AIBU to not understand why people shop in Waitrose?

So I heard all the fuss about Waitrose and thought I'd give it a go.
I don't know why people go there. It is noisy and crowded with no doorman an no one to carry your bags. You can't get pink Marc de champagne truffles or Himalayan salt aged rack of beef, or any of the little delicacies you can pick up easily at Fortnum and Mason.

AIBU to ask how far your man has to drive your maid to get there and how much she spends from the Coutts grocery account?

I dont get the coffee thing, doesn't it spill while you're pushing a trolley about or does everybody pack out a cafe bit?

YellowTulips · 07/04/2014 23:34

In a word yes Smile

I love Waitrose - but then I love cooking. You can get such unusual ingredients.

I tend to get "basics" from other stores but do a monthly shop to Waitrose for all the speciality stuff.

YellowTulips · 07/04/2014 23:37

In the interests of transparency should confess the "basics" are delivered from F&M daily for freshness.

BethanyBoobs · 07/04/2014 23:38

Because it's (along with Asda) the nearest shop to me. So I do my shopping both there and in Asda.

I don't have an Aldi or Lidl near me.

comingintomyown · 07/04/2014 23:38

Hate cooking but they have a chilled cabinet of wine for when I renege on my vow not to drink tonight, every night

I love edamame beans from Waitrose and their packs of two slices of Victoria Sponge. I buy the beans sometimes and the sponge packs EVERY time I go in.

I buy Béarnaise sauce from Ocado because I can't make it myself.

I shop in Tesco for their pumpkin and sunflower bread, which is delicious and Sainsbury for their steaks and buttery mash which I can make for myself but I'm too lazy.

I only buy green beans from Aldi and their own brand sausages are glorious.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm a shopping-tart. Shock

The Mail article will be out shortly.

LadyMacmuffintop · 08/04/2014 09:36

Unfortunately One is off there right now. One probably won't be able to park one's Bentley either..

CalamitouslyWrong · 08/04/2014 09:50

If there was one within a reasonable distance I'd shop at wholefoods. Well probably not, but I'd pop in to browse the ludicrously expensive stuff. Not worth driving 100 or so miles to do so.

Waitrose has nothing on wholefoods.

Catsize · 08/04/2014 09:52

Love 'One's Waitrose'. Nice swan fudge. Grin

CaptainSinker · 08/04/2014 19:20

Non-u haven't heard that in literally yaahs.

Birdinthebush · 08/04/2014 21:01

I go in waitrose just for the free coffee and to be looked at funny by the yummy mummies

NearTheWindymill · 08/04/2014 21:23

Sod it. I keep forgetting the coffe whilst Sainsburys are doing "Active Kids". Thing is when I go for the free coffee I end up spending £40 on nothing and scraps.

It is better than Fortnums though - you can't fricking park outside Fortnums Grin and standing on the tube back to zone 2 with the bags is beyond tiresome.

Melonade · 08/04/2014 22:14

Bit more selection of chocolate than Tesco and Sainsbury, all of whose range I've eaten multiple times each. Plus nicer brownies and cakes. Fortnums actually a little bit disappointing on the chocolate front as I don't really want to eat Peruvian Mountain Goat flavoured chilli bean chocolate, but individual chocolates like you can buy with fillings in a French boulangerie, hence Waitrose is ok for a quick supermarket shop but Harrods Chocolate Floor is better still.

Was I too specific on the chocolate?

lessonsintightropes · 08/04/2014 22:15

Melonade, dahling, you really can do better flying in the authentic stuff made up a mountain in Peru. Stoneground, yummy.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 08/04/2014 22:20

I use Waitrose if I have forgotten to pick up a pint of milk at Harrods

Can someone enlighten me as to what Tesco and Sainsbury are?

wowfudge · 08/04/2014 22:30

I believe they are where the little people out in the suburbs shop.

Ladymac when at F&M, purely for gift and treat buying you understand (the housekeeper looks after the proper shopping - it's in her job description) I leave my driver to worry about parking.

CiderBomb · 08/04/2014 23:32

I love their Quail eggs. I serve them up boiled for breakfast everyday with toast soldiers for dunking.

Cindy34 · 09/04/2014 00:33

Dairy Milk is sometimes cheaper there than at Poundland.

Last week: 2x200g at Waitrose was £3. At Poundland it was 120g for a pound. So for £3 at poundland 360g. At Waitrose for £3 you get 400g.

Not enough of an incentive to shop there for most people I am sure but if you buy brands, then at times Waitrose can be competitive.

Cindy34 · 09/04/2014 00:36

Fortnum & Mason is too far for the staff to drive to just for my Dairy Milk fix.

ilikeyourface · 09/04/2014 00:39

God the sheer thought makes me sick. Would it hurt them to maybe put in a champagne bar and valet parking

lessonsintightropes · 09/04/2014 01:00

Ilike I know. There's no salmon taster menu either Sad I will have to try it in Alaska or Canada if I want the truly authentic taste.

Not sure about valet parking though. Won't the little oiks put a dent in the Bentley?
