to tell you all how impressed I am with the NHS?

I had a colonoscopy today (had a thread on that yesterday).Firstly, it's Sunday and they put on extra days to clear the backlog and minimise waiting times, which I'm already impressed with. Secondly, I was really impressed with the staff. They were all, without exception, lovely, friendly, caring professional individuals, who put me at ease when I felt anxious.

Bit pointless perhaps to post that here, and I'm still a bit fuzzy in the head, but NHS often gets such bad press, I just wanted to tell you healthcare professionals out there, you are doing a great job, and it's really an organisation to be proud off.

I read your thread yesterday where ypu were worried, so I'm really pleased that it has been a good experience for you.

I second being impressed with the NHS. I have a long-term illness and a huge team that looks after me - they are all absolutely bloody brilliant.

Sparklingbrook · 27/04/2014 12:10

DS1 (14) fractured his knee 4 weeks ago. Everybody involved from A&E, XRay to the Fracture Clinic to the Physio have been brilliant.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 27/04/2014 12:10

I am glad you had a positive experience and that all went well. I have worked in the nhs for 22 years and too had an op 10 days ago. It was day surgery and everyone was amazing. Good old nhs!

PansOnFire · 27/04/2014 13:03

The NHS saved my husband's life and enabled him to have a good quality of life through subsequent surgeries. The consultants he has been looked after by have been phenomenal, we couldn't have asked for more.

ohnoyou · 27/04/2014 13:05

Yes same as Sparklingbrook following our DS fractured wrist, couldn't fault the service and the caring attitude of all those we encountered.

odyssey2001 · 27/04/2014 13:10

NHS incompetence probably killed my mother (and certainly robbed us of many more months with her) and almost killed my father and grandmother. However they have been absolutely wonderful with both myself and my partner.

pommedeterre · 27/04/2014 13:12

The nhs saved my life and have since protected me and my babies in pregnancy amazingly. I heart them.

bigdeal · 27/04/2014 13:17

glad it all went well deadduck , its the waiting for appointments, surgery, physio etc that is the problem.

Tenrec · 27/04/2014 13:36

The NHS mean I am on medication and having emdr (a type of therapy) for CPTSD and has given me my life back with that.

FrontForward · 27/04/2014 13:38

I had a hysterectomy last year. They were amazing

makeminea6x · 27/04/2014 13:38

Yes we had a great experience with our local A&E when DS was ill the other night - was so impressed

Sirzy · 27/04/2014 13:39

Glad it went well.

Without the NHS DS would have died at 8 weeks old. He is 4.5 now and at clinics every 3 months and often at a and e inbetween and have only had one slightly negative experince with the local hopsital it that time.

WaitMonkey · 27/04/2014 14:17

Lovely that you've taken the time to post a positive experience. So often all we hear are the bad stories.
Hope you're feeling ok today. Thanks

I was on hospital one day last week, dd was admitted to a different hospital the same week.

On both occasi

EvaBeaversProtege · 27/04/2014 15:16

Occasions we were treated brilliantly.

FurryDogMother · 27/04/2014 16:00

When my Dad fell and had to have a hip replacement in Sept '12 they were totally brilliant. He was in 2 hospitals and an intermediate care home - and we were treated really well in all 3. The aftercare was amazing too. I know some people have bad experiences, but I like to think those are the exceptions rather than the norm.

Louise1956 · 27/04/2014 16:07

I think they're brilliant. My youngest son was taken ill very suddenly at the beginning of the year, turns out he has type 1 diabetes. The NHS staff were fantastic looking after him in hospital, and the diabetic consultant was quite divine, with a bedside manner you'd pay thousands for in Harley Street, and we got him for free. Since coming home he has been well cared for with regular appointments with the diabetic team, he is well and thriving and everyone has been extremely kind and supportive.

treedelivery · 27/04/2014 16:07

The NHS gives me a stable (if hard) job with paid holidays and reasonable sick pay if I need it. For that I am very lucky. It is not an entitlement. I'm very glad this country has such a huge stable source of paid employment.

It is made up entirely of humans. Humans err. They will continue to do so. It is highly unlikely anyone using a service based entirely on human performance will not encounter some inperfection or other. I try to remember that when I use it myself or for my loved ones.

IamInvisible · 27/04/2014 16:14

DS2(16 at the time) fractured his shoulder in 3 places and dislocated it last February. The physiotherapist who saw him afterwards kept telling me he didn't need to see the Consultant again, asked "how much use he'd like his arm to have" and each time I rang the secretary to make an appointment kept overriding it.

In the end I put in a complaint, got an appointment and we saw the surgeon. He had to have a big op, and as it was left so long his arm/shoulder will never be the same again.

The incompetence of some NHS doctors has, also, robbed me of my ability to walk unaided.

I do have an amazing surgeon looking after me now, but I shouldn't need him!

ICanSeeTheSun · 27/04/2014 16:19

It's a lovely post, perhaps write a letter to the ward as I am sure they will be thrilled.

Sparklingbrook · 27/04/2014 16:29

I am going to get something for the lovely, lovely Physio that has been seeing DS1. She was brilliant, her manner was just right-he is 14 and she needed to be quite firm but she did it so well.

Marylou2 · 27/04/2014 17:23

That's great Deadduck. I read your thread yesterday and I glad all went well.

oohdaddypig · 27/04/2014 17:30

It's great reading posts like these.

I have had a couple of good recent experiences too but awful ones in relation to a neighbour and elderly family member, who are both old and already chronically sick people who don't like making a fuss.

Which saddens me.

kaymondo · 27/04/2014 18:16

My dad had a heart attack on Friday - he was in surgery less than half an hour after arriving in a&e and everyone involved has been amazing - really made me appreciate how lucky we are to have the NHS.
