To want to food shop where I chose?

crystalgh0st · 27/04/2014 18:34

DP and I are trying to save for a big holiday and trying not to spend unnecessarily. Food shopping is an area that we could probably cut back on (buying basic products etc.).
I really feel comfortable (any one else have this when at a supermarket?!) shopping somewhere that sounds like "Mainsburies". I like their produce, I think they are reasonably priced and it is easy to get to from home. I also have a nectar card to collect points for money off shopping.
DP thinks it's too expensive. He suggested we try to shop at an alternative store, one that sounds like "Mazda". We went today and saved about £3. I didn't get any points and I didn't feel comfortable, didn't really feel like I "belonged". Sounds ridiculous, I know...

AIBU to want to shop at my usual? Should I compromise with DP and save the odd pound whilst longing to shop at my old haunt?

Bit of a preposterous question, I suppose, but I thought I'd ask on here!

If you're serious about money saving, then use Aldi/Lidl for basics like rice, pasta, frozen veg, coffee etc. I stock up on that sort of thing (and the dirt-cheap free-range chickens) there and then get stuff like yoghurts, veg etc at Sainsburys.

What I mean is it doesn't have to be an either/or.

HmmAnOxfordComma · 27/04/2014 18:52

I hate Asda and it's the only supermarket I won't shop in.

You need to swap to Aldi or Lidl for your meat, fruit, veg and yogurts and stick to Sainsbury's for the rest.

Or if you stay away from S's long enough, you'll get vouchers from them anyway. I've shopped mostly at Waitrose and Tesco for a few weeks. Went to S's this week and got a £14 off £70 shop voucher for next week.

Or cut something treaty out of your shopping. Biscuits, alcohol, fancy coffee; have an egg and chips night per week.

Loads of ways to save money.

Lilaclily · 27/04/2014 18:57

asda is full of 25 stone tattooed wimmin with at least 6 kids they scream at incessantly

I hate this type of comment

Why do some people think they're above other people just because of how much they weigh or how Many kids they have

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 27/04/2014 18:59

"Why do some people think they're above other people just because of how much they weigh or how Many kids they have"

Because they clearly have nothing else in their lives that makes them feel good so have to put others down to get kicks.

Joules68 · 27/04/2014 18:59

Very true lilac it's horrible

crystalgh0st · 27/04/2014 19:06

Lots of super advice here Smile

I think I might try buying basic staples ie: rice, pasta from Aldi because it is quite near. I think I will be cheeky and continue shopping where I like for other things (especially meat).
It's interesting to hear that vouchers come through after not shopping somewhere for a while! £14 off a £70 shop, wow.

To be fair OP, your DP is contributing half the money so you should be willing to compromise and not just do as you please.

One of the big issues between my exp and I was that although we both agreed to save for a house deposit- he didnt actually think it should mean cutting back on luxuries and would still spend like normal meaning after a fee months i had built up savings, he hadnt yet still expected that he would get full benefit of them when we bought a house. It caused lots of problems that contributed to the split. Better to both be agreed and on the same page.

coffeetofunction · 27/04/2014 19:12

I like the supermarket you like too, I do go there for some bits & peices but I've been converted to aldi. It's not local really but I LOVE how much we save. I rearly to never shop at asda, I find it poor quality, rubbish savings, & I end up buying stuff I don't actually want or need!!

If you want to save on shopping you could do a meal plan for the week/month them do your shopping online only buying what you need Brew

uselessidiot · 27/04/2014 19:14

If you really want to cut back you should get your basics from Aldi or Lidl, you can always top up at Sainsbury's if you want.

As for the snide comments about ASDA customers people are coming across as judgemental snobs. There's no need to be so nasty.

ContinentalKat · 27/04/2014 19:21

I did mysupermarket for a while, and Sainsbury always came out second cheapest after Asda, but only by a few £. I think Asda quality is shite, and took the downshift challenge in Sainsburys to save a few quid.

napoleonsnose · 27/04/2014 19:22

I used to do all my shopping in Tesco but having had a big drop in income I decided to give Aldi and Lidl a go. I'm astounded at how much we save. The first time I went to Aldi, I couldn't believe how much stuff I bought for £80. I even did a mock online shop at Tesco adding comparable items and the saving was over £40. Now I do my main shop in Lidl as its just down the road, sometimes I go to Aldi but its a twenty minute drive away, and get a few bits in Tesco. I don't like Aldi or Lidl softener or shower gels for example, so those tend to come from Tesco. I can feed all of us - 2 adults and 2 teenagers - for around £75 a week. It was costing us well over £100 in Tesco.

ladymariner · 27/04/2014 19:22

I've knocked approximately £25 a week off my shopping bill by switching to Aldi, sometimes more. I always shopped at Morrisons, our local one is really nice, but now I try to just go there about once a month to stock up on the bits and pieces Aldi don't sell.

