To expect a roast on Easter Sunday (MIL moan)

CinnamonPlums · 20/04/2014 17:17

It's 5pm. We haven't eaten Easter lunch yet. I have three Dds to amuse and it's getting pretty frantic.

So far we've had a cheese sandwich.

MIL just announced she's getting a Stew our of the freezer for dinner.

WTAF has she been doing in the kitchen for the last 2 hours? I could have done the roast if she thought it was too much!

I know IABU. Should be grateful for her hosting but I just wish she had said it was all too much before and I could have hosted!

Thank God we've all got chocolate to hold body and soul together.

I know you're disappointed, OP, but I love your MIL for daring to be different Easter Grin. I suspect she's got a gin stash like yours - and it's in her kitchen - or maybe she's nicked yours Wink.

squoosh · 20/04/2014 17:39

Yes but I don't know you do I?

mrswishywashy1 · 20/04/2014 17:40

I had a pot noodle for my dinner.... Would have loved stew Sad

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/04/2014 17:40

Can you go home and order a pizza?

A stew is a perfectly fine meal I'm assuming something went wrong though :o

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 20/04/2014 17:40

I'd prefer the stew.

Yabu. You get what the host decides. In my house it was a bacon sarnie (i'm on my own and loving it Grin)

cozietoesie · 20/04/2014 17:40
Grin
YoureBeingASillyBilly · 20/04/2014 17:42

If i'd been at my mum's it would have been sirloin steak! No roast.

HappyMummyOfOne · 20/04/2014 17:42

Maybe shes been hiding in the kitchen as her DIL appears selfish and demanding.

CinnamonPlums · 20/04/2014 17:43

Well that's what MN is for!

I just needed to hear I was selfish frog.

I don't know anyone that doesn't have a slap up either.

It's more the we have driven 5 hours to be here and BIL and family and SIL and family are here too. We usually would have a massive feast we are all a bit surprised.

So people don't all have roast lamb/goose then?

of course you have to have a roast at Easter. Traditionally Lamb, but DH didn't have time for lamb, so we had gammon roast, before he went to work, with napkins and everything, including some lovely wine and pudding.

YANBU. I also think she fucked it up. maybe she has already been on her gin stash? Grin

Lilaclily · 20/04/2014 17:43

She was probably avoiding the family that's what I do when the inlaws visit
Fiddle in the kitchen for ages

Mrsrochesterscat · 20/04/2014 17:43

We've always celebrated Easter in the same way as Christmas (minus the presents), we have been looking forward to this meal for weeks! I had Christmas dinner with no meat one year, but I knew in advance so there was no disappointment. I can understand how disappointing it must be to be looking forward to a roast and be presented with stew OP.

squoosh · 20/04/2014 17:45

You've travelled 5 hours to be given stew from the freezer?

kelda · 20/04/2014 17:45

We tell my MIL not to cook too much. We had soup, followed by bread rolls and cheese board (so cheese sandwiches too!)

I will cook a roast for us tomorrow.

SocialNeedier · 20/04/2014 17:45

Bet you any money she forgot to defrost the bird/joint and has spent the past two hours desperately running it under the tap.

Just crack open another Easter egg.

CinnamonPlums · 20/04/2014 17:46

Maybe this is MIL telling us she can't cope with us all anymore.

I'm surprised you think I'm selfish and demanding happy. I guess I give more when I'm hosting a family gathering and I'm just selfish to expect others to do the same.

As for revolving around my Dds, MIL knows they won't eat food in sauce, so it just means it's a wasted effort for her to make something they won't eat.

Of course you don't have to have a roast at Easter. You can have what you like. However, I find it odd that after inviting the family and getting them to drive for several hours that nothing particularly special is on the menu. It's the getting it out of the freezer bit that would stick in my craw, not the fact that it's a stew.

We're having lasagne and salad, btw.

cozietoesie · 20/04/2014 17:46

Ah. If the whole family is there and you've travelled, it sounds as if something has gone wrong and your MIL is overwhelmed. How old is she? And is she well?

CMOTDibbler · 20/04/2014 17:46

No, have never had special meal for Easter. We have been to PIL today with BILs, SILs etc, but mostly as PIL go on holiday till July from Tues.
We had jacket potato and salad fwiw.

PavlovtheCat · 20/04/2014 17:47

But, I would be disappointed any time I expected a particular dinner and got something else. DH said he was cooking spaghetti bolognese for one evening, I went out with children and friend/her child to the beach, came home ravenous and he announced he had not done spaghetti Bolognese, we were having 'salad bits' instead. I mean, I like a salad as much as anyone else, but really, it's Not the Same as spaghetti bolognese and I was gutted. I didn't 'complain' as I was grateful dinner was being prepare for me, but that doesn't stop the sadness at not having platefuls of spaghetti, with garlic bread. Mmmm.

CinnamonPlums · 20/04/2014 17:47

squoosh yes.

[downs gin]

I wanted a roast today, but the weather is so awful that all the places we would have gone to were full to bursting.

I had a corned beef sandwich, DD had a hotdog.

I'm gutted (and I didn't bother to get any food in for tea, thinking we'd be having a big late lunch, so it will either be chippy or beans on toast)

I'm very Sad

squoosh · 20/04/2014 17:48

How old is she? Maybe she feels catering for large gatherings is a bit beyond her now.

jaynebxl · 20/04/2014 17:48

Always a roast here for Easter. Although we went out for lunch today... and all had roast!

CinnamonPlums · 20/04/2014 17:49

Apparently Stew is ready.

I bid you all farewell.

I'm polite enough to abandon MN during a meal at least!
