To think dh should not have shown ds (4) the scene in Star Wars where anakin is all burnt?

He was showing him Star Wars battles on YouTube. I went upstairs and when I came back he was showing him the bit where anakin is all burnt and is becoming Darth Vader. It's horrible! We have had words and dh thinks I'm being precious. I think a 4 year old does not need to see a horribly burnt man screaming in pain whilst robots turn him effectively into a monster.

AIBU?

Well, if he didn't like it he didn't like it. And some 4 year olds aren't ready for things like Star Wars I suppose. Many are though. At that age, the things you think might scare them often don't, and things that you might think are innocuous, might turn out to be the scariest thing ever (till the next one).

Ploppy16 · 16/04/2014 09:37

The new ones are concentrating on the Clone Wars aren't they? Or is that the children's programme?
Thinking back there is quite a lot in all of the films that aren't suitable for youngsters..

SweetSilverSongOfALark · 16/04/2014 09:37

It's a small small world, CSIJanner!

SweetSilverSongOfALark · 16/04/2014 09:38

The clone wars have been done as a cartoon series.

The new films will be set in the future and live action, I think (ignoring the cgi!!)

Moonfacesmother · 16/04/2014 09:38

It was mainly the bit where anakin is lying on the bed screaming and his face is all burnt off whilst the droids make his darth suit.

Grim.

Even I don't like that part.

badidea that's a case in point - The last crusade. The skeleton bit didn't scare any of my kids at all. The thing that did upset them was when Henry Jones thought Indy was dead (even though they knew he wasn't). And the bit where they thought Indy was going to fall into the chasm the way that whatshername had just done, driven by greed for the grail...

They laughed at the skeletons. Hmm

Episodes 1, 2, and 3 are all 12 rated! Shock

We have allowed our children to see 4, 5, and 6 (well, because they're the only real Star Wars films ... cough) but they have been told flat out they will not watch the others until they're old enough (the lava stuff is horrible, and impressionable young minds should not be corrupted by the horror that is Jar Jar B*nks! Wink)

My 5yo is obsessed with SW, worse than I am Shock but there is no way he's ready for those. We sat and paused/talked all the way through Empire Strikes Back too, because it's quite dark, but they have understood the why's and wherefores, so came through mostly unscared.

You could try Lego Star Wars if DH is keen for some SW boy-bonding- they're aimed at children, very funny and inventive (still has fucking JJB though!) and there's a game aswell (wii, PS3, DS etc)

HercShipwright · 16/04/2014 09:41

The clone wars cartoon series is actually far far grimmer than any of the live action films. Go figure. It's good though. Good but grim.

Moonfacesmother · 16/04/2014 09:42

True - at least he didn't show him Jar Jar Binks so I guess it could have been worse!

HanSolo · 16/04/2014 09:44

sorry, meant to say, the reason they watched 4, 5, 6 was because we showed them Star Wars A New Hope, and they loved it, wanted to know what happens, and we didn't want anyone in the playground ruining it for them with spoilers!

SweetSilverSongOfALark · 16/04/2014 09:44

Grin at jar jar Binks!

HercShipwright · 16/04/2014 09:44

Han the things that my kids found most upsetting about the first 3 films were the fate of Anakin's mother, and the fate of the younglings. That's the bit I'd be worried about a child seeing not the bit where Anakin gets vaderised (because you know that has to happen and by then he deserves it).

RabbitPies · 16/04/2014 09:47

Only 3 is a 12. Episodes 1 and 2 are PG.

RabbitPies · 16/04/2014 09:50

That's the DVD ratings I should add.

FairPhyllis · 16/04/2014 09:55

HWBU to show him any of the prequels.

I think it was a mistake to have 3 be a PG13 - imo for a series you should keep them all so they can all be watched by children of the same age.

shoppingbagsundereyes · 16/04/2014 09:55

You are right. Ds watched the earlier Star Wars films at 6. We didn't let home see the newer ones until he was 7 and we fast forwarded the bit where Anakin was burnt and the bit where Amadala dies in child birth. Ds understands that these bits aren't nice for him to watch but enjoys the rest of the films.
4 is far too young for any of it.

RabbitPies · 16/04/2014 09:59

Keeping them all PG wouldn't have worked so well IMHO. The story, and Anakin, get progressively darker, and bleaker, throughout the prequels.I think the film has to reflect it.

londonrach · 16/04/2014 10:05

6 when were they mAde recently as not been to the cinema for years. His father... Personally I never understood the story. Beginning to see why. Do you need to watch all 6 to understand it.

ZanyMobster · 16/04/2014 10:41

I think it depends on the child. Both mine saw them all from age 3, neither were traumatised by that part of the film and they had a good understanding of the story. Why shouldn't a 4 yo know that Anakin is Darth Vader? My DS found it less scary when he was 3.5 at a Star Wars convention/show as he said Darth Vader wasn't scary as he was only Anakin dressed up. He was pretty scared of Darth Maul in real life but not in the films.

I am pretty strict with films and will only let them see films I have seen already if they are not a U.

HopefulHamster · 16/04/2014 10:50

The old three are fine to watch for most young kids, if a bit scary for those children who don't like peril.

I remember being terrified but in a good way of Empire Strikes Back. It was thrilling. My son has seen A New Hope and bits of The Phantom Menace.

Of course the new ones are rubbish so the question is whether anyone (self included) should be watching them... Also I think it's madness to have one film appeal massively to kids (Ep 1 with kiddie Anakin), then have ep 3 be grotesquely violent. I know it's the story, but it's irritating.

littleredsquirrel · 16/04/2014 11:22

I wouldn't worry about star wars being ruined. They would have heard it in the playground anyway by age five. 4,5,6 are great. 1,2,3 more for the adults who saw 4,5,6 back in the day than for the kids. Mine saw 4 at age 5 (skipping over Lukes burnt family - not nice but fleeting) and then 5 and 6. I've let them watch 1 but its pretty boring.
