to really dislike the tons of makeup look?

I know, I know, each to their own and its a free world, yada yada.

I like makeup and I think it looks great on most people.

But I really dislike the troweled on (Christina Aguilera, Kate Silverton, even Kate Windsor) look that is so popular now.

Saw a woman in Sainsbury's earlier, checking out the cheese strings, and she had huge fecking false eyelashes on and I just nearly laughed.

Anyway, feel free to hit me with the why can't we women just be nice to each other stuff, I don't care tonight.

I bet that Nicki Minaj is wearing loads of make up to look that 'natural', her skin is flawless which probably means primers, foundation, concealer and powder, she's also wearing lip and eye make up, albeit in not as garish colours, but it's still there.

I love wearing lots of make up but use it to try to look flawless rather than obvious.

KeepOnKeepingOnAndOnAndOnAndOn · 23/04/2014 21:58

Lol bump grind true! I wear a fair bit to look naturually ok!

OddBoots · 23/04/2014 21:59

Oh this reminds me of that TV programme from a few years back, I've forgotten the name though, it involved people getting a make-under by an insulting robot called 'pod' or something.

LynetteScavo · 23/04/2014 22:04

I've seen some really naturally pretty young women wearing so much make up they look like men in drag. When ever I remark on it DH says "it's the fashion" like we're two oapsGrin

Mintyy · 23/04/2014 22:05

The thing is, though, if you are standing close enough to someone to have a conversation with them, you can tell if they are wearing tons of makeup, even if they hope they look natural. I have terrible eyesight, but I can see foundation on anyone. Makeup is great for tv, theatre and cameras. The rest of the time you either look made up or you aren't.

I wear a shedload of eyeliner some days, but I hate the massive fake lashes thing, combined with a face that looks like it's been done with furniture polish. And I have always had quite strong defined brows but the other night I saw a girl whose eyebrows literally made me gasp.
It's funny though, as, in a few years when all that is out of fashion, these girls will be as mortified as I am when I see pictures of me and my friends wearing patchwork trousers. Only they will have waaay more photos Grin

IfNotNowThenWhen · 23/04/2014 22:07

"It's the fashion"! Love that.

phalanges · 23/04/2014 22:08

I have no idea why, but 2 nights ago, ds and I watched Princess Diana's interview on Panorama.

(He is 15 and had never heard of her!)

I remember, at the time, being aghast at the ridiculous amount of makeup, in particular - eyeliner, she had on.

All these years later, it didn't look nearly as grotesque. I think we're now used to seeing a much heavier hand. Look at Kate Middleton and her ghastly eyeliner, which is seen as ott by many - but the norm for her and she's hardly your average slug browed commoner.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 23/04/2014 22:13

I know you're right with the 'it's their choice' bit, but I do agree. What bothers me is that, sure, perhaps if you wear very expensive foundation and only on photoshoots, you're fine. But it's really sad seeing teeangers caking on foundation that their skin reacts to, then slapping on more on top because they think they've proved they look 'ugly' without it. I find this really disturbing and economically, obviously it is great for cosmetics companies.

Laquitar · 23/04/2014 22:16

I like it. I like seeing people with lots of make up, attention seeking clothes, colour.
Better imo than seeing only washed out pale faces and grey clothes.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 23/04/2014 22:23

I think you can be colourful without wearing very heavy makeup.

Scarletohello · 23/04/2014 22:54

These are some pretty horrific eyebrows...

UtterFool · 23/04/2014 23:01

99% of the time I think women look more attractive with little or no makeup. My eldest is obsessed with pasting on the foundation but doesn't need it as she's beautiful as she is. Can't tell her though so have left her to it Sad

AlpacaPicnic · 23/04/2014 23:07

Woah scarletohello those are some odd pictures!

kippersmum · 23/04/2014 23:28

LRD, I couldn't say it better than you. I have never worn foundation/ concealer, I own a mascara which I use for weddings only. I am 38 years old. I regularly get asked how much older than me my younger sister is. She is 12 mo younger than me but a cosmetics slave, spends £100's a year on the latest gloop. The fanciest stuff I ever had was a set of dreadlocks ;).

It upsets my sis that after years of doing nothing apart from cold tap water my skin is way better than hers.

My answer is stop covering it in that chemical shite!!!!!! But the multinational beauty companies don't want me to say that.......

MamaPain · 23/04/2014 23:37

I certainly don't think either of the mates you've mentioned wear too much make up.

Also I can't see your point, so you can spot foundation on anyone? And? Its hardly offensive? You haven't said why you don't like this look, just that you don't like it, on that basis YABU.

I wear make up, I wouldn't say I wear loads and go for a relatively natural look for day, often quite dramatic if on a night out. Yes of course you can see it but whats the problem?

BumpNGrind · 23/04/2014 23:38

I know I look a lot younger without make up, but that doesn't make me want to wear less. I enjoy make up, I like it (scary eyebrows excepting) and it makes me feel good. The fact that my foundation may be visible to others doesn't particularly bother me either. In some situations a made up face can be more appropriate than a bare face.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/04/2014 23:42

scarlet some of those photos look like the Evil Doll face I did for DD at Hallowe'en Grin

MamaPain · 23/04/2014 23:46

And thanks to this thread I have just wasted too much tome looking at pictures of Kate Silverton, frankly, I think her hair is a bigger issue.

WorraLiberty · 23/04/2014 23:48

The thing with women who regularly wear tons of make up/false eyelashes etc...is that when you do finally see them without it, they can tend to look very strange...like really pale with tiny beady eyes. Whereas if they didn't pile it on so thick, they'd just look slightly different without it.

I was standing at a bus stop the other day, looking at a girl of about 19/18 with an unblended orange face, thinking 'Aww she's too pretty for all that slap'.

It was at that moment, I realised I've turned into my Mum Blush

BumpNGrind · 23/04/2014 23:53

Agreed Worra, bad make up is just bad, but wearing lots of make up is a different issue. Nobody needs to walk around with an orange tidemark or felt tip eyebrows.

WorraLiberty · 23/04/2014 23:55

True BumpNGrind but wearing lots of make up (even if it's very well done) still makes people do a double take, when you're suddenly not wearing any.

You know like when someone who wears really thick glasses takes them off? They can sometimes look quite strange and 'ghostly'.

CuttedUpPear · 24/04/2014 07:37

My DD age 22 does this.
It makes me really sad that she doesn't have the confidence to go a bit more natural.

She does her make up really well but there is no way that the amount of foundation she applies can look anything other than artificial. She doesn't need it as her skin is fantastic but she objects to the natural colour. Sad

I do ask her to tone it down when she's out with me, which she hates of course.

I just wish she could be who she is - I quite like the eye make up but I wish she would let her natural beauty shine through. Sad

Sparklingbrook · 24/04/2014 07:41

My guilty pleasure was the TV show Snog Marry Avoid. Natural beauties hidden under all the orange fakery.
