Because it's met with a chorus of people who make a point of heavily stating their preference for raspberries over strawberries in a manner that suggests they are the only ones who can tell the different?

Or has sleep deprivation finally finished off any tolerance whatsoever?

I feel the same about peaches

Now I love a nice strawberry, especially in Pimms.

We have Blackberries in our garden which taste divine. And we have so many that we pick at the neighbours side as well and freeze them. Still eating last year's.

I will be happy if our apple tree doesn't produce any this year, as I was told. I am still traumatised by last years harvest.

I'm feeling a bit unhinged now having shared my fruit preferences Grin

TheRealAmandaClarke · 05/04/2014 20:29

Well its obviously just me.
But I have to admit to feeling slightly irked about the way some ppl state their preference.
Ams " would you like some strawberries?
DM anonymous person "I'm not keen on strawberries, I like raspberries though. (with the distinct subtext/ undertone that most ppl probably think they're quite similar but the raspberry preferrer DM has sophisticated tastes and can discern between the two)

Oh shit, I've really lost my grip on reality, I know.

But I can remember a similar thing with a friend (when I was about 12 Grin) stating her preference for Wispa over aero (Wispa was quite new then) Blush

Would you stop it with the talk of -snotberries-- gooseberries
We know nobody really likes them. Is it an endurance thing?

CombineBananaFister · 05/04/2014 20:35

YANBU the real amanda - I can completely imagine that scenerio in certain circles but as I live in the Yorkshire equivilent of the Deliverance film, it's not something I've witnessed Grin

TheRealAmandaClarke · 05/04/2014 20:41

Grin combine

oh god, gooseberries

Hands up who likes them? Why are they not extinct?

TheRealAmandaClarke · 05/04/2014 20:51

Gooseberries are authentically English. Old fashioned in an elegant way, yet quite unpleasant.
Like those tiny scented floral pillow things that "freshen" your knicker drawer.

Raspberries are better in my opinion ( unless I'm eating a strawberry , when obviously strawberries are better )

The only good peach is a tinned peach .

JuniperTisane · 05/04/2014 20:55

I don't really like either, TBH. I prefer a mango. Or a grape, possibly. Or a plum?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 05/04/2014 20:58

At the start I wasn't sure. But your post at 20:29 resonated with me - my mum does the exact same thing. With her it's because raspberries are grown in Scotland (she's Scottish, but moved to England before I was born) and it's the implication that Scottish is better than English every single time that annoys me. So YANBU.

deakymom · 05/04/2014 21:00

i prefer fresh strawberries and raspberry flavoured things! i always find the strawberry flavoured stuff is just too blasted sweet!

MagratGarlik · 05/04/2014 21:03

We have strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackcurrants, blackberries, cherry tomatoes and apples in our garden. Love all of them (especially when used to make home-made ice-cream).

ICanSeeTheSun · 05/04/2014 21:03

Winberries are my favourite.

Wolfiefan · 05/04/2014 21:09

I love cherries. Yum Yum!

TheRealAmandaClarke · 05/04/2014 21:14

I do prefer the flavour of raspberries (slightly) Grin but i think strawberries are delicious too.
I think when ppl do this "thing" (and I'm still convinced it is a thing) its like they're saying " I know you probably think that strawberries and raspberries are pretty much the same but I'm very sensitive to these things and I can tell you they are as different as peaches and faggots."

OP posts:
NoodleOodle · 05/04/2014 21:15

Ooh, strawberries, yum yum.

badidea · 05/04/2014 21:15

I love strawbs and raspberries, especially with meringue and thick double cream. mmmmm....

Our local PYO does both (I'm in Fife) so don't really get the 'raspberries are scottish thing but strawbs aren't' surely you can grow both up and down the UK?

As for wispa vs aero - it's wispa, every time... (unless its pepermint aero)

TalkinPeace · 05/04/2014 21:23

Homegrown red currants, white currants, blueberries, raspberries, loganberries, strawberries, tayberries, blackberries
apples, pears, sweet cherries, plums, morello cherries, grapes
I LOVE fruit season in the garden

HethsC · 05/04/2014 21:27

I've been craving cherries for weeks now. I so wish they are in season. :(

SoulJacker · 05/04/2014 22:32

This is one of the most bizarre things I've ever read.

superstarheartbreaker · 05/04/2014 22:34

I like rhubarb baked with honey and served with cream.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 05/04/2014 23:18

It's 50 years since DM lived in Scotland, maybe strawberries weren't so widely grown as raspberries in the past. She makes a lot of little comments comparing England unfavourably to Scotland and it gets a bit wearing.

Morloth · 05/04/2014 23:20

British berries are the best I have ever had.

The rest of the fruit is a bit sucky except the Bramley Apples.

But the berries!

capsium · 05/04/2014 23:23

I am waiting for the year my Mulberry Tree bears fruit......

ThatBloodyWoman · 05/04/2014 23:26

I love scrumping mulberries.

Big, fat, dark, juicy deliciousness.
