I'd take it as a compliment (regardless of intent). Babies are supposed to be fat until they start walking. How could anyone not love their gorgeous chunky thighs? Your mil is being silly.

Beanymonster · 21/04/2014 13:55

Was the word 'fat' used or something a bit cuter like chubby or chunky or sturdy? I use the last 3 to describe my dd.. Because she's all of them!

Just ignore and smile, at 4.5 mo she's only having milk, your mil is being stupid..

wishinwaitinhopin · 21/04/2014 13:56

My doctor said "ooh I love a fat baby!" Whilst looking at my son of about 5 months.

I'd rather he be fat than underweight (at this age). He's one now and looks perfect. Just shrug it off. Grin

MoreSkyThanWeNeed · 21/04/2014 14:00

As impossible as I know it is, ignore.
My SIL took the piss out of DS' hairline (?!) when he was tiny and I almost scalped her in a hormonal rage.
I absolutely love little sturdy baby legs and the Popeye-like arms on babies.

ParkingFred · 21/04/2014 14:02

I had the fattest baby I have ever seen.

He was ebf and by 6 months he was gargantuan. Complete strangers would regularly comment on his corpulence, but all I ever got from gps or health visitors was that he was perfect.

They soon lose it once they get mobile.

Purplehonesty · 21/04/2014 14:04

Did you mean to be so rude MIL?
Job done.
And chubby babies with chubby cheeks are adorable

KaFayOLay · 21/04/2014 14:07

I comment on chunky babies, when they have those lovely creases at their wrists and thighs.

Neither of my babies chubbed up, hence my delight at little chubbies.

I don't mean to and hope I haven't offended.

Fakebook · 21/04/2014 14:09

Meh. Babies are fat. Lots of people call my 5m old fat, because she is a little fatty with chubby cheeks and legs. Take it as a compliment and forget about it!

WireCat · 21/04/2014 14:10

Babies are supposed to be chunky.

CecilyP · 21/04/2014 14:12

Baby's are supposed to be fat - even skinny DS was fat at that age.

eightandthreequarters · 21/04/2014 14:12

I love fat babies! Adorable little cherubs.

Ignore your MIL - she's ignorant on this one. And if she's often insulting then you should limit your contact with her.

Chocoholism · 21/04/2014 14:12

Haha I glad she is a chubba but to ask me if I should feed her less? Is that not silly? She went back to the old feed every 4 hrs and only that.

I would just say"guidance has changed since your day, I know what I'm doing and the HV thinks she's perfect so please don't worry yourself"

Ultimately she is probably saying it with the best of intentions so try not to take it to heart too much.

Purplepoodle · 21/04/2014 15:42

Love love love fat, chubby babies. I just want to pick them up and snuggle them. Perhaps she is just worried about baby obesity. Just ignore, sounds like your doing things right.

onedev · 21/04/2014 15:53

I love fat babies & openly say this - hope no one has ever taken offence!

NobodyLivesHere · 21/04/2014 15:59

Dd1 was a fat little baby, ds was a skinny one, people were always commenting on it. The irony being she was a rubbish feeder and he was great!

callamia · 21/04/2014 16:01

Fat babies are the best. I have one, so I think I can say this.
It IS weird to ask whether you're feeding them too much though (unless you really are; like melted down lard in a bottle or something)

People always comment on the size of my six month old; they think he's older. I don't mind - he is surprisingly large, and his popeye forearms and super cheeks are the absolute best.

Forgettable · 21/04/2014 16:06

DS2 was a porker, bf, late to get going on solids

We had an influx of Townies to the village and one of the Yummy Mummies said summat like "how are you coping with your obese baby?" Complete with head tilt.

Raaaahrgh

My dd was a right chubster. Her cheeks were quite possibly the most kissable things in the whole world.

Ignore MIL OP. I have noticed, were babies are concerned, people just love to put their 10pence in... (Regardless of wether it is remotely logical) Smile and nod. I saw that on here, just smile and nod, and after trying a few times it really does work! Shuts them up and you obviously ignore it completely.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/04/2014 16:16

Why would you feed a rapidly growing baby less? I'll feed any child until its full.

My dm got comments about my weight as a baby (I was on toddler scales way before I was a toddler) but she said the mums feeding how much the HV told them to feed had scrawny looking babies who fussed a lot.

It was the 70's so it was four hourly feeds all the way.

Chocoholism · 21/04/2014 16:17

Callamia is a bottle of melted lard not appropriate then? Grin
I'm going to do that smile and nod thing from now on, I know she doesn't mean offence really but this is my pfb we talking about here!

Most babies are fat. Usually they slim down once they start getting mobile.

DS2 is 7 months old and I think he looks very fat - but when he was weighed and measured last week, the HV said that he was perfectly in proportion because his weight and height were both on the same centile.

But I'd be definitely be annoyed at the suggestion that a 4.5 month old baby should be on some sort of diet. That's just ridiculous.

MariaJenny · 21/04/2014 16:24

Very rude of her.
We got the too skinny comments from health visitors in the days when weight charge were based on bottle fed over fed babies rather than normal breast fed ones. You cannot win either way.
