just want to enjoy hearing the birds in my own garden on sunny days

I work full time, on the odd sunny weekend I just want to sit in the garden and read.

Unfortunately my neighbour always likes to bring their radio out and have it on for hours and this makes me retreat inside and close all the windows.

Already had an argument with one neighbour due to their security light that shined in my bedroom window every time a car went by so don't want to have another tiff. The music isn't really loud, but loud enough that I can hear the vocals and every single word of the adverts. They are nice people, so far,I just think its really selfish to play your music in the garden when other people are nearby.

If I want to listen to music outside, I put headphones on. Why should the OP wear earplugs when her neighbours could solve the problem which they are creating by wearing headphones?

Babymamaroon · 13/04/2014 16:59

YANBU. Why should you have to listen to their din. If they want to listen they can put earphones in...

ToAvoidConversation · 13/04/2014 17:00

YANBU having the radio playing occasionally on a sunny afternoon whilst BBQing or having a party is one thing. Having it on all the time is a pain and I would hate it.

Our neighbours dog barks all the time and that winds me up but the sound of their kids playing doesn't (apart from when they are winding the dog up). Wind chimes give me the rage too.

momwhereismy · 13/04/2014 17:00

Yanbu I just want to sit in my garden and house without hearing every little shit of a dog barking. Don't mind few barks but bloody hell after 15 minutes continuous you would think the owner would tell it to shut up. Strangely not everyone wants to listen to their beloved pet yapping its head off. Sorry went off on a tangent and took over your thread! I am so not suited to estate living!!
Oh but I wouldn't want to listen to the birds.

specialsubject · 13/04/2014 17:52

no music to be played unless no-one in earshot. That is what headphones are for.

end of, really. No-one else wants to listen to your music.

that also goes for kids who go round with their phones blasting out tinny crap. At least ghetto-blasters were heavy...

Amytheflag · 13/04/2014 18:13

Yanbu. There's these amazing things called headphones. I hate the "it's their garden too" defence as well. Why does that excuse selfish behaviour? If OP can't invade the neighbours life and expect them to turn it down or off, why are they allowed to invade OPs life and force it on her ears?

Lomaamina · 13/04/2014 18:24

YANBU! And I'd ban noisy gardening machinery at set times also, if it were up to me.

Pipbin · 13/04/2014 18:33

Oh dear, I've been taking my radio into the garden, however it is radio 4 rather than music. Also, my neighbours never use their gardens.
If any of them ever asked me to turn it down I would do instantly.

CaffeinatedKitten · 13/04/2014 19:14

Cordless earphones. Post an advert through their door.

gamerchick · 13/04/2014 19:18

Could you maybe get a birdsong track and stick it full belt on a stereo? They might think you're nuts and give you a wide berth.

RunDougalRunQuiteFast · 13/04/2014 19:20

Oh god, this reminds me of our awful NDN years ago who used to play traditional Irish music at full blast ALL THE TIME, until my brother put our speakers up on the windowsills and joined in with Led Zeppelin at full volume. Led Zep won.

Percephone · 13/04/2014 19:40

YANBU at all, some people are so selfish. Like the people near us who feel the need to have a bonfire every time it's a nice day, so everyone else has to hide indoors, close windows and bring their washing in Angry .

janey68 · 13/04/2014 19:57

Some people seem unable to exist without a background soundtrack going on. Totally selfish. The 'it's her garden too' argument is nonsense because this is about an invasion of the OP's garden. And entirely unecessary because anyone who can't survive without background noise can wear earphones

LongTimeLurking · 13/04/2014 19:59

YANBU if it is happening all the time. As others have said it isn't just music though.... equally as selfish and annoying are those that let their dogs out to bark all the time, have fireworks from Nov through to Jan 1st, and have bonfires and barbecues every summers evening.

It is highly selfish because their choice is imposed on all the immediate neighbours.

It came on at 6, i left for an hour and a half and its still on. Can hear it in every room of my small house, I'm slowly reaching boiling point on the inside.

It is so selfish and inconsiderate.

If it goes on for a 4th night in a row I will have to have a word, but worried I will wait until I get so angry.

YANBU

londonkiwi · 20/04/2014 11:30

YANBU! I think that music playing from neighbours is really invasive and irritating. I agree, if it's an occasional thing/party that's one thing but if it's all the time, I'd definitely have a word with them. At least you'll know you've tried and they may be totally unaware and happy to turn it down/off once they've heard your point of view. Good luck!

MissDuke · 20/04/2014 11:39

A neighbour plays music outside all summer - the music that orange bands play when marching. I sometime bring out some heavy metal music and play it loud to drown out his noise. He never takes the hint though :-(

Gatekeeper · 20/04/2014 11:46

YANBU, I love to listen to birdsong and at this time of year me and dh are outside, shuffling about with a cuppa at 6am or earlier

the constant drivvel of radio would drive me crackers esp with the same adverts being repeated every ad break

Gatekeeper · 20/04/2014 11:48

You need to come and move next door to us; we have a thrush nesting in our hawthorn tree and it sounds just heavenly in full song

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 20/04/2014 11:55

YANBU. Why do some people just have to have "background noise" to accompany everything they do? I really love a bit of peace and quiet and a constantly on t radio is really intrusive. Not least because 90% of what's on many radio stations is utter dross.
