To be sad at how boring little boys' shoes are?

We brought DD (3.10) and DS (2.2) shoe shopping today in the shop with the biggest range of kids' shoes within 60km of us.

DD looked at loads of shoes, pink or purple or yellow or white or blue or orange, with sparkles, sequins, embroidery, patterns, lights, all sorts of decorations. Or even naice black patent ones, though she didn't waste much time looking at those ones. She picked out a pink and yellow glittery pair which for some reason stood out for her against all the other pink and yellow glittery ones, put them on, and was immediately so madly in love with them that we couldn't take them off. She came home ecstatically happy with her shoes and is delighted with life.

For DS, we were shown all the boys' shoes available in his size. They were all brown or navy. The styles varied very little and there were no sequins, glitter or interest. One pair had a picture of a dinosaur on the side but that was as interesting as it got.

He had actively taken part in picking out shoes for DD (he knew exactly what she would like and picked up the pair she went for in the end, saying 'Roro like this one!') and was really interested in the whole thing, and was baffled when he was only offered boring navy and brown ones. He kept asking for the pink glittery ones he had chosen for himself, and (awful mammy that I am), I went along with the shop assistant who said he couldn't have them. He ended up with a boring navy pair which he refused to wear, and cried to have his old shoes back because the new ones weren't what he wanted (he wasn't tantrumming, just very, very sad).

AIBU to be sad at how little choice boys have? And also for despising myself a little for not going with my gut and just buying the poor little guy his beloved pink sparkly shoes?

Re: pink shoe polish. Go to Timpson and ask them. They won't have it in stock but you can match the shoe to the colour chart and they will order it in for you. I done this last month for DD's pink leather shoes that scuffed really badly.

It's strange though as its the only pair of shoes she had ever scuffed the toes - maybe the odd scratch or 2 after 4/5 months of wear. She's normally very easy on her shoes but these ones scraped really badly in less than 2 weeks. I don't think I will buy pink leather shoes ever again.

I'd say not that boys' shoes are boring, but girls' shoes are bloody impracticable. Like they say "you can't move when you wear us"

BookABooSue · 22/04/2014 13:03

Someone has probably already suggested this - but try sports shops. Our local one has a range of shoes, boots and trainers for boys in a range of colours and characters eg Fireman Sam, batman. Ds loves the shoes and boots we've bought for him and every time he wears them we get asked where they're from!

Thanks for all the shoe polish tips Grin!

BikeRunSki · 22/04/2014 13:42

Yeh, but Willaby, once you've filtered the pink frilly stuff out of the girls section, there is very little left. I have a 5 yo ds and 2 yo dd, I get as gender neutral stuff as possible.

Sainsburys go up to 12-13

BikeRunSki · 22/04/2014 23:02

Yey! I will have to look in bigger shops.

MrsJoeDolan · 23/04/2014 00:00

No Sainsbos in Ireland ElizabethJennings

melika · 24/04/2014 21:26

ha ha mrsJoeDolan i call it Sainsbos too!

MrsJoeDolan · 25/04/2014 11:10

I've just moved and there are no Sainsbos near us. Only 6 metro size co-ops. AIBU to be sad?!

5feralloinfruits · 25/04/2014 11:18

BikeRunSki · 25/04/2014 11:22

The toes on Kickers last about 2 mins though.

We went to a lovely independent children's shoe shop today. Although we were getting sandals for DD, I had a quick look at what they had for boys in case we decide to get him some soon.

They had some lovely really vibrant blue Ecco sandals for little boys, and some bright green ones. And some much bigger spider man sandals. Their shoes are good too.

And there was a good mix for the girls shoes too. The really nice red & rainbow sandals DD liked only started in the next size up, but they had all sorts. Of course she's ended up with bright pink patent looking ones- although they are a make which is fully waterproof, designed so you can wear them in the sea and stick them in the washing machine. And she could have had bright yellow instead of pink!

cakeymccakington · 25/04/2014 20:33

if you refused to buy the ones he really wanted then you can't really complain about lack of choice

there is plenty of choice, you just didn't want him to have some from a "girl" section

2 of my 3 boys have sparkly light up skechers! and ds2 is gutted that he's grown out of his pink sequin uggs (apparently we need to get them in purple next time)

hedgetrimmer · 26/04/2014 15:26

bike run mine all have kickers and none have ever got scuffed or anything, and they can be quit hard on their shoes.

BikeRunSki · 26/04/2014 19:29

It's dd who trashes Kickers! Ds was fine.
