To think microwaves have no other purpose apart from making your crockery too hot to touch?

I have experimented with a wide variety of microwaves, stop and stir things but it's always the same results; mug of soup too hot to hold and lukewarm soup.

Really? How strange. Mine heats up the food and the crockery gets a bit warm.

ICanSeeTheSun · 19/04/2014 14:10

I have a soup cup the cup it self gets hot, but the handle stays cool.

You must be doing something wrong

winklewoman · 19/04/2014 14:10

You are using the wrong crockery.

BertieBotts · 19/04/2014 14:14

YY to wrong crockery. Some of mine gets hot and some doesn't. I had one memorable mug which was so hot that when I reached across it to get to the handle, I must have touched the rim of it with my forearm for a split second but I got an awful burn from it. (Can't tell where it was now, though). I never used that one again!

ilovepowerhoop · 19/04/2014 14:15

dont use malamine crockery in the microwave. Ordinary bowls/plates are fine and I always manage to get food hot.

LyndaCartersBigPants · 19/04/2014 14:17

Yes I think some types of crockery must have trace of metal in them or something. I remember one of my mum's plates fizzing and bubbling in the microwave. Aren't some glazes made from metal?

SpringBreaker · 19/04/2014 14:18

I bought loads of microwaveable containers at the pound shop. The mini saucepans are the best for soup, beans, veg etc

candycoatedwaterdrops · 19/04/2014 14:40

Spring Are they from Lakeland by any chance?

OP posts:
ilovepowerhoop · 19/04/2014 14:41

she said they were from the pound shop

winklewoman · 19/04/2014 15:08

Those Poundland saucepans are ace.

As far as crockery goes, you should put a little water in whatever vessel you want to test, microwave it, and when it boils switch off and remove (warily!)If the crockery itself is cool, it is safe to use, if hot, it is not suitable for microwaves. I understood it was all to do with the porosity of the material/glaze. Even though a mug, say, looks like any other, if it is porous liquid seeps in and gets hot.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 19/04/2014 15:12

Ah probably should have read. Wink I can afford pound shop stuff. I shall investigate!

YANBU-I burnt my finger pretty badly about a month ago on a cup from the microwave, it's only just completely healed Sad

LovelyJubblies · 19/04/2014 15:15

I love my microwave, definitely get some decent containers.
Ive got a vegie steamer and my new favourite thing is a rice steamer that cooks it to perfection.

mrsbucketxx · 19/04/2014 15:15

Tupperware is your savior here. no more scalded hands

Owllady · 19/04/2014 15:19

I have always heated things in Tupperware and transferred to crockery as I have always found the same :)

sashh · 19/04/2014 15:24

Sweet potatoes. Microwaves were made for sweet potatoes.

Shove a sp in for 4 mins, turn over and blast for another 4.

Cut in half and squeeze out the soft mash type sp onto your plate.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 19/04/2014 15:55

Also they produce perfect scrambled egg.

ForTheLoveOfSocks · 19/04/2014 16:02

I haven't had a microwave for nearly six years. And I really do not miss it

candycoatedwaterdrops · 19/04/2014 16:05

Disgrace I used to think microwaved scrambled eggs were the bees knees until I discovered eggs taste much better in a pan. With lots of a little butter.

squoosh · 19/04/2014 17:10

Haven't had a microwave in yonks, haven't missed it at all. And yes, scrambled eggs in the pan are far superior to microwaved ones.

Pipbin · 19/04/2014 18:36

I have not owned a microwave in
10 years. When I did have one I never used it.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 19/04/2014 19:09

I only really use it for heating soup and baked beans. It's probably easier to use a pan.

Really ? Confused
I've never had crockery get hot in the microwave - what on earth is yours made out of?
However, it is extremely useful for all sorts of cooking / heating / re-heating

dementedma · 19/04/2014 20:29

Another one here who ditched the microwave years ago and don't miss it one bit!
