being so good for the environment, and not damaging the road and pavement surfaces so less cost, and meaning there are more spaces for me to park in, and having a less demand on the NHS and causing less traffic queues, and being really good role models.
AIBU to fear them and be inconsiderate to them?

No-one should be inconsiderate on the roads, car drivers or bike riders.

I've seen bike riders just as bad and car drivers.

PansBigChainring · 06/04/2014 01:28

it just annoys me that cyclists seem to have the trump card in every argument re environment, parking spaces, costs to road surfaces, health costs, personal management, finances, stress management, fitness at work. I wish I could argue against biking as a mode of transport. The only thing I can think of is the lack of a tax take on petrol, which most adult bikers avoid by cycling, but then less petrol use means we fight climate change! Such a conundrum!

PansBigChainring · 06/04/2014 01:29

They also kill much much fewer other road users. Which kinda pisses me off even more. They could try harder..

Riding a bike might help you relieve some of your stress on this issue.

PansBigChainring · 06/04/2014 01:32

Well, I'm not stressed about this at all. Just making some obs as a driver, tbh.

OP posts:
PansBigChainring · 06/04/2014 01:49

just looking for some reasonable anti-cycling positioning I guess. They just seem to have all of the arguments sewn up. Which is annoying.

OP posts:
PansBigChainring · 06/04/2014 02:05

I dunno. It just seems that adult commuting cyclists should be seen as heroes in all sorts of ways, rather than mums/dads/sons/daughters who we are rude to. It's a tricky thing, I know. We have our driver needs as well.

Irrationality helps.

letsgomaths · 06/04/2014 08:02

I've cycled a fair bit, but save your anger for the following:

Cyclists who don't obey the rules; who run red lights, who think they don't have to stop at zebra crossings, who ride on the pavement, who ride in triple file, and (warning: DM story most likely) the one who shouted to a pedestrian ON THE PAVEMENT "move out of the way, I'm not stopping!". He hit and killed that pedestrian; got a fine which was a fraction of the cost of his bike; he should have got a long prison sentence.

LoveMyBoots · 06/04/2014 08:10

If you can't beat, them join them!

TiggyKBE · 06/04/2014 08:13

Jesus would have ridden a bike.

wheresthelight · 06/04/2014 08:13

Dp is a cyclists but even he gets the rage with some of the idiots round here who think that the law doesn't apply to them, cutting people up, running red lights etc. There are a lot who are very good and obey the rules of the road but as with everything else the idiotic few tar the whole group.

Yanbu to fear them unfortunately. They may not kill as many other road users but they certainly cause a lot of accidents!!

Myfirstcalendar · 06/04/2014 08:19

Given the ops username I have my suspicions that this may be a reverse Aibu......

NearTheWindymill · 06/04/2014 08:24

I agree with letsgomaths. You take your life into your hands around here whether you are in a car or on foot.

Personally I think there needs to be cyclist registration scheme and that it should be unlawful for any cyclist to ride without a fluorescent jacket bearing their own unique number linked to an insurance policy.

kerala · 06/04/2014 08:28

Be interested in the stats how many deaths serious injuries caused by bikes versus caused by cars....

Dh commutes by bike luckily there is a cycle path off road so he doesn't have to put with abuse from fat bottomed Jeremy clarksin clones

whereisshe · 06/04/2014 08:28

As pp said, it's the twattish rule-breaking cyclists that deserve the ire (as do twattish drivers) Normal, rule-abiding cyclists as you say have the moral high ground.

But the moral high ground is often irritating in a holier-than-though sense so any cyclists taking advantage of being on said high ground can be disliked for being annoying in my opinion.

PunkrockerGirl · 06/04/2014 08:30

YANBU.

Mothergothel99 · 06/04/2014 08:31

God your a twat of the highest order.

We cycle to school, oh the fucking joy of being almost run down every day by the 4x4 driving parents at our school.

Even had one shout at me for being on the road.

As a pedestrian I like cyclists who stop and wait patiently at pedestrian crossing whilst my young child and I are crossing - after all if the green man is on it is our right of way. I also like cyclists who do not ride like bats out of hell on pavements, silently cycling up behind me so I can not see them, whizzing past me so close that I can feel contact on my upper arm and shoulder whist I am pregnant - yes I managed to stay on my feet only just.

As a motorist I like cyclist who do not get so close to my car whilst overtake standing traffic that they knock my wing mirror off and then tell me to fuck off and cycle off when I dare to complain. I also like cyclists who do not decide to ride around the right hand side of me when I am about to make a right hand turn into a side road - luckily I had my wing mirror replaced otherwise I may not have seen that idiot.

Stick to the highway code and have some decency and I like you!!

Here's a negative of cycling - all the cycling paraphernalia that ends up around the house. Helmets, hi-vis waterproof waterproof everything. And oh the Lycra! Shock

Drivers just have car keys.

skaen · 06/04/2014 08:42

Nice reverse Aibu!

I prefer drivers who stay on their nice wide road and don't drive into off road cycle lanes while we are having a family cycle ride. The rides which end with DH and DD(5) being blue lighted to hospital are not quite so much fun.

Unfortunately DH's injuries were sufficiently serious that he's unlikely to cycle again.

maddening · 06/04/2014 08:45

without drivers you'd have no parking issues, school parking, blocked in driveways, p&c spaces threads on here and we'd all have to live in the same place due to smaller commute-able distances

TiggyKBE · 06/04/2014 08:49

There was a Mumsnetter called Pan who used to post a lot about cycling before his terrible leopard accident.
