Not to want to castrate my new dog?

He's 7yo, very well behaved, never agressive, very obedient. Previous owner did not neuter him, so why should i? Even though people in the park tell me off...

Found my old thread. Dog (Rudis) is getting on very well. He is completely an indoor dog. Doesnt even go into garden without human present.

I work in a vets and have seen far too many old dogs with prostate problems and testicular cancer. They have to be neutered as part of their treatment but are often elderly and in poor health.... Some have died during the anesthetic.
This is a routine procedure in a young dog and there are NO good reasons not to do it when there young.
op when your old dog develops a prostate problem and suffers great pain and discomfort... just remember that before he died his coat was shiny!.Hmm

I haven't read every page of this thread so apologies if I'm repeating anything - what really strikes me is how much opponents of castration humanise their dogs! I'm sure my dog (and any other dog) truly doesn't give a stuff if he has any bollocks or not! It's not a macho competition to see who has/hasn't got any! Apart from a few days of soreness, they don't notice and don't care!

I've been brought up with dogs (not bitches) since I was born, as have my parents (my mum was given her first pup at the age of 2!) and none of the many dogs we've had over the years have ever been neutered, and none have ever been a problem wrt bitches as far as I know. None have ever had testicular or prostate cancer either...

I don't yet have a dog of my own, but to be honest if I bought a dog I wouldn't castrate unless it was medically or behaviourally recommended by my vet. If I bought a bitch I would probably have her spayed, as I've never kept bitches before so wouldn't be entirely confident dealing with the oestrus cycle.

If you're responsible dog owners, whether with intact bitches OR dogs, then the chances of any accidents are low. Of course accidents can happen, but are you going to insist on every dog or every bitch being neutered to avoid them? How would we breed them then? I certainly don't think surgery should be done as an alternative to proper training and responsible ownership. My parents current two dogs even have several "girlfriends" which they walk with regularly and there haven't been any incidents!
