AIBU to buy a tumble drier.

I have been without a tumble dryer for 17 years. I have 4 kids and work full time.

Bear in mind that I am well tight, but I have a dream that a tumble dryer will make my life better.

Should I loosen my purse strings, or continue living like a Victorian?

YABU to have lived for 17 years without a tumble drier! Go buy one right now!

Floralnomad · 04/04/2014 22:54

To me the tumble dryer is an absolute must have .

Beamur · 04/04/2014 22:55

Much better than drying clothes indoors - mould and all that, YANBU

DoJo · 04/04/2014 23:16

DO IT! Ours broke recently and I nearly had a nervous breakdown. Plus, you could benefit from having less damp in the air which is definitely a plus for me as I have asthma (and an aversion to crispy towels!).

redexpat · 04/04/2014 23:38

I dont understand why people choose to live without them. It takes 20 minutes to peg washing out, more if you have a toddler, and even then you have to hang it up inside to finish, and iron. Or put it in the dryer for an hour. No brainer.

AlpacaLypse · 04/04/2014 23:43

Yanbu. And get a posh German one. I'm in love with Miele and AEG (but accept Bosch).

AlpacaLypse · 04/04/2014 23:44

To clarify - I use the washing line when it's possible. But most of this winter it hasn't been possible. And there really isn't room to dry stuff indoors.

thenightsky · 04/04/2014 23:45

White Knight only make tumble driers. Mine is the best thing ever.

scarffiend · 04/04/2014 23:48

I lived in a flat where all we could do was air dry - the difference in the softness of our clothes when we bought a dryer was amazing. YANBU - buy it!

wowfudge · 04/04/2014 23:57

Go for it OP - you won't regret it. Apart from all the other pros, a tumble dryer is such a time saver too. Bung the load in and switch it on, rather than pegging it all out on the line or artfully draping things on airers in the hope they'll dry evenly or more quickly. Plus less damp in the air round the house, less of a dust mite breeding environment.

ViviPru · 05/04/2014 00:09

God I wang almost everything in ours. Got it in January after 17 years of adult life without one. Ours has a sportswear mode that's quite forgiving to jersey and other things you might not think would be ok to tumble. Bloody love it.

BackforGood · 05/04/2014 00:13

The only thing YABU about is not having had one before ! Shock
I would HATE to be without my tumble dryer.
No clothes all around the house. Things like sheets and bedding turned round in a few hours. No ironing. Soft towels. Able to know stuff will be dry before you get home from work, not having to risk it not raining on all your washing.

Morloth · 05/04/2014 00:14

I have a Bosch now.

It has a light in the drum. At first I scoffed at such extravagance. But actually, it means you can see all the way in there and don't lose any socks or undies.

smokeandglitter · 05/04/2014 00:14

I am very sensitive to smell (stuck up whatist) but tumble dryers make my life livable. I hate the smell of clothes dried indoors, they all smell of damp. Exacerbated by the fact we have ragdoll cats and so can't leave windows open but also just yuck unless it's sunny which in England doesn't happen so much.

YAB VVV R to get a tumble dryer.

smokeandglitter · 05/04/2014 00:17

I would also enjoy looking into getting one, ours came with a rented place and id love to swap with other people - ours takes hours, but it's a washing machine/tumble dryer combo. Whatever you do make sure the lint collector is easily removable and cleaned and the water is easily emptied, then you're good to go!

RiverTam · 05/04/2014 00:21

with that sized family I would get one, and I say that as someone who's not a fan. But madness to have that amount of wet washing hanging about!

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 05/04/2014 00:29

YANBU. Though do not buy a hotpoint. Mine has just failed - it was just 3 years old and can not be repaired because Hotpoint decided to redesign their machines! Rather than a ball barring that could be replaced it has a fixed part that wore away and snapped. The drum dropped down and it stopped spinning.
We had the belt replaced about 6 months ago too. Hot point is going down hill fast (my Hotpoint washing machine broke after 3 years too!).
I am now without a dryer, on the week the dust has hit. I miss my dryer so much.

alistron1 · 05/04/2014 08:32

I am doing it. I am looking at my airer with hatred. Let us mark this day as 'tumble dryer day'

I have inherited my mothers 25 year old zanussi condenser dryer and its amazing. Huge drum and collects all the water inside in a tank to stop the house getting damp. I too never iron and love the convienience. Still peg out on a dry weekend day or summer time but highly recommend and it really has made my life easier.

Bingbongbinglybunglyboo · 05/04/2014 09:00

You deserve a tumble dryer. Enjoy it! Come back in a weeks time and tell us just how much you love it and that you can't believe you didn't have one for so long.

alistron1 · 05/04/2014 09:04

Vented vs condenser? Compact or full sized? There's so much choice!!

OP posts:
ColaConkie · 05/04/2014 09:04

I love mine. It hardly costs anything to run either.

alistron1 · 05/04/2014 09:05

Can you still get those bounce tumble dryer sheets? They had a lovely smell.

Joysmum · 05/04/2014 09:11

I was very pissed off that me DH opposed getting a drier because of running costs.

When our old washing died, I researched and found the washer drier I thought would best suit, found the cheapest place online and told DH to order it (I refuse to have a credit card but it offers more protection to buy with one).

The machine duly arrives and doesn't have a **ing drier Angry

He told me he'd been shopping around and this one was so much cheaper and he didn't realise it didn't have a drier. Tbh, when money gets a little easier again I'll present him with the payment details screen and get the right one. I never realised quite how much time I spend hanging out and bringing in washing, so for this reason alone I think it's worth having.

invicta · 05/04/2014 09:19

I never had one until a couple of years ago. It's worth it for bedding, towels and school uniforms. I still have football kit and non- tumble drier clothes on an airer, but the airer actually gets put away for half the week now, instead of being permantly out.

Previously, I hated that in between time when radiators aren't on, and it's not warmer enough to dry clothes outside.

I don't think the cost is that excessive.
