Young Cheerleading

I guess this is going to be a controversial topic, but I can't help feel cheerleading for under 10s is weirdly inappropriate. (Although watching 13 year olds do it isn't much better)

Genuinely not after a bun fight, I'm curious if I am in the minority or not! AIBU?

Competitive cheerleading the cheer leaders are the athletes so no exploitation takes place

and still doesn't have proper protection.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 10/04/2014 23:31

Well, it is a great workout, promotes teamwork. Much better for their health than being sat at home...

What exactly is your issue with it ? The routines? The costumes?
Do you have a child of your own or of close family involved? Or are you just making a general comment?

My DDs are in Dance and Gymnastics. I would have no problem (other than scheduling) if they asked to do cheer leading.

JohnCusacksWife · 10/04/2014 23:57

I have no issue with the exercise, the routines or the gender politics. Just the apparent need for children to be spray tanned and heavily made up. Beyond inappropriate.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 11/04/2014 00:02

Throw in a wig, and you could be talking about Irish dancing at competitive level. Makeup has just been banned for under 10s by the main competitive body...

chocolatebuttin22 · 11/04/2014 00:15

a lot of sports don't wear protection, it's why coaches are trained and athletes taught within their abilities. injuries occur in every sport.
Many sports dont have protection even if it is physical and can be dangerous, rugby, trampling, acro, gymnastics, tennis, netball, martial arts etc etc.
People sign up to these sports knowing the risks .

chocolatebuttin22 · 11/04/2014 00:17

a cheer coach can not make a young girl fake tan, entirely up to the parents.

Hulababy · 11/04/2014 12:55

No spray tans at my niece's squad, not even for competitions or older ones.

A little stage make up, but that's the same for anything under harsh lighting - dance, drama, etc.

Cheer in the UK is very different to Cheer in the UK from what I've gleaned.

I Cheer - it bloody hurts, we have a mixed team and it's great fun. The rules for competing are very strict about no "sexual" positions/poses/dances being included Grin

Cheer in the USA has a long long long way to go at professional level IMHO.

EmilyAgain · 22/11/2015 17:56

I'm American. I'll preface this with the disclaimer that different things have different connotations in different settings, so what I am about to say may not apply to cheer leading in the UK.

I would never, ever let my daughter go into cheer leading. In the US, this is not a "sport" advocated by well-educated parents who value the development of real self esteem, sense of self worth, and true athleticism in their daughters. For the little girls, it is one step above Honey Boo Boo pageants where I am from. I think the British English word for this is "naff"...

I think it might be different in the Southern states, though.

All this 'its roots are sexist' is a ridiculous argument imo.

Should we ban everything that used to be sexist. Like the medical profession because women just used to be nurses that supported the 'real medical staff' ?

Dd did cheerleading. They had boys and never cheered a sports team on, the whole time she was there.

The cheer leading group at her secondary school cheer at all sports events and compete. Wether it's track and field or the football teams (both boys and girls).

I am in the UK and have never seen cheerleading being run in a sexist manner. If some places do then that's wrong. But it doesn't mean a whole sport should be banned because some people are idiots or because it uses to be sexist.

Ah for fucks sake!!

Who the duck is resurrecting all these ducking zombie threads.

This is why I never click links in threads.
