Question about gender change

lougle · 06/04/2014 20:48

If someone is making a transition to one gender from another, what does their sexuality relate to - their original gender, or their new one?

For instance, if a man is transitioning to become a woman, and is attracted to women, would that make them 'straight' or 'gay'?

If a woman is transitioning to become a man, and is attracted to women, would he then be 'straight' or 'gay'?

I'm likely to have to explain 'gender change' to my children, but it occurred to me that I really don't understand the 'gender' part of it at all.

I understand the physical processes and the medical timeline, etc. (ie. live as new gender for x period, medication, initial reassignment surgery, final reassignment surgery), but I don't understand how someone who has had gender reassignment would identify their sexuality.

I hope I haven't offended anyone - I may not have used the right terminology and may have been clumsy in the way I've asked the question.

If we united rather than fragmenting we would be a stronger movement. I firmly believe that. "Solidarity is the suspension of mutual loathing."

Unfortunately I don't see it happening any time soon.

FloraFox · 13/04/2014 11:58

posy do you really think feminists don't know this? Don't you think we might perhaps be frustrated that time we could spend fighting to dismantle patriarchy (which would benefit trans people) is being diverted to accommodate and validate the experiences of a very small number of people who are asking feminists to overlook patriarchy and apply different rules to men who wish they were women?

chibi · 13/04/2014 12:01

i apologised to you, without reservation .

nothing to say about the misogyny and death threats here though, eh kim? what a surprise Hmm

never mind, back to the kim show

tibbysmum · 13/04/2014 12:02

"men who wish they were women" really????
and it's trans women who are the biggest obstacle to you smashing the patriarchy?
deluded.

FloraFox · 13/04/2014 12:13

tibby and kim please tell beanella what you think about her views that trans people should go through surgery before being accepted as the opposite sex.

tibbysmum · 13/04/2014 12:16

tibby if you want to stop posting on this thread, feel free to do so.

kim I'm not sure who you are talking to... I don't think you did apologise to me and if you did I certainly missed it.

I think the same point stands though. If you disagree with bean's point, please explain why.

FloraFox · 13/04/2014 12:28

we post things that we may regret because we are angry.

We see this often as "if you say X you can't be surprised that we say Y". Except that saying X is nor violent nor threatening whereas saying Y is certainly violent and threatening.

limitedperiodonly · 13/04/2014 12:36

when we are angry and upset, we post things that we may regret because we are angry.

She made me do it, officer.

FloraFox · 13/04/2014 12:45

Yes, please do tell us what it is that you regret posting.

I would not consider myself a radical feminist but I concur with their views on trans people.

However I would stop short of burning them or wanting their primary or secondary sexual characteristics to fall out or rot.

Live and let live.

I was called a radfem on another long-ago thread by a poster who's not here. I've forgotten the gist of the thread but it was going down the lines of man-hating because I stated vaguely feminist views outside the FWR topic and she was one of those people who thought such views should be corralled instead of being allowed on Chat.

If I do hate men it is buried deep in my subconscious and the many men in my life have never detected it either. Maybe they are similarly deluded.

People use RadFem as an insult because women talking about their experiences unsettle their world view. I don't think it is an insult so it doesn't hurt me. It bemuses me.

Same with being called a Socialist. And a TERF, as it happens. I'd never heard the term before but after reading it on this thread I looked it up and have realised that I'm one of them.

I don't see it as an insult. It's my opinion and I am entitled to it.

QueenStromba · 13/04/2014 13:59

Every time this subject comes up I end up agreeing more and more with the radfems. The first time someone had mentioned that radfems disliked transgenders but couldn't remember why so I came on and explained their point of view - I even prefaced it with "this is not my personal viewpoint, this is what radfems think". Kim jumped straight on me for it. Again on this thread Kim has made it all about Kim. Even when we were talking about men who claim to be trans so they can come into women's safe space Kim has made it all about Kim and Kim's penis.

levianne · 13/04/2014 14:05

Am I being called a radfem? Am I being lumped in with them because I haven't agreed with everything that is said? This isn't rhetorical - I'd genuinely like to know.

QueenStromba · 13/04/2014 14:15

Well anyone who tries to question transgender politics is a radfem and a transphobe.
