to be really upset about ds chicken pox scars

Dd had cp 2 weeks ago, she has a few lolittle marks left and a crater on her back, nothing major but my poor beautiful 10 month old ds had them in his eczema on his face and he's full of little craters on his face and chin. I know it's shallow but I'm heartbroken about his beautiful little baby face :(

My DD had really bad CP marks on her face as a young toddler, they are gone now (she is five)

ladypete · 30/04/2014 11:26

Try this OP if you think it's suitable. It's incredible for scarring including textured scarring (Zoe pitting)

Says it's good for eczema too.

ladypete · 30/04/2014 11:27

(Pitting) *

Sallystyle · 30/04/2014 11:28

My 15 year old had it really badly when he was four years old.

His scars did fade to nothing. He has one right in the middle of his forehead though that doesn't bother him at all, but the rest have gone.

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 30/04/2014 11:36

Dd had horrendous cp at 3.5. She is nearly 7 and has 5 or 6 pitted, obvious scars on her face. Just part of her but upsetting at first.

VerucaInTheNutRoom · 30/04/2014 11:38

DS (5) is just recovering from chicken pox. Luckily he didn't get many on his face but he did have two big ones on his forehead above his eyebrow. The scabs have fallen/been knocked off and it looks like he will be left with scars, one is really bad even though he didn't pick at it and it wasn't infected. He seems to scar very easily so I doubt they will fade to nothing. Once the skin has healed I'm going to try rosehip oil. I've been feeling a bit down all morning about it, his poor wee face :( However, it could have been a lot worse and it probably won't look quite so awful in a few months. Just waiting for DD (3) to come out in spots now...

AwfulMaureen · 30/04/2014 11:41

OP my 9 year old has just had them BAD and her chin has a cracker on it....I#m a bit Sad but really, it's going to stretch...I have Bio Oil at the ready and will accept it.

TheTertiumSquid · 30/04/2014 11:42

My DD and DS had scars. We used wheatgerm oil which is full of vitamin E. Got it from Holland and Barratt. Now 9 months later you can't see a single scar on either of them, and my DD especially had big pits on her skin.
Try not to worry OP. I did find it heartbreaking too but they really will fade.

Sunnydaysablazeinhope · 30/04/2014 11:43

I had cp as a child and scars by my eyes. Made my mum so upset at the time.

Barely saw them once I grew a bit. Now couldn't tell you exactly where they were tbh. Age will change them

ilean · 30/04/2014 11:45

YANBU, their little soft pure skinned baby faces are mesmerising. I would be upset too.

Try pure vitamin e oil capsules / rosehip oil / wheatgerm oil as pp have said. Fushi is a lovely brand for high quality products.

PersonOfInterest · 30/04/2014 11:45

They'll continue to fade for absolutely ages. More than a year in my experience.

addictedtosugar · 30/04/2014 12:19

We are 5(Ds1) and 8 (DS2) weeks past chicken pox.
I started a thread on Nm a few weeks ago about the scars, but even in the few weeks since then, they have faded.
Not gone yet, but 1000 times better than they were.

Keep the faith, keep his skin as healthy as you can (eczema here too), and give it time.

jellybeans · 30/04/2014 12:23

I was the same when 2 of mine had deep holes on their faces. However once they get older they are barely noticeable and just very light white. My teenage DD has never been bothered by hers so don't worry too much. YANBU to worry, try some bio oil and scar plasters to help as well. They will improve massively.

nennypops · 30/04/2014 12:24

Apparently this stuff is fantastic for scarring - recommended for operation scars, and there was an article in the Sunday Times recently also recommending it and suggesting it for chicken pox scars. However, I second the idea of waiting some time to see how ds' skin settles down.

dawndonnaagain · 30/04/2014 12:25

Ds (now 29) had a crater on his neck after chicken pox. It was a spot and got infected, it took months to clear properly and scared really badly. It was about an inch across. It looks like a small freckle now, and you have to look for it.

Catflap1 · 30/04/2014 12:26

It's still early days give it time, it will improve!

I do you hoe you feel my youngest had a bad accident 3 months ago that required her to be stitched up by a plastic surgeon, I was gutted!!!

Three months in its healing well still have a long way to go but it is improving massively

sometimessunshine · 30/04/2014 12:29

My child was badly scalded 2 weeks ago, it is amazing what he looks like now compared to how he looked 2 weeks ago. The consultant has said that he should be completely scar free as the skin has healed within 2 weeks (it is still very red and pitted in a few places) I can understand why you are upset but i'm sure that they will fade and eventually be gone.

cardamomginger · 30/04/2014 12:30

Poor DS. If he is under a dermatologist for his eczema, can you ask him/her what to use?

BarbaraPalmer · 30/04/2014 12:30

dd2 had chicken pox when she was about 18mo

unlike when dd1 had it, it took ages for the marks to fade. Six months after she had it, her skin was still very marked, and we assumed that she would have these scars forever. However a year later these had all gone.

ralphi · 30/04/2014 12:33

you can buy scar gel from Boots, am not sure though whether it is suitable for skin with eczema. It definitely works.

anotetofollowso · 30/04/2014 12:36

OP OF COURSE you are heartbroken at the sight of scars on your beautiful, perfect little baby's face. And yes, of course, there are much bigger things to worry about and those scars won't influence your child's life one way or another. But I totally understand. I have no personal experience of chicken pox scars but it is my experience that many scars and scratches on a baby or toddler are invisible by the time they are older.

Good luck! And sympathy.

MillionPramMiles · 30/04/2014 13:13

Try not to worry, they will probably fade. My niece's eczema became infected when she had CP but the scars did fade.

I know so many toddlers with eczema that has become very aggravated or even infected due to CP. I think its ludicrous the NHS still fails to offer vaccinations to children for CP (other countries do), particularly where children have other conditions that could be affected. It can be a really nasty experience for some toddlers.

DenzelWashington · 30/04/2014 15:59

Apparently the vaccine isn't effective enough to make it worthwhile.

ZingWatermelon · 30/04/2014 16:14

oh I can see why you are upset.
when DS1 had CP he had a few scars on his back, one above eyebrow and I was devastated.
all I could think was "my baby's perfect, beautiful skin is ruinedSad"

most of them stretched & faded as he grew. I never thought to treat it with anything - but have you thought of using Bio Oil on your DS's skin?
it is supposed to improve scars, marks etc.
also zinc based creams are good for helping skin to heal.

try either/both

I hope he's appearence will improve when the CP is over.
Thanks

ditsydoll · 01/05/2014 22:40

Thanks everyone for being so kind and for the great suggestions.
Ds looks a little better today and some of the scarring looks as if it will be here to stay but not as bad as it could have been.
He's still absolutely every bit as beautiful as he was before :)
Once all the broken skin has healed up I'll start with some of the oils etc suggested.
For now I'm using E45 to keep the skin soft and help with the eczema, it seems to be helping.
