OH HOLY GOD.
I AM SO SCARED AND PANICKY RIGHT NOW

I WAS JUST GOING TO GET A LATE NIGHT SNACK FROM THE KITCHEN WHEN THIS BEAST OF A MOUSE DARTED PAST ME AND SPED INTO MY LIVING ROOM.........

I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A FEAR OF A RAT BITING MY BUM WHILE I'M ON THE LOO.

WILL IT COME INTO MY BEDROOM WHILE I SLEEP?
OH MY GOD
SHOULD I CALL PEST CONTROL????

NEVER SEEN A MOUSE IN REAL LIFE BEFORE NOW. NEVER SEEN A MOUSE IN THIS HOUSE BEFORE. DOES THIS MEAN I AM SLATTERNLY?

CAN'T CALL DP AS HE WOULD THINK I AM MAD.

you would hate my house then.....these are my babies. i have 9 of em....they live in harmony with my cats and my dogs. ok, so wildies are a bit different but i often rescue live mice from our cat and take them to the allotments up the road for release! rats make lovely pets and mice are nice!
it wont hurt you. get a humane trap and take it a few miles away and let it go.

Winston Smith? Is that you?

steff13 · 01/04/2014 02:05

We saw one in our utility closet on Thursday! I was freaked out, but we decided to clean out the closet an put humane traps out on Friday.

I went to the kitchen Thursday to get a drink, and heard the cat (Cher) banging around in the dining room. Lo and behold, there she was batting the (now dead) mouse around. Her sister cat (Sunni) was watching. They're lazy, spoiled indoor cats. I didn't think they had it in them.

cafecito · 01/04/2014 02:11

oh ok then, I concede there is a vast difference in Vicar's and the underfloor invaders..
one has a coat its almost cute Grin

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 01/04/2014 02:21

Oh Vicar, don't post photos like that. Since we've gotten the hound, I have DP driven mad with my wanting to bring home every dog and cat that my local animal rescue are looking to rehome. A few more cute pics like that and I'll be like the Pied Piper Grin.

ThatVikRinA22 · 01/04/2014 02:25

my rodents are super cute, intelligent and loving! i adore them. i actually really do love them. i get anxious knowing they only live for a few years....they have personality, they are funny, loving even. i have 3 boys (pictured) and 6 girls, they come out of their cages and follow me around the house....even dh said he knows how the pied piper did it now...they just follow me about like little dogs.....they are so cuddly. they show happiness by bruxing and boggling, its the ratty equivalent to purring!....i have happy rats! ive no idea why people dont like them. their tails are a feat of engineering.....they use it to balance, and regulate temperature. io love my ratties and i dont care who thinks im bonkers. my mate says im eccentric....but rats do make excellent pets. mine are litter trained. you can even teach them tricks....they are as trainable as dogs.

they are much maligned....

ThatVikRinA22 · 01/04/2014 02:26

shadows most of my lot are rescues! im a sucker for a sob story....

nooka · 01/04/2014 02:29

We have lots of mice (actually I think they are some sort of shew, very sweet) that get brought in by the cats or think that they have found a safe warm place in the winter. The cats like to play with them and the dog just munches them up when he finds them (often in between the two cats).

I try and rescue them when I can. Poor little mice! But we aren't in a city, so they are really field mice and don't carry diseases etc. I wasn't so keen about seeing them in my old office (by Waterloo train station). Still better than the cockroaches!

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 01/04/2014 02:35

Vicar, now you have me wanting rats. Shite. We are moving to the country next year, I've already convinced DP that we need dogs and chickens. Now I'll have to add rats to the list. Yours do look rather cuddly. Once I mention their feat of engineering tails, engineer DP will want a whole colony Grin.

