to want to give this family the money?

Dp and I are away. There is a mum staying in the guest house with her two boys. We haven't talked apart from exchanging hellos in the breakfast room. The mother is single and works three jobs to provide for her family but barely is able to cover the bills. I know this as she was talking to another mum and dad staying.

Now this afternoon the mum and her boys were sat in the lounge and the boys were asking if they can take a trip on the boat. It just goes out in the sea for half hour for 2 each. The mum said that they only had enough spends left for dinner and the train home so they couldn't. She got her purse out to see if she had any extra but she didn't. The boys accepted this but the look of disappointment on the little ones face was so sad.

So i would like to just give the mum the money to take her kids out. It's only 6 and we have holiday money left so won't miss it. Besides, we are leaving later so we don't need it. I just remember when i was little and my mum didn't have money to do things like that.

Oh that's lovely OP.

My mum still remembers being in a supermarket with me when I was 7. She was on benefits and had my brother then 5 and my sister then 3 with us. My brother asked for a cake but she had to say no she couldn't afford it. His face fell but he didn't say anything else. When we got to the checkout a lady came and gave my mum the cake he'd been asking for and said "I see you every week and the children are always so good when you say no to things I thought you'd like to be able to say yes this week"

That was 30 years ago. I still remember that cake. It was a great big chocolate things with icing and cream filling. We had it for tea 2 days running. Treats were rare for us back then.

A small sum of money can buy a lot of joy. You did a lovely thing.

I bet the Mum and Boys remember that kindness for a very long time.

Have you ever heard the expression "pay it forward"? Hopefully the Mum will do this in the future if she is able to.

So lovely reading about somebody doing something nice for a change

I'm ruddy crying here!

Made me think about growing up myself, DM was a single mum, always skint. When I was 7ish a week before Christmas someone anonymously posted £50 of sainsburys vouchers through our door with a note saying 'Christmas is about kindness- please have a lovely Christmas'
We had allsorts of lovely food that year :)

Trying to hide my tears from DS and DP Blush

Marylou62 · 17/04/2014 18:32

Well done OP and Mr OP!! Be very proud of yourself. Can I have some reflective feel good messages from fellow MNetters!!(feeling low at the moment) I was in supermarket yesterday and the young couple in front were having a bit of a lighthearted 'row'. They were having a film night as no money till pay day and it was a toss up between beans for breakfast next morning or a 50p bar of chocolate that the young girl oh so wanted. I went and bought a BIG bar and gave it to them. (I remember being a hard up student!) Thanks for listening......

MrsGeorgeMichael · 17/04/2014 18:32

......no i'm not crying
