To think microwaves have no other purpose apart from making your crockery too hot to touch?

I have experimented with a wide variety of microwaves, stop and stir things but it's always the same results; mug of soup too hot to hold and lukewarm soup.

we use the microwave for reheating sauces e.g. bolognese, curry, cheese, etc, for starting off baked potatoes and for reheating other leftovers e.g. fried rice, risotto, other foods, etc

Beans done in the microwave have nothing on proper ones done on the hob for slightly too long so they go all thick.

We tend to use the microwave for defrosting things and reheating leftovers. We don't use it every day, but we missed it when ours broke.

Reheating leftovers, or the Christmas pudding... We don't use the microwave loads, but it'd drive me nuts if it wasn't there when we want it.

The crockery though... I find earthenware-type stuff is a bloody nightmare. We have a few ikea bowls, which get thermo-nuclear hot, while the contents may be just tepid. A nice bit of Spode or Wedgwood and you're fine.

I make delicious porridge using the simmer setting in my microwave and there's only the bowl to wash, and no burnt pan. I can do all sorts of other things while it's cooking and not have to pay attention. I do also find it good for starting baked potatoes off and softening butter that I've forgotten to take out of the fridge in time.

Beans definitely taste better cooked in a pan, on the hob, though.

Until ours was used for sterilizing it was used to hide leftovers or defrosting meat from the cat's.

I find the microwave great for melting chocolate when baking.

HolidayCriminal · 19/04/2014 22:05

Wrong crockery, but also depends on oven.
Denby is fine in my m-oven at home but overheats with undercooked soup in the work microwave.

VisualiseAHorse · 19/04/2014 22:21

Haven't had a microwave in years, and don't miss it at all.

Nothing ever tastes better done in the microwave.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 19/04/2014 22:24

I only ever use mine when I've put a cup of tea down forgotten about it and when I remember can't be bothered to make another one
