AIBU to feel bereft that Greggs has gone from my town?

That's it! It has gone. Shuttered up. I thought Greggs was riding the recession really well.

No more sausage rolls. No more Belgian buns. Shit shit shit.

We still have Percy Ingle - but it ain't the same.

Why can't you drive anywhere near any of our 3 Gregg's ffs!!!! It's lunchtime and I really have a hankering now.

Why is there no crying emoticon???

First world problems!!

TheListingAttic · 04/04/2014 13:40

Dammit! Now I'm going to have to go get a cheese and onion pasty for lunch. (Oh, the delicate joy!)

MrsBartowski · 04/04/2014 13:41

I was shocked that our greggs shut too.

I honestly got a bit scared - I mean, if Greggs can't survive around here we must be heading for another financial apocalypse or something!

I love Spikey Mikeys but I miss the white chocolate ones!

squoosh · 04/04/2014 13:45

I hate Greggs. They're all over Glasgow, every second shop is a Gregg's. Almost.

Take one, take a few!

dawntigga · 04/04/2014 13:51

I live near the town featured in the Sunday Sport Greggs story, you can have ours if only to save the numpty's

EverythingsDozy · 04/04/2014 14:12

Spikey mikey! Ooooh yes! I need to make a trip into our local shopping centre today, I might pick one up Grin

FelixFelix · 04/04/2014 14:13

What is a spikey mikey? Shock

TheHamster · 04/04/2014 14:14

Wtf is a Spikey Mikey Confused ?

bluesbaby · 04/04/2014 14:16

Amazing.

In my town, Tescos are moving out. Crazy. Of course they still have lots of metros around the housing estates, and a Tesco Extra on the edge of the town, but no Tesco in the town centre!

They're moving out because the rent is too high. the rent is too high for Tesco. Insane. Says a lot about my area. Greggs is still going though. ;)

EverythingsDozy · 04/04/2014 14:16

It's a delicious chocolate covered star biscuit as mentioned in PPs. You are missing out if you have never tried one!

bluesbaby · 04/04/2014 14:18

We have Greggs, mobile phone shops, betting shops, and charity shops left. We have a small M&S and a couple of women's fashion high street stores hanging on by the skin of their teeth.

FelixFelix · 04/04/2014 14:24

There's a Greggs built in the asda down the road from me. May ask DP to pick me up one of these infamous biscuits on the way home from work Grin

EyesCrossedLegsAkimbo · 04/04/2014 14:37

Move to Dundee, there has to be six Greggs in the centre.

Lovecat · 04/04/2014 14:39

I live in a scummy area of East London and we had 2 Greggses, one of which has recently closed. The closed one was 5 mins up the road on the way to the shops and the station, and the other one is a 25 min walk away on the other side of the shopping centre.

There is a Percy Ingle opposite the station but it's just not the same :(

I feel your pain OP.

MoominIsEightNinthsManatee · 04/04/2014 14:40

Couldn't be doing with not having a Greggs Shock

Need my steak bake and iced bun. OH came home from uni today with a bag full of their iced buns.

Is it obvious I'm heavily pregnant and craving icing

sparechange · 04/04/2014 14:47

The greggs near me closed before Christmas and is just about to reopen as a starbucks
I think this finally means my area is official Naice Grin

knickernicker · 04/04/2014 14:49

The stench of a Gregg's is what I think of. I remember killing myself trying to breast feed in hospital and the lucky Cow and Gate mums having Gregg's pasties and a chat.

AttillaTheHen · 04/04/2014 14:53

Re-open as a Starbucks? swoons clean away

We have two Costas here already, one in a Waterstones which is looking for that well-known combo, the 'bookseller/barista' right now.

Would a Starbucks be better than a charity shop? Dunno, really. The last one of those is struggling to get volunteers and hasn't filled their rails yet. Pish posh. It's a poor show.

HazeltheMcWitch · 04/04/2014 14:54

When Gentrification Goes Bad.

Sad
sparechange · 04/04/2014 14:59

We've got a few charity shops on the road as well. One of them looks like a boutique from the outside, the other looks like it sells the offcasts from Bagpuss's shop, and also offers tarot readings. Charity volunteer/psychic - another well known combo Grin
As well as taking the greggs shop, they've knocked through to one next door that was empty, so it will probably make the road look a bit tidier on the whole
We are very lucky to have a lovely italian deli that does the most amazing scotch eggs and sausage rolls, so I feel no loss from Greggs departing

JustAboutAdeqeuate · 04/04/2014 15:04

I read this as I was getting my hair cut, and decided to pick up a sandwich from Greggs for a late lunch but the greggs has closed down. And yes there is a shitty percy crap sandwich ingles a few doors away, mocking me. Grrr.

SilverOldie · 04/04/2014 15:45

I've never been to a Greggs. After seeing a prog about them on Pick tv about the sausage rolls being made would never eat one.

It's so easy to make your own - buy some ready made puff pastry and remove the skin from decent sausages easy peasy.

GoldenGytha · 04/04/2014 15:53

Aberdeen here and we have five Greggs.

You can have them all, as their stuff is horrible, not for any snobbish reasons, but I think their sausage rolls are the work of the devil.

I did have a chocolate iced doughring once though, and it wasn't bad.

squoosh · 04/04/2014 15:55

The sausage rolls have weird grey, sweaty meat in them.

VikingLady · 04/04/2014 15:57

We have 5! And we're only a small town. Plus 2 Cooplands and some independents. Clearly I live somewhere very scuzzy.
