Just this really, en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_sensory_meridian_response I don't really know how to post links but I get it when people play with my hair or if people are very softly spoken. Nothing sexual just a lovely relaxed feeling that starts with a tingling sensation in the back of my head. I thought everyone got it until I spoke to dh and he thinks it is odd. I have found on youtube and through google that there seems to be a whole community of people who gets this. Do you get it or is it unusual? It is a lovely feeling but very difficult to explain

Ooh I get this too but I have never heard of that term before. I love having my hair played with and other things do it too. I had no idea it was a real 'thing'

EverythingIsAwesome · 15/04/2014 09:55

I get it from having my hair blow dried by someone else or from fingernails on my bare skin (like scratching, but gentle).

MunchMunch · 15/04/2014 10:05

I get this as well. My triggers seem to be getting my hair played with (I remember getting the feeling from about 5 or 6 years old when a girl used to sit behind me on the mat at school playing with my hair)having my neck, back and arms stroked and strangely reiki like movements even though no one is touching me but are in my aura if that makes sense.

NoImSpartacus · 15/04/2014 10:34

I get this, I've had it for years and have known about ASMR for years too, it was a revelation when I discovered there was a name for the feeling that only I felt! I love Gentle Whispering on You Tube, she is like valium.

I agree that as I'm getting older I'm rarely triggered. Eye tests used to do it for me but the last test was v disappointing! No tingles whatsoever. It's a certain aura that someone has that triggers me, they have to be v calm and peaceful and their actions should be slow and measured.

People who don't experience ASMR just don't get it and think we are weird. I feel sorry for them!

GallstoneCowboy · 15/04/2014 10:55

Funny how some people say they assumed everyone got it. I'm the opposite; I always assumed it was just me and in fact was almost embarrassed about it. I've only started talking about it since I found out it was a "thing"!

I've just remembered what was always my biggest trigger; the nit nurse. Having my hair fiddled with + someone paying close attention/concentrating = bliss!

edwardcullensotherwoman · 15/04/2014 11:16

My DH gets it if someone in the vicinity is enjoying something. Gallstone he thought the same as you - that he was the only one! Until he mentioned it to MIL and she said she gets it in the same circumstances. He looked up the youtube videos and they did nothing for him.
I very rarely get it - usually during a large group applause, and when the National Anthem is sung Hmm

kungfupannda · 15/04/2014 11:22

I get this - various things, but very strongly if someone is touching something that belongs to me. I used to get it at school when someone was fiddling with my pencil case.

I found out it had a name a couple of years ago, when I was looking up synaesthesia, which I also seem to have to some extent.

GallstoneCowboy · 15/04/2014 12:59

Kungfu - funny you say that about the pencil case. I trigger far more strongly if someone leafs through, say, one of my books/magazines than if they do their own!

I find it fascinating actually. When I win the lottery I will fund a research project into ASMR.

kungfupannda · 15/04/2014 13:00

Glad I'm not just extra-weird!

PoundingTheStreets · 15/04/2014 13:04

Certain types of music do it for me, especially if I'm running at the time. Hair stroking too, but in a less energetic way obviously. Grin

gymboywalton · 15/04/2014 13:10

ShockShock

i get this! i thought it was just me!

i get if i watch people draw-hence i sometimes say to ds-'come and sit next to me and draw a picture' Blush

asmrl · 15/04/2014 13:13

Gallstone cowboy research would be great! It doesn't really seem like any has been done. It would be so interesting to find out why it happens and why only some people get it.

Since speaking to dh I went to the hairdressers and found myself supressing it now I know not everyone gets it :-(

Ohhhhhh, I want it! I will google the haircut thing jellaby thanks.

GallstoneCowboy · 15/04/2014 13:17

It would be fascinating to see what brainwaves are like when someone's triggering.

DoJo · 15/04/2014 15:56

Is it still ASMR if you don't enjoy it? Eye tests are my first memory of sitting there feeling like my spine was about to burst through my back and hoping it would all be over soon. I sometimes get a pleasurable version, usually through choral singing or physical stimulation, but more often than not it's not enjoyable.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 15/04/2014 16:04

Yep, but just from stroking on the inside of my arm or the feel of certain fabrics. Not noticed any noise related triggers, though the feel of DS's fluffy newborn head if I rubbed my cheek or top lip on him did it too.

GoldenGytha · 15/04/2014 16:07

I've always had this, but like others just assumed it was only me, and I didn;t know it had a fancy name til I saw a thread on Mumsnet a year or so ago,

The videos usually work for me, I love the whispering and crinkly paper and plastic ones, someone has done one inspired by The Khaleesi, and it's just magical!

The library is another trigger for me, just the sound of the books being taken from, and put back on the shelf, and page turning sends me into raptures, I love anyone playing with my hair too.

I like Crinkle Heaven and VeniVidiVulpes, and a girl who used to be EllyBellyBoo does a cranial nerve exam video that I love.

LangenFlugelHappleHoff · 15/04/2014 16:09

Wow Shock

I assumed this was normal!

Yes to people gently touching me, using/looking at my belongings and also hot baths.

TheMagicToyshop · 15/04/2014 16:20

I started a thread about this a while ago. I get it from the videos, I like the tapping, folding and soft spoken ones. I've always got it from certain people's voices in real life if they're quite soft (can make it very hard to concentrate on the words they're saying).

Also get it from gently stroking my face/neck/arms. Remember those pens with a ball of fluffy fake fur on the top? I think she had one in Clueless and they were a must have 90s school accessory. I used to totally zone out in lessons from rubbing my pen all over my face. What a weirdo.

I also empathise with a PP who found the tingles painfully intense at the opticians - it goes right down my spine and it's so hard to keep still.

FindoGask · 15/04/2014 16:23

I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but some music makes my scalp tingle. I thought everyone got that.

GoldenGytha · 15/04/2014 16:31

DoJo

In my experience ASMR is a wonderful, relaxing thing, it's never unpleasant, its been described as a "brain orgasm" though there's nothing remotely sexual about it.

I always feel as if I'm floating when I get it, it's a trance like feeling.

GallstoneCowboy · 15/04/2014 16:32

This is a weird one but DSS eating pudding triggers me. Not his main meal; just his pudding. The "chink" of the spoon in the bowl sets me off. Doesn't work with anyone else.

BadgersRetreat · 15/04/2014 16:41

I had a female CDT teacher at school that did it to me - just something in her voice. I was rubbish at CDT but liked the class as i'd be in a trance by the time she'd finished explaining the task!

Very rarely get it now. I get a tingly throat as part of mine which is odd but nice.

iwouldgoouttonight · 15/04/2014 16:51

I get this too! The YouTube videos don't do anything for me. Mine is mainly from someone drawing a picture of me, someone using my belongings, eye tests, used to get it at the hairdressers but don't any more.

My most recent experience is the lady who cleans and empties the bins at work, she works very quietly and precisely. Now even just passing her in the corridor sets it off!

squoosh · 15/04/2014 16:52

ME! I love looking at ASMR videos on youtube. It's like getting the loveliest brain massage, makes me fell all floaty and blissed out. Definitely not sexual though. Didn't realise this was a recognised thing until a couple of years ago. Love watching people cleaning things, leafing through paperwork, rummaging in bags, folding things, writing on blackboards.......

Does anyone who gets ASMR think they may also have a touch of misophonia? Certain sounds and repetitive movements fill me with rage so I thought maybe the two meet somewhere in the brain.
