to think there is nothing wrong with net curtains?

I'm watching 'Selling Houses' and people looked and one house and said 'oh no, net curtains. Look the whole street has nets'.
Now I know that there are some nets that are a bit old fashioned but are they such a sin?

Talc - I just had to explain to my 10yo what i was laughing at :oBlush

He stared and stared and took about a minute to get it.

VivaLeBeaver · 13/04/2014 19:30

I might try and find a company to quote me for some. Must admit I'm not keen on voiles but have kept them for practicality. Never heard of shutter blinds before this thread and I like the look of them.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 13/04/2014 19:31

I love those, Viva. BIL who lives in the US has them. They look really elegant. Need to have the right house to suit them, though.

LtEveDallas · 13/04/2014 19:32

I love those viva, but they'd be a bitch to clean - you have to buy one of These

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 13/04/2014 19:32

We have plain voiles at the front as I can't stand people being able to see in. I know they are naff but I don't fucking care, and there is no way in hell that DP would not have something covering the windows.

We are not overlooked at the back so don't have nets and only close the curtains in winter for insulation purposes.

Don't like blinds as they are too officey and hard to clean for a slattern like me.

I'm always Shock when walking and catching a glance of people in their living rooms just sat there watching TV or whatever.

RunDougalRunQuiteFast · 13/04/2014 19:33

Nets or lace curtains can look lovely, I think!

hollyisalovelyname · 13/04/2014 19:34

Pull up blinds are great. Luxaflex do them.
Shutters are lovely too but don't suit every style of house

VivaLeBeaver · 13/04/2014 19:35

I've got an Edwardian semi. Front room has a big bay window so hopefully they'd look nice.

MrsMook · 13/04/2014 19:35

We got very light roller blinds made. They're great at letting in the light but stopping people seeing in. I'm surprised we couldn't find what we wanted ready made as it is a simple, streamlined look. Much better than the dust breeding office blinds that came with the house and blocked the light.

Jerboa · 13/04/2014 19:36

We have net curtains, but we're on the very busy main road, with people otherwise being able to see into the DC's playroom (lloads of people walking past too as we're near the shops) and I don't like blinds.

LongTailedTit · 13/04/2014 19:38

I'm about to order window film panels for our front bay - I'm not massively keen on nets on downstairs windows, and can't afford plantation shutters.
DS2 due any day and I reeeeally don't want want to be BFing on the sofa with an audience of randoms glancing in - we're on a hill where the road bends, so overlooked by four houses and a block of flats, plus anyone who walks down the hill.
One of my neighbours actually calls me and says "I can see you!" Hmm

MrsKoala · 13/04/2014 19:38

This is where I veer away from the rest of the human race. It would never occur to me to care if anyone looked in. I have had 2 houses straight on the street, no front space or owt - people would even sit on our window sil and have a chat, if the window was open you could hear them over the telly Grin

RuthlessBaggage · 13/04/2014 19:39

On DIY SOS (yes I know) they showed some bottom-up roller blinds, so you only block the bottom of the window (for privacy) and not the top (lots of lovely sunlight).

Everyone very defensive of their nets here Grin but only on practical grounds, not aesthetic. Anyone want to claim they look nice...? Hmm

squoosh · 13/04/2014 19:40

I have nothing on my windows either. I like lots of light more than I care about who's peering in.

VivaLeBeaver · 13/04/2014 19:40

If I lived in a town I maybe wouldn't care but in this village everyone knows your business enough without been able to see me sat on my arse watching TV. Plus dd would hate the lads in the village been able to see her, they give her enough grief already.

hollyisalovelyname · 13/04/2014 19:43

Luxaflex Duette Lite Rise are the roller blinds that pull up rather than pull down.
A great solution and I don't know why they are not usedmore often
I think the idea of the wooden blinds and taking some slats out from the top is a great idea too.
Privacy and light.

squoosh · 13/04/2014 19:44

Fair enough, it would be a bit weird to have the woman in the post office say 'I hear you like to wear a onesie and eat Kettle Crisps when you're watching telly'.

LtEveDallas · 13/04/2014 19:45

Ooh but MrsKoala if it wasn't for my nets then one of my colleagues would know that I sometimes wear a bright pink lacy bra under my uniform, and one of my bosses would know that sometimes I nip home for a quicky in the middle of the day on the premise of getting milk!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/04/2014 19:45

We have nothing but do get people glancing in (about 10ft of drive in front of the main windows). I would like privacy but we also have a fabulous view and it is a lovely light room and I'm not prepared to compromise on either. Also we keep stuff on the windowsill (plants, pictures in frames etc), so blinds or shutters would get in the way.

We have vertical blinds on the French windows in the kitchen, the wall units run right up to the edges of the doors at either side so there is no room for curtains of any description and the blinds make a huge difference to how much heat is kept in in winter. They also stop the neighbours cats staring in at night and freaking ours out. I take the slats down and wash them every now and then.

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 13/04/2014 19:47

Long tailed.. ooh which ones? Can you let us know how you get on? I'm in the verge of ordering myself.

BarbaraPalmer · 13/04/2014 19:50

I'm not keen, but they're considerable better than those office style vertical blinds

TBH I don't like anything at all at the window, not even at night. DH persuaded me to get wooden venetian blinds at the front of the house, but I never pull them down. our house is elevated from the street though, so one can only see from the picture rail up if looking in form the outside.

thebody · 13/04/2014 19:50

I think if I lived in a really busy tourism area with a house right in the street, ffs you know what I mean, I would have nets. I would feel paranoid about slobbing in my onsie watching crap on TV and being watched.

RunDougal very pretty.

LongTailedTit · 13/04/2014 19:51

These ones :)

MrsKoala · 13/04/2014 19:53

LtEve - If we have decide to get frisky in the living room/bedroom we do pull the curtains - we're not animals. Even if i had nets i doubt we'd not pull the curtains. I often joke to dh when we pull them for 10 mins some afternoon delight that the neighbours a probably saying look they're at it again. Baby nap time = sauce o'clock round our gaff.

ouryve · 13/04/2014 19:54

I did, ruthless - they make everything in the room look softer and add a glow to the window.
