To drink alcohol on antibiotics that say avoid alcohol?

MummaRumma · 17/04/2014 16:29

I got some metronidazole antibiotics and it says avoid alcohol.
Does that mean even 1 solitary glass of wine is not allowed? What will happen to me?
If I'm not allowed, how on earth do I get through a family filled Easter weekend!?!?
I did not think this damned bv infection through

Thanks vanita it was a light hearted comment about not making it through the weekend without alcohol plenty of other things that might help on a serious nite though thanks everyone I definitely won't risk it. I'm now thinking it's really bad that my GP or pharmacist didn't actually say don't drink alcohol but I read it on the box. If it's that bad I think they should of told me! They are quick enough to make sure I know that the pill can be ineffective on some antibiotics.
It's a tough one now, when asked why don't I want a glass of wine with my Sunday dinner, do I say I'm on a deadly antibiotic for my bv or some lame excuse where they definitely going to presume I'm pregnant!

I've just been trying to work out where I'd heard of that antibiotic before, then realised it was the stuff the vet gave my dog for his infected anal gland Grin, it gave him the terrible shits though! good luck op!

mumma I have given you a solution to both take 5 tonight enjoy Sunday dinner with wine sorted. Is actually a preferable treatment course as patients are more likely to finish the course

nocheeseinhouse · 17/04/2014 19:51

No, YANBU.

If you like vomiting. Good luck.

GeordieMama · 17/04/2014 19:55

Just say it's for your teeth if you don't want to go into your gynaecological health problems Grin

Also keep off the booze for a couple of days after you finish the course, the pukey effects can last a bit longer.

SilverShadows · 17/04/2014 19:57

I was prescribed that after a dog bite, if that helps with the excuses.

ilovenetmums · 17/04/2014 20:03

No definetly not.

It's the same as Antabuse it will make you really I'll.

BorsetshireBlue · 17/04/2014 20:04

CheeryName - It's what they put in Antabuse to help alcoholics

No it isn't - Antabuse contains Disulfram, Metronidazole is a completely different drug that has a disulfram-like reaction when mixed with alcohol.

Lweji · 17/04/2014 20:09

Cystitis is always a good neutral excuse. (and close enough if you don't want to talk vaginas)

partialderivative · 17/04/2014 20:30

On most antibiotics, drinking is fine

BorsetshireBlue · 17/04/2014 20:51

But not with Metronidazole partialderivative

MummaRumma · 17/04/2014 21:03

I will not be risking it thanx everyone! bugsy thanx for solution but I don't know the dosage of tabs and just going to follow prescribed orders and no wine for me which is ok really

If you need an excuse DH has just finished a course for a small abscess on an erupting wisdom tooth.

partialderivative · 17/04/2014 21:05

Superior knowledge Borsetshire!

Did the link not state that? Sorry if incomplete.

Though I heard (probably through QI) that booze was fine with Anti/B's

BorsetshireBlue · 17/04/2014 21:08

Yes Partial superior knowledge about the antibiotic the OP requested information about.

Figster · 17/04/2014 21:10

I drank on ABs once still don't remember most of the night but what I do remember involved being in 1 room 1 second and somewhere else the next, passing out on a table and then throwing food around our lounge. I was totally out of control and not in a good way!!

Don't do it!!

thenightsky · 17/04/2014 21:16

I once drank two glasses of cava whilst on antibiotics. I felt ok at the time but the next morning I felt like my head was imploding. I threw up in Ikea Blush

LoveBeingCantThinkOfAName · 17/04/2014 21:22

I thought 'avoid' was ok for 1 but 'do not' was to be listened too... Op not telling you too just adjing

Tapirbackrider · 17/04/2014 21:23

I vomited like a fountain with metronidazole - the alcohol came from a tiny amount of mouthwash swallowed by accident.

foxinorangesocks · 17/04/2014 21:37

Just to say op, I drank one large glass of wine 24 hours after a weeks course of metrowhatsiscalled. I became stupidly pissed, had to be carted home and spent the evening puking. And that was a day after I finished them! So on this particular ab it really is true but also, annoyingly, give it 48 hours to clear out of your system. They are a vile drug but do seem to be very effective, on the plus side Smile

Mrsmorton · 17/04/2014 21:57

I prescribed metronidazole to a VVVIP once and he went out drinking. He was very poorly and I thought I'd killed him.

He was fine Grin

Mrsmorton · 17/04/2014 21:57

After a day or two I mean.

CheeryName · 17/04/2014 22:31

Oh sorry BorsetshireBlue, I got muddled up, too much googling when I was prescribed metro-thingy and that stuck in my head as a 'fact' along with a study where x people drank and took the metro, of which y were hospitalised and z died. Scared me senseless!

JimBobplusasprog · 17/04/2014 22:43

I came on this thread specifically to say "not if it's metro". Some people are fine, others have tbe worst 48hours of their lives after mixing metro and alcohol.
