to want to buy normal fruit yoghurt that isn't reduced fat or with random bacteria in it?

Seriously! In a whole supermarket aisle of yoghurt and yoghurt adjacent products, every single fecking item was either activia or low fat.

I don't want activia! I don't want low fat (high sugar).

I just want yoghurt!

AIBU?

You could add cream, if you really want to have a fattier yoghurt.

It's all just milk in the end of the day.

There are other healthier sources of fat, though.

sebsmummy1 · 02/04/2014 16:52

Agree with buying natural yogurt and then adding fruit compote.

What REALLY pisses me off is the yogurt aimed at babies that is full of sugar. I really struggle to buy the Yeobaby yogurts as my local supermarket doesn't always stock them.

Just stop adding shed loads of sweetener and sugar to stuff FFS. The less sugar we eat the sweeter things taste, so we would all get used to it very quickly. Same with salt.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 02/04/2014 16:54

It's what they add to replace the fat that is the problem.

I can't believe people buy low fat thinking its better for them (in most cases, I imagine there are exceptions)

LumpySpacePrincessOhMyGlob · 02/04/2014 16:54

I feel your pain. The closest I get in our local Co-op is to buy a big tub of un-fucked about with greek yoghurt and have it with fruit.

MinesAPintOfTea · 02/04/2014 16:56

Yes we only have whole milk in this house. Everyone is fit and slender and we get good calorie-density for our money (on a budget).

SaucyJack · 02/04/2014 16:56

Having a senior moment Ice?

Tho I was thinking exactly the same thing in the Co-op t'other day tbf.

TheBigBumTheory · 02/04/2014 16:58

I haven't bought any small pot based puddings for years. Apart from the sugar, thickeners, sweeteners, and overhyped marketing they are a complete rip off.

mrsminiverscharlady · 02/04/2014 17:00

Low-fat yogurt has to have other things added to it (starches and sugar, typically) to give the right texture.

Not necessarily. Most low fat natural yogurt is just made from milk, check the ingredients next time you're shopping. I make yogurt from semi-skimmed milk every couple of days and I don't use anything but milk.

Flavoured ski-type yogurt has all kinds of other things added regardless of whether it's full or low fat.

MrsAtticus · 02/04/2014 17:01

I love longley farm yoghurts, they contain yoghurt (full fat), fruit and sugar, no weird ingredients!

Jemimapuddleduk · 02/04/2014 17:05

I would recommend longley farm (morrisons or Sainsburys stock) or m and s creamy ones. I also dislike low fat yoghurts.

MrsKoala · 02/04/2014 17:10

Only full fat milk here too. Full fat everything in fact.

ouryve · 02/04/2014 17:11

YANBU. We normally end up buying Yeo Valley or M&S organic for DS1, whose daily dairy source tends to be a fruit yoghurt with his breakfast. Absolutely everything else appears to be far too messed with. We get langley farm yoghurt occasionally, too, but our little local Sainsburys doesn't have it in very often.

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 02/04/2014 17:14

Sebsmummy, have you tried the basic fruit yogurts from sainsburys? They also do set ones. They have a lot less sugar than named brands.

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 02/04/2014 17:17

I watched a documentary the other night about why it's better to have full fat milk but I can't remember why now. That fit jimmy Doherty was on it.

CountessOfRule · 02/04/2014 17:29

Why would I not want the special bacteria?

Because they give me the shits. I have perfectly respectable and healthy digestion normally. A pot of Activia or similar gives me cramps and then diarrhoea, because it speeds up my digestion. No thanks.

Sicaq · 02/04/2014 20:11

The Lancashire farm natural yoghurts are lovely - they come in 1kg tubs of either natural (lowish fat) or Greek style (10% fat). Asda or Morrisons for around £1.20.

And they're from Lancashire so you KNOW they must be good Grin

Sicaq · 02/04/2014 20:12

Activia really shocked me when I looked at the sugar content of a strawberry one - it had over 13 g of sugar in one little pot! I'm not a health freak but that just seemed over the top. Really dishonest marketing.

treaclesoda · 02/04/2014 20:20

full fat everything in our house too, and we're all slim and healthy.

Although weirdly I did a stumble across yoghurt marketed as 0% fat a couple of weeks ago in Tesco and I read the ingredients in detail and there didn't seem to be a load of crap in it either, and it wasn't rammed full of sugar. Tasted nice too. But presumably it was made by witchcraft because I can't think how else they did it.

jan2014 · 02/04/2014 21:52

which one was that treacle

treaclesoda · 02/04/2014 22:03

I think it was Danio yoghurt.

But only the plain fat free or the one with a fruit layer. If you get the actual fruit yoghurt, it's like all the rest of them, full of all sorts of stuff.

jan2014 · 03/04/2014 08:50

thank you i will have a look.... one of us needs to start a business of affordable yoghurt with no junk in it! would make a fortune!

arselikekylie · 03/04/2014 08:57

Get an Easiyo and make your own. It's lovely and very, very easy.

SHIT! I really did make the same thread twice?

OP posts:
IceBeing · 03/04/2014 09:19

Okay making own yoghurt....this is going to be like getting a bread maker and never using it.....

OP posts:
IceBeing · 03/04/2014 09:20

There is definitely a difference between eating normal yoghurt and activia.

The main one is that when you stop eating activia your stomach swells up like a balloon...
