To not want someones hot breath on the back of my neck

Is it so much to ask that I can queue in Boots with a reasonable amount of space around me and not have the guy behind me be so close his shopping bag touches my arse.

"Move forward then", I hear you say, but in doing this the bag-bum-toucher space invader also moves forward, thus creating a sardine situation as I am getting up close and personal with the poor lady in front of me, who thinks that I am now a space invader.

IABU to have turned round to say "Can you give me some space please?". Space invader looked at me like I'd just kicked him in the nuts and looked very indignant, but he did stop moving forward. I felt a bit bad but then decided I may have just saved another unwilling victim from his shopping bag bum touchery.

Oh I'd love to turn around and shout 'move back fuckers,' like The Dude.

SauvignonBlanche · 02/04/2014 19:42

Someone did this to me at JL cafe once, it was so strange, it put me off my coffee.

BumPotato · 02/04/2014 19:48

Yuck, I was going through security with my family lately in Kuala Lumpar airport. My children and DH were ahead of me. The ageing man behind me blew on the back of my neck. My death stare didn't quite do the trick unfortunately.

PetiteBateau · 02/04/2014 19:49

Yanbu, I hate that. I would've asked him to back away without doubt. Ugh

BumPotato · 02/04/2014 19:51

Oh and on a tram in Croydon I stepped back with my stiletto boot on to the female behinds toes, when the tram braked suddenly. She shouted "you've broken my fucking toes!". I replied "don't stand so fucking close then"

hiddenhome · 02/04/2014 19:57

Visitors to my place of work always stand too close when talking to me. I find that men always maintain a comfortable distance, but the women (mainly older ones) are practically close enough to count nose hairs Hmm

PunkrockerGirl · 02/04/2014 20:10

YANBU. This gives me the absolute rage and warrants a custodial sentence Grin Some excellent suggestions on this thread though!

DomesticSlobbess · 02/04/2014 20:15

YANBU! Makes me so angry and uncomfortable!

I was buying a train ticket with DS at the ticket machine the other day, and while I waited for the tickets to print out, a woman was standing right next to me, so I had to lean over to get the tickets out. I could actually hear her breathing while I waited, she was that close. I gave her a good stare but she didn't seem to get it. I wish I had the balls to say something in awkward social situations.

DownstairsMixUp · 02/04/2014 20:25

Space invaders have no personal space awareness. They need to go on some sort of course to teach them. I get so annoyed by it even at work! The other day I was serving a lady who had a massive basket full of stuff so clearly I was going to be serving her quite some time and the customer behind literally was like touching her arse! When she got out her card to pay she looked at me as if WTF is this person doing so I had to politely ask customer to step back whilst other customer entered their pin. Other customer looked at me like I was bonkers! They really don't get it!

Emilycee · 02/04/2014 20:29

My fil stands too close, he is deaf in one ear fair enough but why not just turn his head towards the person talking?!

He also smokes cigars and his breath literally smells of shit. Makes me cringe - I step back and he steps forward - arrrrggggh! Rage!

NorbertDentressangle · 02/04/2014 20:40

It's bad enough when someone stands close anyway but when there's a smell to deal with too (fag-breath, BO, overpowering perfume etc) it makes it ten times worse

TruffleOil · 02/04/2014 20:44

Oh, Emily, that sounds quite bad - breath of shit?

I worked with someone once on a summer internship whose breath also smelled of shit, but she was a very young, fresh, wholesome, non-smoking type. I couldn't reconcile it. I shrieked endlessly to my roommates about it.

arkestra · 02/04/2014 21:01

I get very clumsy when people are a bit too close. End up bumping them, can't be helped Wink - but always trying to stay on the passive side of aggressive. My own personal hell (being a Londoner) is people shoving on the tube before those trying to get off have managed to do so. What's all that about then?

MorrisZapp · 02/04/2014 21:05

OMG I hate this so much. I carry quite a big bag on my shoulder, and have lost count of how many times I've 'nudged' somebody who's been standing far too close. They always look aggrieved as if to say stop nudging me!!!

Conversely, I've noticed that in bus stops people like to stand four feet apart, so that only three people can fit in the shelter while twenty huddle in the rain behind them.

Emilycee · 02/04/2014 21:34

Truffle - yes, it is grim. I feel mean because he is a nice fil apart from that - years of smoking lots of cigars every day ick!

Am pregnant too so it makes my stomach turn :-( am dreading handing my newborn over to him but he is so exited! Argh!

TruffleOil · 02/04/2014 21:48

Poo-scented baby :-)

Emilycee · 02/04/2014 22:18

Oh god don't! I might have to go into hiding! :-)

Pleasejustgo · 02/04/2014 22:40

Babies and poo go hand in hand. Sigh.

SixImpossible · 02/04/2014 23:59

SDTG me too! I hate the feeling of someone's breath on me - not even my own. I'm always telling dh to stop breathing in bed. TBH I generally just shriek say it in my head, because, after all, he can't really help doing it. But I have several times accidentally yanked the quilt up over his face, a little firmly, perhaps.

I love all these rejoinders, hair-flicks and bottom grindings. Bbut someone, please, tell me what I could have done about wobbly walking-stick woman and her hot breath? Honestly, she was huffing so hard on me that my hair was flying up!

PatrickStarisabadbellend · 03/04/2014 00:18

I hate it when people with bad breath breath on me. I work in a shop and quite a few of my customers have rotting teeth, they bloody well stink.

IsChippyMintonExDirectory · 03/04/2014 00:55

There really is nothing more disheartening than when you are comfy in bed about to drift off and your DH decides to change sleeping position and puts his poo breath right in your face. I also do the duvet barrier trick! Mind you I don't even like being cuddled in bed, makes me feel very claustrophobic and I'd happily have a bed to myself for the rest of our marriage (I'd still shag in it but just fall asleep separately). I had a friend who kicked off at a hotel because they accidentally booked her and her DH a twin room instead of a double. It sounded like my idea of bliss!

Oh, I cannot abide someone standing on top of me in a queue. Was in Tesco the other day and the prick delightful gentleman behind me near put his groceries down on top of mine, then practically stood on my heels. A well timed step backwards or elbow swinging stretch works well in such situations.

The airport thing is absurd, I once worked airport security, and some passengers would practically leap on the pax ahead of them and ride them piggyback through the metal detector in order to rush on through. The concept of an orderly queue is lost on many people in airports. It was infuriating.

I also cannot hack DP breathing on me in bed. Even with freshly brushed teeth. We usually cuddle then roll over and sleep with our backs to each other. Occasionally he rolls right over to my side of the bed and breathes all over me. Then I want to suffocate him with his pillow.

Selks · 03/04/2014 01:35

Someone sneezed on the back of my neck the other day....it was totally rank.
And being wide of bum I'm always getting bumped on the arse with bags and trollies. Grrr Angry

Monty27 · 03/04/2014 01:38

The world is too crowded with people without manners or etiquette, no seriously, it really is Grin

VisualiseAHorse · 03/04/2014 01:54

SDGT I am currently lying on the couch because OH keeps breathing iny direction while he's sleeping. Every time I roll hi over, he just rolls back and does it again.