Are you 32 stone with 8 children Wink ?

ouryve · 27/04/2014 19:25

Why not make a list and run up an online order at each store, to see which one works out the cheapest? If there's not much in it, stick to your guns. Though, if oyu do the majority of shopping, you should stick to your guns, anyhow, as Sainsburys is obviously much more convenient for you (and probably cheaper to get to, if that's the case)

LaurieFairyCake · 27/04/2014 19:26

I hate Asda so if I've noticed that they have a good 50 quid or rice/basics on special I will do online delivery

And I do hate it for snobby reasons. It's enormous and has a really stressful layout. The staff are poorly treated and look really grumpy and stressed. And the half a dozen times I've been there's been aggression in the car park, over trolleys and in the store.

It's just horrible. So I go to Aldi round the corner. Or get Ocado deliveries when I'm feeling lazy.

I'd certainly not go to Asda for a weeks shop to save £3.

I used to shop at morrisons but just didn't like it. Can't put my finger on why but I think they're quite expensive. Then switched to asda but I agree with others that I don't think the quality is very good.

Currently I go to lidl for a few bits and then across the road to tesco. Usually spend £80ish. I wish I could do a full shop at lidl but I'm just too fussy. I know what I do and don't like. I go to tesco because it's opposite.

Today, I did a shop at Booths (a bit like a Northern version of Waitrose) and didn't spend a significant amount more. I was impressed with the quality and the customer service so I think I will be back next week.

I say shop where you like but then I'm not saving.

crystalgh0st · 27/04/2014 19:32

ouryve - I did that this morning. Asda came up cheaper, but when we actually went I spent the same amount I would have done in Sainsburies.
I appreciate that its half of my DP's money too, hence why I was willing to have a shop somewhere else. I think we were both shocked with how little we actually saved.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 27/04/2014 19:36

Sainsburys is my favourite. I don't care if that makes me a snob

ginmakesitallok · 27/04/2014 19:39

We did our first shop in aldi today. It was OK. Saved a fortune though! 79p for asparagus! 45p for broccoli! Fuck all for passata. Usually spend about £80 in Sainsbury's or asda, £42 in aldi. Might have to pop in for some quorn rubbish for dp though.

DurhamDurham · 27/04/2014 19:42

I used to shop at Sainsbury's years ago....back when dh worked for them so we had staff discount. Can't believe the prices when I pop in there now.

I quite like Asda but although it's cheap I tend to spend a fortune when I'm shopping there. My 16 year old loves it when I've been to Asda, she said it's a much more 'exciting' food from there.

Usually though I stick to Aldi and Lidl, straight in and straight out. Buy all the meat, veg fruit, cheese and yogurts we need for the week without being waylaid by BOGOF offers and things I don't need.

I think my shopping is on average about £30 a week cheaper now than when I shopped in Sainsbury's ( even taking in account staff discount )

aermingers · 27/04/2014 19:44

Morrisons is much cheaper than Sainsburies. Noticeably so. My local shop is a Morrisons but the one near work is a Sainsbury's. I notice the difference when I pick things up near work. For example the same quantity of blueberries is £3 in Morrisons and a £5 in Asda.

But it sounds like going in a Morrisons would make you grab your pearls and expire with the vapours so perhaps not.

Meow75 · 27/04/2014 19:45

Aldi or Lidl most weeks here with top ups elsewhere for things like shower gel, dishwasher salt, sink plug hole unblocker which were all things we needed to get today.

DH was REALLY REALLY anti Aldi and Lidl, expressing opinions similar to ones being expressed about people who go to Asda by some on this thread.

Now, he's completely converted and bemoans having to go to Tesco, Sainsbo's or Asda as they are so expensive. Fortunately, Aldi & Lidl are same distance as Tesco & Sainsbo's and 15 miles nearer than Asda.

littlegreengloworm · 27/04/2014 19:48

I don't save money at asda at all.

I get meat from local butchers and go to aldi or lidl for veg, yoghurts etc.

We eat very well for little money. But I used to love Sainburys when I loved near one. There's a lot of temptation though. That's my downfall. At least at aldi you aren't tempted by much.
