To wonder why everyone insists on using your mobile rather than a landline?

Do we not use landlines any more??

Despite giving both landline and mobile numbers to various people, why is the mobile always the first port of call??

This is why I prefer my landline:

-I can actually hear it ring as we have 3 handsets around the house. My mobile is usually tucked away in my bag.

-When I'm out and about, I'm busy and therefore can't talk at length or make appointments/check my diary etc. I need to be at home to do this.

-I am not a slave to my mobile phone. I think it's rude to start chatting on the phone when I'm talking to someone/in a shop.

So please just use my frigging landline, if I'm not in leave a message and I will ring back at my convenience.

And I would also go so far as to say manners have gone downhill since the introduction of mobiles. The constant interruption, you can't have more than a 5 minute conversation with some people before their phone starts ringing.

It has 300 inclusive mins to landlines and mobiles at any time of day. I only use LL for 0845 0870 numbers. My lLL is only free to other LLs after 7 pm

Llareggub · 08/04/2014 22:22

I have turned off the ringer on my landline. No one I know has the number. I only had it for broadband.

I only ring mobiles now. In my last job for a large corporate, none of us had fixed desk phones (or desks, come to think of it) only mobiles so it became a habit.

I don't think I even know my landline number!

namechangenumber5 · 08/04/2014 22:24

(ahem, this thread, while I agree, could have been written ten years ago!)

TheArticFunky · 08/04/2014 22:24

It's cheaper I get 2000 minutes on my mobile which is more than enough. I only have a landline because it comes with the Virgin TV/broadband/phone deal. Virgin calls are very expensive I am saving so much money since I got my mobile phone contract.

HolidayCriminal · 08/04/2014 22:25

I am with you OP. I only turn my mobile on sporadically. Thing is ppl don't text either.

vickibee · 08/04/2014 22:26

Can you have broadband without a LL

treaclesoda · 08/04/2014 22:27

I have no mobile reception where I live, I can barely send a text.

Every time I have dealings with banks/businesses/Drs receptionists etc I tell them not to bother ringing the mobile because it will go straight to voice mail due to no reception, but here, take my landline.

And every time, they ring the mobile and leave a message indicating that they're surprised I didn't answer, because they said they'd call. Every sodding time.

Dancergirl · 08/04/2014 22:29

Free mobile calls?

We get free calls from our landline to UK landlines but we have to pay for mobiles!

What Llareggub said. I have no idea what my landline number is, all the actual phones are unplugged, and we only have it for broadband, as we can't have one without the other.

Botanicbaby · 08/04/2014 22:32

yes you can have broadband without a LL.

OP its because our attention spans are now non-existent, people don't want to ring a LL then wait.....and wait for reply. ringing a mobile feels more like you'll get instant results even though it won't or may even take longer Grin

Bunbaker · 08/04/2014 22:32

I could have written your post, and agree with all your points

  1. We have a really good deal for our phone and broadband, so it is cheaper for some numbers.
  2. I don't want all and sundry knowing my mobile number and don't want it showing up when I ring someone.
  3. I get better reception on the landline
  4. All of our family and friends still use landlines. In the older relatives cases it is because they don't have/use a mobile and it is cheaper to ring the landline than a mobile.
  5. When we are all at home I switch my mobile off.
  6. OH runs his business from home and to just have a mobile number in his line of work doesn't give give the right impression (although he mostly uses Skype when talking to his overseas clients)
  7. I am old and pre-date mobile phones, so a landline will always be the default option for me.
TheBookofRuth · 08/04/2014 22:34

Ugh, I can't bear the landline. I'd have it taken out - no one ever calls on it but cold callers and my MIL and I could do without both - but DH reckons we need it for emergencies.

I actually find it really intrusive. I keep my mobile on silent and only answer if it's someone I feel like speaking to. Can't do that with a landline. Mind you, I realise my level of anti-socialness is neither common nor desirable!

MinecraftAteMyWorld · 08/04/2014 22:43

I always give my mobile as I can answer it whether at home, or out and about. I'm a "mobile worker" so my diary is electronic and I'd rather people just had one number. I have an inclusive tariff and calls don't cost me any extra. My mobile's my work and personal number and I don't find it a problem. I just don't answer work calls in family time unless I need to. I decide. Likewise, I turn off my phone if work is important. I also manage to spend plenty of time in places with no, or poor, reception. Text is my friend.
I don't want work people calling me on the home line. That would be really bad. Only the PA has it!
And my friends all text anyway, which is much easier when planning stuff.
I get a clearer line on my mobile than I do on the land-line extension I put in my office. And I can use a headset with my mobile. What's not to like :)?

Bunbaker · 08/04/2014 22:43

You can turn the volume off on your landline. We are TPS registered and don't get many cold calls.

Because we do use our landline regularly it is usually a friend or family ringing during the evening, and as our family is scattered we prefer to telephone rather than Facebook because it is more personal and friendly. In fact very few family members have a Facebook account - just the teenagers.

theeternalstudent · 08/04/2014 22:44

I don't have a land line. Don't have a need for one. They seem rather dated to me!

Dancergirl · 08/04/2014 22:45

Yes you can screen calls on a landline bookofruth it's called caller display!

FracturedViewOfLife · 08/04/2014 22:46

I have landline but haven't had a phone plugged in it for over 5 years.

Bunbaker · 08/04/2014 22:47

"Don't have a need for one. They seem rather dated to me!"

You probably don't have the reasons that we do to justify having one.

I don't walk around the house carrying my phone so wouldn't hear it ringing if I left it upstairs.

WillieWaggledagger · 08/04/2014 22:47

If you don't want people to call your mobile why do you give out the number? Why not just give out the landline if that's how you prefer to be contacted?

FanFuckingTastic · 08/04/2014 22:47

We're supposed to call people on mobile phones? I thought they were just for the games, time telling and picture taking.

WillieWaggledagger · 08/04/2014 22:48

Having a landline can help with applications for financial/insurance stuff

EndoplasmicReticulum · 08/04/2014 22:50

People have to ring my landline if they want me as I have no mobile reception at home. Or they email.

Willie because most places insist on taking a mobile number these days. When you fill things out online for example a mobile number is often one of those fields you have to complete. I've tried putting in landline or fake numbers before (eg all zeros) but websites won't accept them.

mousmous · 08/04/2014 22:53

what's a landline?
to dry laundry on?
