to be pissed off about these Sondico football boots?

The DSs have just started doing football club and have to have football boots with studs. I bought them some Sondico boots which seemed like a reputable brand.

Now, a few months in, DS1's studs have worn down, and a couple have come off altogether. The boots came with a couple of spares, but I need more. So, I looked on the Sondico website - only a few sets of studs and not clear if any are for kids boots, or come in different sizes.

I rang their Customer Care line, got a very friendly chap who admitted he had no clue and was just looking at the same web page as me. He suggested we could try the metal studs, which would 'probably' fit. I bought them, and they don't, they're far too big - clearly adult studs.

None of the other studs on the website look anything like the ones on the DS's boots (different materials etc.)

I am really annoyed, as this makes DS1's boots close to useless, and I was expecting them to last a good while. Shame on you, Sondico!

Any tips for brands I should buy next time that do supply spare studs?

I never buy metal studs for dd hers are plastic moulded. I'm surprised they wore down in such a short space of time. Has ds been deliberately scuffing them down.

somerandomfella · 29/04/2014 12:10

Sondico are at the cheaper end of the market.

The best thing to do is to go to your local sports shop and try boots on. Adidas are the best quality but you'll pay an arm and a leg and then he'll grow out of them. Gola or Mitre the best value for money

I wouldn't touch Nike with a bargepole

SamG76 · 29/04/2014 12:14

YABU, I'm afraid - most kids' boots don't last longer than a season because their feet grow. Many leagues don't allow plastic studs at all, as they get worn down and can develop sharp edges.

rpitchfo · 29/04/2014 12:24

go into a shop, the shop assistants will know what they are talking about and the larger ones will have plenty of replacements studs.

TheNightIsDark · 29/04/2014 12:27

We got DS some Adidas ones for £20 in sports soccer/direct. They're metal studs. He's 5 so they definitely do childrens ones there cheap.

joydivisionovengloves · 29/04/2014 12:35

Get Adidas next time. Don't get Nike, they smell really bad really quickly!

drivenfromdistraction · 29/04/2014 12:37

I could cope with them lasting a season - but they have only lasted 2-3 weeks!

I did buy them from a sports shop - Sports Direct, but perhaps there are better shops? The assistant was useless.

At DS's football club they change into their boots and then run/walk across a tarmac area to get to the field, which obviously wears down the studs more. All I want is to be able to screw in replacement studs.

mysteryfairy · 29/04/2014 12:38

Do they walk across hard areas to get to the grass pitch? That wears the studs down really fast.

I've never known any boots last more than a season though.

OwlCapone · 29/04/2014 12:39

When you say metal studs, are they solid metal? If so, those are rugby studs.

OwlCapone · 29/04/2014 12:42

Actually, it appears they do make metal foot ball studs.

EvaBeaversProtege · 29/04/2014 12:44

Which is it then?

2/3 months in or a few weeks?

That will matter.

drivenfromdistraction · 29/04/2014 12:51

A few weeks Eva. They played in trainers to begin with, I got them football boots mid-Feb. DS1 had a holiday camp at the beginning of the Easter hols, and two studs had come out and several more badly worn down then. I suppose that's six weeks, though they must have been pretty worn down before that - I only noticed after two came out.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 29/04/2014 12:52

I have found that you cannot replace a couple of studs, you have to replace every stud on both boots otherwise it is uneven and "feels wrong"

DS1 and 2 have always had addidas boots. They have always been great, by the end of the season they are a bit worn down but nothing major.

drivenfromdistraction · 29/04/2014 13:27

That makes sense, Tantrums. Can you replace the studs on Adidas children's boots? Sondico just don't seem to sell them for theirs.

OP posts:
TantrumsAndBalloons · 29/04/2014 14:05

You can buy replacement studs but ds1 has been playing football for 9 years now and I have never had worn down studs that needed replacing.

drivenfromdistraction · 29/04/2014 14:32

Maybe it's just these Sondico ones? I will go for Adidas next time.

I'm a coach of an Under 8's side - and we have never had any kids who'se studs have worn after 2 / 3 weeks, even if they have had to walk across concrete/tarmac etc.

The "quality" of the boots shouldn't matter - if they have worn after this amount of time, I'd get in touch with the manufacturer (not the sports shop you bought them from), along with a copy of your receipt and photo evidence, and complain.

On a side note - Adidas, Nike etc are all excellent boots for kids, and are all available for under 30 as well either on the internet, or in store - we do tend to get my son's from Sports Direct, and have never had any issues with the actual product (staff are useless usually though..!). Also, if the boots are looked after well, they usually can sell for quite a high value (in comparison to what you pay for them) second hand on ebay :D

mercibucket · 29/04/2014 16:19

they are faulty

we had the same problem and i just got them replaced, also at sports direct

we always have metal stud boots (as well as all the others) and i have only had this problem once

BubbleButt79 · 29/04/2014 16:35

Also - if you can't be bothered - if you go into Sports Direct (other sports shops are available) you will be able to purchase sets of studs - there will be packs of 14 or so studs.

These will be usually located around the "stand" with Shin Pads, Goalie gloves etc - you can buy "own brand" (e.g. not Sondico, Nike etc) for around 2 for a pack. Simply buy the shorter ones - you can eitehr get "metal" ones, or metal-tipped.

mercibucket · 29/04/2014 17:01

with mine though, it was the thread that was faulty, hence why they fell out - have you tried putting one of the studs in the thread of one of the ones that fell out?

LeeLooLahLah · 19/05/2014 15:04

Oh crap. I'm having the same problem. Bought the sondico children's boots with the metal studs. My son has worn them twice and already 4 out of 6 studs on one boot have fallen out. I've been on the sports direct website and ordered the metal football studs made by sondico and they were the adult ones when they came. Went to the shop and asked for children's studs. They said they didn't sell them in store and I'd have to buy them online. Went back online and can't find them! I've been googling the boots and can't find any replacements anywhere. Instead I found this thread!!! I am so annoyed too. Sorry I can't help OP but wanted to share in your frustration instead!

whateveragain · 24/09/2014 12:03

Hello all, Same here ripped off by Sondico [and Sports Direct as they really don't make their stud sale very clear]. There don't seem to be any studs available for the child Sondico boots... I'll go and see if there are any adaptable in a sports shop. The only real answer is [Note to self and friends] NEVER BUY SONDICO AGAIN!
Have a good day!

abigamarone · 24/09/2014 12:11

Current football boots for my son are Nike, he sometimes walks to his mate's house in them for a lift, moulded studs, hardly any wear and he's had them for about 9 months. They still look great. I've not noticed any smells, but I'm not going to put my nose anywhere near them to check.

Notanexcitingname · 24/09/2014 12:11

YANBU. I have the same problem. Ours came with no stud key (probably nick from the box in the shop), studs fell out, and now cannot source replacements. None in-store, none on-line of the right size. I shall be complaining to sondico. Almost worth joining twitter for.

Jalug · 04/10/2014 20:25

Having same problem with these boots - both sons have lost studs. No replacements available ANYWHERE (looked online in several places.) Not impressed! Why sell boots with screw-in studs if no replacements available...???
