To wonder why everyone insists on using your mobile rather than a landline?

Do we not use landlines any more??

Despite giving both landline and mobile numbers to various people, why is the mobile always the first port of call??

This is why I prefer my landline:

-I can actually hear it ring as we have 3 handsets around the house. My mobile is usually tucked away in my bag.

-When I'm out and about, I'm busy and therefore can't talk at length or make appointments/check my diary etc. I need to be at home to do this.

-I am not a slave to my mobile phone. I think it's rude to start chatting on the phone when I'm talking to someone/in a shop.

So please just use my frigging landline, if I'm not in leave a message and I will ring back at my convenience.

And I would also go so far as to say manners have gone downhill since the introduction of mobiles. The constant interruption, you can't have more than a 5 minute conversation with some people before their phone starts ringing.

I spend about 15 hours out of the house on days I work. No one would ever reach me if they didn't call my mobile

Bunbaker · 08/04/2014 22:54

"If you don't want people to call your mobile why do you give out the number? Why not just give out the landline if that's how you prefer to be contacted?"

The only people who have my mobile number are OH, DD, the school and a handful of friends who text me. The vast majority of people who want to contact me by phone ring the landline. As Leonie has pointed out if I am able to answer the phone at home they have my undivided attention.

Dancergirl · 08/04/2014 22:55

Exactly leonie!

"When you fill things out online for example a mobile number is often one of those fields you have to complete."

That has never been my experience yet. I never fill in my mobile number.

Nocomet · 08/04/2014 22:56

Our mobile signal downstairs is crap and my hearing is crap, I have a very loud repeater on the landline.

Also I don't like giving my mobile number out to all and sundry as I think they are horrible intrusive, for family only objects.

Dancergirl · 08/04/2014 22:56

I do try and avoid giving out my mobile no, but some places really push for another number. I also have poor mobile reception at home so I always say try the home no FIRST.

I can't answer my phone at work either. I don't understand this "must be contactable at all times" thing. Probably because I'm old.

Dancergirl · 08/04/2014 22:58

willie I don't know what your job is but do you mean you speak to people on your mobile when you're working?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 08/04/2014 22:58

If I have one of those forms that requires a mobile number I give my husband's.

WillieWaggledagger · 08/04/2014 22:58

Fair enough treaclesoda - my interpretation of the OP was that it was people rather than online forms etc that the numbers were given out to

scottishmummy · 08/04/2014 22:59

So dont be so ditzy have your mobile easy to answer instead faffing about in bag
Or simply don't give mobile, seeing its so dreadfully inconvenient
But you know this telecom thing,it's not new,or fanklec.just you've not caught up

Ludways · 08/04/2014 23:00

You can't have broadband without a landline, that's what connects your computer to the internet. If you ask your provider for a breakdown it'll show as something like line rental.

I answer my land line "hello mam", she's the only one that uses it. I only use my mobile as work pays for it so it's free and I don't have to walk across the room, lol

WillieWaggledagger · 08/04/2014 23:00

Not for a social chat dancer, no, but I can take calls from e.g. plumber, mortgage advisor provided I'm not in a meeting.

EBearhug · 08/04/2014 23:01

My mobile phone number has been the same for about 12 years. I've moved house about 5 times during that time.

I'm not a slave to it - I can quite easily put it on silence and ignore it (well, not this week, as I'm on-call, but normally I can.)

But it does depend where I am - at my parents' house, they didn't get much of a signal, nor does my sister, nor my cousins. (I have family that tends to live in old stone houses in remote areas of the country.) Still, that's what voicemail was invented for.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 08/04/2014 23:02

Maybe they're not psychic so they don't know if you're at home or not, but they do want to speak to you?

Just a thought!

Ludways · 08/04/2014 23:03

Well you can have broadband without a land line, you'd get it through your mobile company, mobile broadband as opposed to fixed broadband, usually costs more.

SpineInABap · 08/04/2014 23:04

Got rid of my landline years ago. Was so happy that virgin media didn't need it for t'Internet.

But I am of the generation where my mobile doesn't leave my side or pocket.

Since EE started giving me free 0845 and 0870 calls, it really has been the final nail in the coffin for my landline.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 08/04/2014 23:04

I think if you don't want to be rung up on your mobile, it's a bit silly to have one, really!

Ilovexmastime · 08/04/2014 23:05

I call people's mobiles because they're more likely to answer them than the landline. Simple as that.

Wantsunshine · 08/04/2014 23:06

Where I work and my previous job there are no desk phones. All calls are made on mobiles throughout the companies. The only people with desk phones are the receptionists. I do have a landline at home and not a digital one just really big standard. If there is a mobile issue or a power outage I can then still make calls.

But that's exactly it original! As the caller, I would always ring someone's landline. If they're in, all well and good. If they're out, I leave a message. If someone's out, they're busy surely and it's hard to chat.

My mobile is for MY convenience, not other people's!! I have it in case my car breaks down, get separated when shopping. I prefer silence when walking the dog, sitting on the beach, etc. etc.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 08/04/2014 23:09

Well I think unless you made it explicit that your mobile TELEPHONE number is not for people to ring you with, you're being unreasonable to mind if they do.

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 08/04/2014 23:10

Fucking hate my landline. Were it not for sky I'd delete it!

Today I called docs. Wanted to cancel my app. An automated system wanted my birthdate and home tel no to locate my details. Had to redial as I have zero idea what home no is and as no one uses it I'm not learning it just for slim chance I need to again cancel an app! GRRR
