To ask them to be quiet

fortheloveofmike · 12/04/2014 08:31

Ive just finished a night shift and next door are hammering and sawing in the bedroom. They may as well be in the same room its that loud!!
Am so tired and need an hour or two sleep so am thinking of going to ask politely if they could stop it for a couple hours.
I dont think im being unfair am I?!

Not unreasonable to ask at all

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 12/04/2014 08:34

I think you probably are. The downside of night shifts is difficulty sleeping during the day. 8:30am seems a reasonable time to start DIY. Is there anywhere else in your home you could sleep that might be quieter?

3DcAndMe · 12/04/2014 08:34

Ear plugs?

Sparklingbrook · 12/04/2014 08:34

Are they reasonable types?

fortheloveofmike · 12/04/2014 08:36

Nowhere else to go. Think these houses were made of cardboard so can hear everything. Right am popping round... they seem reasonable so will see!

Is it a one off or are they always doing DIY? Problem is if this is the only time they have to get it done it's not like they've chosen a socially unacceptable time to do it. They may have even paid someone to come and do it.

I sympathise, I used to have a flat above a shop and after a night shift used to be tearing my hair out. I got earplugs.

I think ywnbu to go and ask what time they might be finishing with the noisiest stuff and drop a lot if heavy hints, but don't expect them to stop, and maybe find a quieter corner of your house to set up a temporary bed in for some shut eye.

TheNumberfaker · 12/04/2014 08:39

If you're that tired you'll sleep through anything. 8.30 is a bit early but 9am is not. Get some earplugs. Perhaps your neighbours only have the weekend to get this work done?

frignorant · 12/04/2014 08:41

Yabu. Your need to sleep after a night shift isn't thier problem. I wouldn't dream of going around and asking them.

fortheloveofmike · 12/04/2014 08:47

Have been and asked nicely how much work they have to do and if possible could they give me half an hour to get to sleep.
They said no problem and its all gone quiet now so better get to sleep

Glad to hear you have lovely neighbours Smile

Sparrowlegs248 · 12/04/2014 08:50

This would be very annoying but i don't think they abu.

If they have diy planned they probably need/want to get on with it. I personally wouldn't be doing it at this ttime of day but people do sadly.

Sparrowlegs248 · 12/04/2014 08:50

X post - very nice of them too.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 12/04/2014 08:50

YaNBu, glad you could work it out amicably and they were understanding.

fluffyraggies · 12/04/2014 08:57

Glad they were happy to comply.

And i am the first one to rage about antisocial noise ... but ...

i think you need to get yourself some earplugs. Half 8 on a Saturday for starting one off DIY isn't antisocial. They'll be sat there twiddling their thumbs now wondering how late is late enough.

sunbathe · 12/04/2014 08:59

I think 8.30 on a Saturday is too early for DIY.

Glad you worked it out with the neighbours.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 12/04/2014 08:59

She asked for half an hour.

Sparrowlegs248 · 12/04/2014 09:12

I hope you get some sleep but have to say, if they start up again in half an hour surely you'll wake up?

3DcAndMe · 12/04/2014 09:16

It's good you sorted it

Have to say if I was your neighbour I may have told you to sod off ...

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 12/04/2014 09:20

Cant believe people would tell their neighbour to sod off if they nicely explained they had done a night shift. That seems really selfish and unreasonable to me.

3DcAndMe · 12/04/2014 09:22

If she needs to sleep in the day she needs to buy some earplugs

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 12/04/2014 09:23

Yes but also there can be a bit of negotiation between reasonable adults.

3catsnokids · 12/04/2014 09:27

My neighbours in the upstairs flat are currently running up and down the stairs shouting at each other. We put a polite sign up on the communal front door last week asking for people to be quiet in the hallway/stairs. They either can't read or don't care.

MammaTJ · 12/04/2014 09:52

I hope you are having a good sleep now. I work nights sometimes, but live in a detached housing association house, so a bit of music or the TV block out everything outside quite nicely.

CynicalandSmug · 12/04/2014 10:01

Earplugs are no saviour when the noise is diy. I suffered a couple of months of 7am to 10pm diy, and as a shift worker this nearly killed me. I had ear plugs and noise reduction headphones....nothing blocked the noise, and the sleep deprivation caused illness and nearly cost me my job.

Still, my neighbours got the place all pretty.

fortheloveofmike · 12/04/2014 11:47

Im up!
I find it hard to drop off to the sound of someone battering the shit out of wood if only theyd do it with a little more rhythm!
I slept fine once I'd gone off thank god..
Our street is really friendly and we all get on, these neighbours are new so am pleased we could be decent about it
