To dress my baby in babygros?

Namechangesrus · 08/04/2014 14:06

My DD is 4 months old and I still dress her almost exclusively in babygros, day and night. She has some other little outfits like t shirts and leggings, dresses and tights etc, which she wears occasionally.

I just prefer her to wear comfy clothes, plus she looks so cute in them!

I was having coffee with some other mums with baby's who are 4 and 6 months and they were talking about how they hate to see babies over 4 months or so in babygros during the day. They said 'they're not baby babies any more' and it looks weird and like they're wearing pyjamas.

I'm not offended or anything, just want to know if I'm the weird one!

My 19 month old is wearing a babygro right now.

I just change to footless ones when they are past about a year.

And call them 'rompers'

LearnerM0ther · 08/04/2014 14:40

No, you are not weird..

For refluxy reasons, mine was in babygros till about 9 months (nothing tight round the middle) but even without the reflux, they're just learning to move..? Comfort over aesthetics any day of the week.

You're a better woman than me, I WAS offended (by being asked if I couldn't be bothered to get him dressed)!

Blithereens · 08/04/2014 14:44

I don't have babies yet but I love the way they look in babgygros. Adorable, cuddly, precious.

Namechangesrus · 08/04/2014 14:45

I'm so glad you all agree!

To be fair my baby was at home with DP so I didn't feel like it was a dig at me.

Each to their own but my DD looks a lot more comfy in her babygro than the 4 month old DS looked in his jeans and polo shirt!

We went out and about with babygrows.
I wonder if I was being judged in cafes etc..
Don't really care if I was!

VisualiseAHorse · 08/04/2014 14:54

I actually prefer soft leggings and a long sleeve top/cardigan for babies, but I really don't care what anyone else dresses their baby in. My boy was very refluxy, so needed his top changing alot. Also, he wears cloth nappies, and it's hard to find babygros that fit nicely over cloth.

(apart from shoes, I hate seeing tiny babies with shoes on)

Chacha23 · 08/04/2014 14:57

I'm planning to keep dd is babygrows until she starts walking (at least!) :)

it's really easy for me, and really comfy for her. Don't see what the problem is, tbh.

YouAreMyRain · 08/04/2014 15:01

My six month old is in babygrows everyday! I have been thinking this myself (mainly in shops that label them "sleep suits" and sell coordinated outfits for one month olds!) but they are so comfy for him (plus he's got a fat tummy and a umbilical hernia so trousers wouldn't be great round his middle).

I think it's weirder seeing three month olds in tights, vest, top, dress and cardigan. What a faff! And their layers are always bunching up too.

mouses · 08/04/2014 15:07

when I had ds1 I bought loads of cute jeans and shirts, hats/caps, shoes...
he seemed so uncomfortable in them, so tried baby jogger bottoms but still seemed to restrict when sitting for winding etc..

when I had ds2 I kept him in babygrows until he could sit unaided. he was also a sicky baby so easier and cheaper when it came to cleaning or having to be thrown.

did same for dd. i do think they look so darn cute with all the frilly tops/dresses and headbands - but i know it would drive me mad having material flapping in my face all day and something stuck on my head Grin

each to their own i guess

stargirl1701 · 08/04/2014 15:08

DD wore a babygrow until 6 months and then a footless babygrow until 1 year. She had silent reflux and it was important not to have anything sitting on her tummy bar the nappy.

I must say I dislike babies in 'outfits'. A babygrow and cosy cardigan combo is just lovely.

NoodleOodle · 08/04/2014 15:12

As long as they're relatively clean and are dressed for the weather, that's all that matters IMO.

elfycat · 08/04/2014 15:33

I put my DDs in babygrows everyday until nearly a year. On cooler days I would use the babygrow under 'clothing' as it's a T-Shirt, legging and socks all-in-one. Trousers and cardigans over as necessary for warmth, or a nice dress if we were going out.

DD1 used to do poonami and as soon as you heard the fart the clothing would be done for no matter how fast you moved. All I had was a stack of babygrows in the change bag for her. No point in using 'nice' clothing for her as it would just be boiled away at 90 degrees with extra bleaching bleach.

What about all the teenagers in 'babygros'!! Seriously though, I think you are being sensible. My work colleague (in her 50s) said children used to wear these baby gown type things. Made nappy changes easier. I've found some on john lewis and my baby will be wearing those at home. Go with comfort and ease not fashion! Sounds like your friends are a bit judgemental

Whatsyourpoint · 08/04/2014 15:41

Both mine were in babygros most of the time until they were about a year old. Much more comfy for them.

FourForksAche · 08/04/2014 15:45

Babies are not dolls to be dressed up, a babygrow is fine until they start trying to stand up. The feet can be a bit slippy.

Purplepoodle · 08/04/2014 15:48

Iv gone for posh baby grows now mines a bit bigger for baby groups ect

Purplepoodle Wish they did them in adult sizes!

wheresthelight · 08/04/2014 15:58

My personal preference is to dress my 7mo in "proper" clothes and I have done since the day she was born. However, that is my choice and sod all to do with anyone else. As is your choice to only use babygrows.

Do what works for you and sod everyone else!

DiePeppaDie · 08/04/2014 15:59

My DS is 10 months and still has a couple of babygros. I'll put one on him if we're having a lazy day and I don't have to go out apart from to the shops or something. I have slobby clothes for lazy days, I don't see why he shouldn't!

My DM hates them, she says they are for sleeping in.

sweetiepie1979 · 08/04/2014 16:02

I have s 5 month old not out of baby gros yet. It's comfy warm a d easier. I was wondering if I was being lazy
Not getting her dressed but then dh reminded me that I change her gros twice a day most of the time anyway.

ScaredToBeHonest · 08/04/2014 16:12

DS is 7.5 months and wears babygrows or the footless ones 90% of the time. If we're going out with family or friends at the weekend then I put him in soft cotton or denim dungarees. I don't like him in tops and trousers because the tops just ride up.

Babygrows are cheap, easy to wash and don't need ironing. And besides, he looks incredibly cute in them. I put him in dark or bright coloured ones during the day so they don't look like PJs. At night he wears white or pastel coloured ones

SaucyJack · 08/04/2014 16:12

Dress your baby in what you like.

I don't get this twee MN obsession with them tho. DD3 (1 month) wears leggings and tops in the day. They're more comfy as they don't scrunch up round her feet, easier to do nappy changes AND she doesn't look like she's in her pyjamas.

MarrowsMom · 08/04/2014 16:15

My DS is 4 months and he wears babygros if we're not going anywhere in particular. They're comfy and practical so why not? If we're out and about he usually wears dungarees as they're also comfy and make nappy changes easier!

candycoatedwaterdrops · 08/04/2014 16:17

Given that none of us are babies, we don't really know what's more comfy.
