to not want your dog to "kiss" my dc face

Sorry for grumpy old lady rant but we spent a few hours in our local country park and had a picnic - me and my 3 young dds.
While sitting and eating 6 dogs came over at the same time circling us after scraps of food (don't think they were too impressed by all dc eating blueberries). Anyway, there were 3 owners walking over slowly while I shielded dc. When the owners eventually made it over my two youngest (2yo twins) were scared and crying. They didn't apologise and just commented how friendly their dogs are and how they Love to lick and kiss people but would never bite. Now I find it naive that people would be so confident their dog won't bite but that aside... I do not want my children's faces licked by a tongue that moments ago had probably been licking its own bottom or eating poo. Dog owners seem to think I would find this cute. I love dogs but I do not find it cute!

Yanbu.

Morgause · 16/04/2014 15:21

it's gross and disgusting YANBU

wheresthelight · 16/04/2014 15:32

As a dog owner it's grim and I hate it!! My dog does it regardless of my feelings though and looks quite miffed when she gets pushed off the sofa!

Yanbu and the owners should have called them off and been more savvy over the fact you have young kids with you!

Ludways · 16/04/2014 15:34

I love dogs but hate being licked, YANBU

HugoTheHippo · 16/04/2014 15:40

Yeurgh!!! YANBU.

SquidgyMaltLoaf · 16/04/2014 15:55

Yanbu. Appalled dog owner here. I would never let my dog do that!

Cupid5tunt · 16/04/2014 15:57

It's disgusting I hate it.

I love dogs but I also love my friends and quite frankly wouldn't want either licking my face!

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 16/04/2014 16:10

Yuck! We have a no licking the Humans rule here as I know where the Dog's tongue has been and it's not pleasant.

m0therofdragons · 16/04/2014 16:14

Glad it's not just me - the owners today made it clear that thought I was bu. A friend of mine had a10yo old English sheep dog, lovely and calm, but one day it went for a6yo girl who had to be air lifted to hospital and 9 months recovery after being close to death so I know I'm overly cautious re dogs but the kissing comment really winds me up. Glad I'm not bu :)

Good God no! I hate it when dogs do that and their owners are totally oblivious or dismiss how you feel about it.

I'm already having palpitations just thinking about how we are going to the in-laws for Easter and how their dog is going to be all over dd who has just learnt to crawl.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/04/2014 16:27

I love getting licky kisses from my dogs - and from other dogs I meet, but I wouldn't dream of assuming anyone else is as unhygienically bonkers as I am - and if my dogs bother someone whilst we are out and about, I apologise and remove them ASAP.

GingerBlondecat · 16/04/2014 16:41

I've got a very licky Spoodle (spaniel/poodle) (along with a reteiver puppy) as the owner of a 'licky' dog, I do get used to it.
But................ I keep sanititiser and wet wipes on hand

he is Never allowed to lick anyone else. I dont expect others to love him like I do. It's just realaity.

Theodorous · 16/04/2014 16:42

At least you got the healthy eating boast in, double score for you

BethCalavicci · 16/04/2014 16:44

YANBU. That is absolutely disgusting, and the owners are idiots - no, it isn't 'kissing' to be slobbered all over by a dog. Hmm
I wouldn't dream of letting my 6 year old come haring up to lick your face Smile while you're having a picnic, so why are dog owners so ridiculous?!

OnlyLovers · 16/04/2014 16:45

YANBU. I love dogs but hate them licking me. As for them saying that dogs 'kiss' people, that's just silly and sentimental.

ThatBloodyWoman · 16/04/2014 16:49

Yanbu.
My dogs breath stinks and he rarely comes up for air in between attending to his knackers or his bum.

I'm sure they're all much the same.

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 16/04/2014 16:49

I think you only have to watch a dog giving itself a good wash once to know it's vile to allow them to lick people.

I do fancy a lipstick in that particular shade of pink though. I might try asking in Boots for a matt lippy in dog lolly pinkjGrin

mistlethrush · 16/04/2014 16:53

I try to avoid my dog's kisses (she's very liberal with them) - DS welcomes them. Whilst she wants to lick people in the park I do stop her - and I try to have her on a lead or hold her collar as we go past any picnics as she does find them very attractive and I don't want her introducing herself to people that are trying to eat their lunch. Some dog owners are unreasonable.

WooWooOwl · 16/04/2014 16:53

If the dogs were actually allowed to touch your dc, YANBU. I don't even let my own much loved dog lick me.

Were the dogs touching your children, or did they just circle as you said in your OP?

I wouldn't expect an apology just for the dogs being near you tbh. If they touched or licked then an apology is in order, but there shouldn't be any need to apologise for the dogs just being there when country parks are known as good places to walk dogs.

ThatBloodyWoman · 16/04/2014 16:58

If there are children scared and crying because the dog has got too close, I think most reasonable people would want to say sorry.I would if it were ThatBloodyDog.

ThatBloodyWoman · 16/04/2014 17:00

Can I just say though op -do you think that shielding your children as such may encourage them to see all dogs as a species as something to be scared of?

Longdistance · 16/04/2014 17:01

Yanbu.

You never know where the dogs tongue has been...like licking his own arse.

I'm a dog owner and don't mind being licked by my dogs but YANBU. Not only should the dogs not have tried to lick your DCs, but they should not have been allowed to pester you, especially when you were eating. The dogs should have been on the lead or recalled immediately unless you had asked the owners if you could pet them which you clearly did not.

m0therofdragons · 16/04/2014 18:19

I do agree that shielding them could make dc more scared but I'd rather they are scared than attacked. They did touch dc as one licked dd2s face before I could push it away.

Re healthy eating boast... they'd finished the chocolate rice crispy cakes and there was no sign of hummous. :)
