have to hope he eats enough useless bulk to keep him going till 3pm. My only comfort is that I've tried the school dinners on several occasions, and they're almost equally pointless in nutritional terms.

Catesmoked salmon trimmings are just cheap, packets of little bits of smoked salmon. I assume that they are left over bits when the salmon is being sliced. Fine for sandwiches or salmon paté but not pretty enough to serve as smoked salmon.

You left carrot and celery sticks off your list.

I've never made a packed lunch ever for anyone. My son had school lunches from Primary 1 to Secondary 6.

I'm not so bothered about what other people put in their kid's lunchbox, if someone asks for inspiration for non-sandwich based lunch I'll share what my dcs have, which is often flask food - leftover stews, curries and pasta or something I've made in bulk and frozen in portions for lunchboxes.

The dcs do put up with being judged at school for their unusual lunch, so the judging goes both ways, but they don't like sandwiches - and the school dinners are shit, so I can't really blame them for not wanting to eat them.

I put dunky things in my dcs lunchboxes.
They are cheese and breadsticks. So not exactly on a list of controlled substances.
They both love hummus. But ds has a fondness for ham sandwiches and Id like to help him branch out with the main component of his packed lunch.
Its hard to be creative with packed lunches.

Where do you get those kids unbreakable wide necked flasks? I feel they are missing from my life

My children have all sorts in their lunch boxes. Including things like sushi. But most of the time it'll be a sandwich, a piece of fruit and a packet of crisps or some other treat.

When they were little their fruit would often come back unbeaten (I think they were eager to get outside) so I stopped sending fruit in and just gave them a big platter of fruit when they got home from school. That way nothing was wasted and I knew they would sit in front of the telly and eat it all up.

Are these salmon trimmings frozen? Ive just googled them.
Ive read they can be quite slimy do people add them to things (like what?) Or just put them on a sandwich on their own.

Sorry im not a fish person so have no clue!

Amazon does the flasks. We got some from Aldi last year in their Aisle Of Crap.

It is a cultural thing I guess. My DC eat food that is the norm for us but some children wouldn't go near it.
Chickpeas straight out the packaging, okra, feta cheese, olives, rollmops. They are not at school yet but I am guessing they will be kids with the strange lunch box contents.
