To wonder whether you'd prefer to go to Malory Towers or the Chalet School

I just heard to girls about 11 years of age having an earnest discussion about this on the bus. I didn't think kids even read Chalet School books any more.
I think I'd opt for Malory Towers. They seemed to have more fun. I'd probably be expelled from the Chalet School for cursing, wearing lipstick and forgetting to speak German every Wednesday or whatever it was.

AllMimsy I worked with a woman who would now be in her late-50's who had to leave a national bank when she got married. She was 'allowed' to pick up bank shifts (as and when cover for branches) until she had her first child, then wasn't allowed to go back until they were at school (and things had changed a bit). So this would have been late 70s, maybe even into the 80s - and women were compelled to leave, it wasn't always their choice.

I know that in Ireland up until 1973 women had to leave the civil service upon marrying.

I can remember seeing my mum tear up the jobs section of the evening mail as she was so angry at continually reading job adverts for secretaries stating attractive blond needed and must be slim and attractive

Must have been 1973/4. Around that time anyway.

Can you imagine? Unbelievable now.

I agree that women wouldn't have had anything like the career options that they have nowadays; and I was actually quite impressed when re-reading a CS book yesterday that the girls aspired to go to University (one even planning to do law). It was just the idea that before someone had even left school she was planning to come back and be a teacher there. The CS girls just couldn't seem to conceive of a world away from their beloved school!

MooncupGoddess · 06/05/2014 15:24

You've probably already done this, but have you tried opening Adobe Editions on your computer and then opening the file from there, rather than just clicking on the file from your desktop?

MooncupGoddess · 06/05/2014 15:25

Um, obviously that won't be much use if as Kate says Adobe Editions doesn't work with mobi files Blush
