To think dh should not have shown ds (4) the scene in Star Wars where anakin is all burnt?

He was showing him Star Wars battles on YouTube. I went upstairs and when I came back he was showing him the bit where anakin is all burnt and is becoming Darth Vader. It's horrible! We have had words and dh thinks I'm being precious. I think a 4 year old does not need to see a horribly burnt man screaming in pain whilst robots turn him effectively into a monster.

AIBU?

I think your husband is a total prick if he thinks that is acceptable for a 4 yo! None of the star wars films at all are suitable for the under eights in my opinion.

Ploppy16 · 16/04/2014 09:09

How did your DS react? That's the key here. Has he had nightmares or is he of the 'eww that's disgusting show me more variety?'
I wouldn't show my 8year old that scene because she'd probably puke but it's all down to the child.
that's the best acting Hayden Christensen does in the whole film

londonrach · 16/04/2014 09:10

Anakin becomes darth vader? How he get burnt? He such a sweet giving child in Star Wars learning from yoda etc why did that happen? I don't remember seeing that happen.

Moonfacesmother · 16/04/2014 09:12

He turns evil!

Ds has apparently taken it in his stride but he is the sort of child who seems unaffected at the time and then will suddenly mention it or become worried by something afterwards.

Some of the battle bits with light sabers aren't so bad but that bit was particularly nasty.
Ds says he likes Star Wars despite not ever seeing it and having no idea who anyone is!

Isn't this revenge of the sith? IIRC that's a PG-13, as in parental guidence needed but the film board thought age 13 would be a good starting point. I don't always agree with the film board as I think they err on the side of caution but there's a big difference between 4 and 13.

Ploppy16 · 16/04/2014 09:18

Did your DH know that scene was coming? It could have come as a surprise to him as well and he's getting defensive because he's shocked himself?

...venge of the Sith is rated 12. Not suitable for a 4 year old at all, in my opinion.

littleredsquirrel · 16/04/2014 09:21

It's a 12. It's gruesome.

My two are nine and almost seven and Star Wars mad and we still haven't let them watch number 3 because of that scene and the killing of the younglings.

Moonfacesmother · 16/04/2014 09:22

He might not have known it was coming but he could have stopped it! It was halfway through when I came in.

YADBU. That is a horrible scene, and disturbed me,and I love Star Wars. It is definitely not suitable for a 4 year old.

littleredsquirrel · 16/04/2014 09:23

Londonrach Grin have you been on another planet for the past 35 years?

Tatooine maybe?

RabbitPies · 16/04/2014 09:23

YADNBU sorry.

PeanutButterAndMarmite · 16/04/2014 09:24

11 DS is a huge SW fan, he's seen the films many times, but not that part. Your DH sounds like an irresponsible arsebiscuit.

londonrach · 16/04/2014 09:28

Think I need to catch up red. Think I've been on the moon. How many are there?

Moonfacesmother · 16/04/2014 09:29

I do like the term arsebiscuit. I may reserve it for future use.

Dh is no longer allowed to show ds things on YouTube since he apparently is not a good judge of what is suitable and what isn't.

You do know London that darth is luke skywalker's father. Yes? Surely?

Ploppy16 · 16/04/2014 09:30

Oh Christ I forgot about the murder of the young ones! It's been ages since I saw the film.
It really isn't suitable for a 4 YO.

Scrounger · 16/04/2014 09:31

DS 7 yo has seen some of the Star Wars movies, I cannot remember if he has seen that one but in certain films we fast forward / skip some bits as they are too much. 4 is way too young to watch that scene. I think that the original ones, IV - VI are better ones to watch but we skipped some of those scenes when he was younger. YANBU

Ploppy16 · 16/04/2014 09:32

Episodes I,II and III ruined Star Wars...and now they're making more of them!

libertytrainers · 16/04/2014 09:34

he'll be fine, blimey i remember some things i watched as a kid!

lol at ploppy

the older star wars were a bit silly though weren't they and i watched them at the cinema

SweetSilverSongOfALark · 16/04/2014 09:34

London, there have been 6!

And more to come, made by Disney Hmm

CSIJanner · 16/04/2014 09:35

Yes but it's now Disney - so watch out for random spottings of princesses and Mickey Mouse.

Nothing says its a small world like the hordes of the dark side's armies, lead by Vader through the disney world main road.

badidea · 16/04/2014 09:36

YANBU at all - my mum was watching this with our 4 year old (she'd never seen it before) but DH knew all the horrible bits, so we'd go up, tell him this was something that he didnt' want to see and take him out, then put him back.

We made sure he never saw the annakin lava bit at all (it's gory) we just told him, that annakin got burnt and they fixed him and after that he became darth vader.

DS1 was happy to leave the room as he didn't want to see anything that upset him (my mum forgets how young he is at times and when he was in her room, she had him watchign indiana jones and the last crusade - he excused himself when they fell into all the skeletons as he said it was too scary for him and he came downstairs - 80 year old grannies - you really need to keep an eye on them!)

euphemia I'm afraid we totally spoiled star wars for our son by telling him that vader was lukes father before he'd even seen any of them (he was asking us lots of questions) it was only after it slipped out that we thought (well, we've ruined that series of films now... we do feel bad about it Sad.