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 01/04/2014 02:45

Oh, I'm a sucker for a sob story too, Vicar. Since we got the hound, I'm obsessed. In fact, I'm loath to tell this on here, but I recently saw a piece on tv about abused dogs, and had a proper visceral reaction. Honestly thought I was going to be sick. When we had the hound out at the beach last Sat, I worried about what would happen if he darted in front of a car (though he never would do that). I'd have darted right after him. Seriously

ThatVikRinA22 · 01/04/2014 02:54

they are rather lovely shadows! they need lots of stimulation. i have taken every rescue rat at pets@home! im now known as "the rat lady" and my poor hubby is now "husband of the rat lady" by default......

they are fab. i adore mine. girls are more active and naughty - less cuddly. all my girls are rescues. all dumbo eared. my boys are big, fat and lazy. they just live to be cuddled....they are very clean as pets go. one boy is a rescue, p@h made such a fuss of how aggressive he was....he just didnt like being in a tank. He was a changed boyo the night i got him home. Rats spend a lot of time washing. i actually love the smell of mine....big cage necessary - lots of time out free ranging, and lots of cuddles. tons of toys in the cage is a must...mine have wheels, balls to play with, cargo nets to climb, sputniks, ropes, and hammocks. i hide food (they love to forage!) they love monkey nuts, and will tackle a walnut - it keeps them occupied for days! they get fresh food daily (kale is especially good for them)along with a lovely mixed feed. You can train rats - they can do tricks. they are so highly intelligent - they give you feedback! ive got 9 of them, dd has a hamster.....my dh calls the hamster the supermodel of the rodent world....it looks pretty but there isnt much going on! rats on the other hand.....Smile

yes. people think im bonkers. i really dont care! not a rats arse! lol. my rats endorse that wholeheartedly...they would not lend their arses lightly! Grin

confuddledDOTcom · 01/04/2014 03:00

In my mid-late teens I used to spend my summers with my grandparents in Canada. One day my grandad was at a baseball match and I can't remember where Grandma was, I was watching TV and a mouse ran across the room in front of me! I spent the rest of the night sat on the hydro box outside their house refusing to go in until someone came home, was about 9pm I think!

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 01/04/2014 03:20

Vicar, your wee ratties sound brilliant. The only that would worry me, were we to get some would be the Weimy. He loves to hunt. Perhaps they could live alongside each other? Your account of owning rats makes me think that they would be lovely pets, but a house with a Weimy might not be the best place for them Sad

ThatBloodyWoman · 01/04/2014 08:01

scottishmummy you wouldn't have been impressed with my dh then.
When we had a (rather cute) family of mice living in our kitchen a few years ago, I discovered him feeding them.

I'm a tree-hugger, but that's a step too far even for me.

saintmerryweather · 01/04/2014 08:32

I want a pet rat now thanks vicar!

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 01/04/2014 18:36

Hi fives Vicar

Ditto everything you say about rats! These are the new babies I got after I had to have my old boy PTS a couple of weeks ago Sad

I already have them trained to sit down my top, but they're nowhere near as warm as old fatty rattie was Grin

HOLY FUCKING SHIT....JUST SEEN A MOUSE...WIBU TO RUN AWAY FROM THIS HOUSE?
ohmymimi · 01/04/2014 19:04

Yes, watch out, it'll chase you round the house and try trip you up with it's scaly little tail and then maul you with it's razor sharp little teeth. While you're asleep it'll sit on the bedpost watching you, while twiddling it's whiskery whiskers, planning dire deeds. You have been warned. Shock

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/04/2014 23:05

You never get "a mouse in the house"
Never in singular (just saying)

ThatVikRinA22 · 02/04/2014 02:42

yay! mycar....a fellow rat appreciator! there arent that many of us you know....we should stick together.

i really do love my rats. i wish they lived longer.

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 02/04/2014 03:00

MyCar, that photo of your little rat peering out of it's cage made me grin. How adorable. Just showed it to DP and it made him all gooey eyed too Grin.

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 02/04/2014 07:36

Vicar you'd be surprised Wink. I met some of my best friends through ratties years and years ago, when I used to have hundreds quite a few! I stopped for about 10 years as I had a holiday planned (no sitter) then fell pregnant. Only had my big fat boys for 6 months as they were already 2 when I adopted them last year - hoping these guys live a little longer!

Shadows He looks just like a little mouse doesn't he, so that's my excuse for posting that pic and totally derailing the tread Wink
