To think plus size clothes should be modelled by plus size women?

Specifically looking at ASOS curve at the moment trying to find a dress for a wedding.

Love their range as it can be hard to find big sizes of clothes I actually like anywhere else.

Is it so much to ask that the person modelling the clothes represents who is actually going to be buying and wearing them?!

I know traditionally designers etc use slim models because they think this shows off the clothes better. Fair enough. Since this range is designed for bigger women, surely it should suit bigger women and therefore look good being modelled by them?

This isn't supposed to be offensive to anyone at all, whatever size! I just want to get a bit of an idea of how something will look on me before I buy it!

ASOS curve are modelled by plus size women, aren't they?

I wish it were commoner to give the model's measurements for all clothes - being shortish, I like to know if the model is 6 foot tall!

Someone (on here?) suggested that, with modern technology, it should be possible to type your own measurements into a site and have it tell you how clothes should look on you. I'd love it if in the future we could have that.

SinglePringle · 29/03/2014 17:03

ASOS Curve is modelled by appropriately sized models isn't it?

UriGeller · 29/03/2014 17:03

They usually give the size that the models wearing Dont they?

Personally at 5'3 I wish all clothes weren't modelled by 6' tall women.

formerbabe · 29/03/2014 17:05

I don't get how the curve range starts at a size 18 but the models look like a 14-16 to me...

Namechangesrus · 29/03/2014 17:05

Some of the women look a little bit larger but overall they are still slim. I noticed a few in particular who can't be over a size 10. I think the criteria to become a plus size model must be quite a low size (in my opinion anyway!)
I know they can never please everyone but it just seems a bit sad and is very irritating when trying to shop online!
The idea you suggested is great, I hope that does happen!

Now you mention it, I'm sure I do remember seeing the size model wears before. Must be because I'm on my phone (or I could be missing it!)

Formerbabe has summarised exactly what I was trying to say!

When I've used 'plus sized' (hate the term) models for thugs in the past, they've usually been size 16 or 18 (biggest available) but they'll be 6ft plus so are totally in proportion.

There were no other girls I could book.

SinglePringle · 29/03/2014 17:09

things not thugs Grin!!

cardibach · 29/03/2014 17:13

I've just had a look as I need a dress for a family wedding. Not only do they all appear plus size, but also the dresses are crap. Nothing there that would actually flatter a plus size shape...and you can see that because the models look awful in them. Back to the drawing board.

MissUumellmahaye · 29/03/2014 17:18

Yep, they are plus size models, but they always have relatively slim arms, flattish stomachs and long toned legs. They also have slim faces relative to their shape and lots of big swishy hair to balance the look out.

The world of plus size modelling is as aspirational as it is for sample size models, they're not going to use someone 5 foot 4 with bingo wings, flabby veiny thighs and a belly overhang. Otherwise they'd use me. Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/03/2014 17:21

Agree with cardi.

However, I do think it's relevant that 'size 14' can mean a heck of a lot of different things in different shops.

tethersend · 29/03/2014 17:27

Am I the only one who suspects ASOS of photoshopping slim models into plus size ones?

SinglePringle · 29/03/2014 17:29

Nah, don't see that as being the case Tethers. They look very similar to the models I used to book for shoots.

WorraLiberty · 29/03/2014 17:34

I think MissUumellmahaye has it right.

They are plus sized models but because they're toned and not lumpy/flabby, they don't look like most of the plus sized people we see in everyday life.

Optimist1 · 29/03/2014 17:35

Agreed, OP. And while we're at it, could we please make manufacturers of anti-aging products use models who are considerably over 29?

trinity0097 · 29/03/2014 17:42

Look at the curvety website for plus size clothes modelled by larger sizer ladies.

andsmile · 29/03/2014 17:45

I noticd on HofF this weekend their plus size collection is modelled by large models.

Also think it was M&S has true fit thing like LRD was on about as well as an online stylist - you fill in your measurements and preferences and then they send you suggestions...

Try Phase Eight or your dress there are some in sale, and HofF still has sale items.

andsmile · 29/03/2014 17:48

Mint Velvet (I know this is a bit marmite) go up to a size 18 if this is ay good. I find the empire line with gatherd sticking following line of hip down to be flattering. But avoid their boxy knits - terible and some of the quality is poor.

Highly recommend their silk panel ts

Namechangesrus · 29/03/2014 18:01

Thanks for the recommendation andsmile, I'm a 22 though so no good for me!

Agree with MissUumellmahaye and Worra about proportions!

WorraLiberty · 29/03/2014 18:04

That's models for you

I'm a size 8-10 but none of the models bodies reflect mine

That's possibly something to do with the 3 sprogs I pushed out and the fact I'm nearly 45 Hmm Grin

AuditAngel · 29/03/2014 18:07

Have you tried Curvissa? I bought a couple of bikinis from them in September and a dress to pop over them. The sizing was about right compared to M&S (I was a generous size 20, I've now lost a stone and a generous 20 is too big but some older M&S 20's are sill a bit tight)

QueenStromba · 29/03/2014 19:09

They all look about size 18 to me.

mrssmith79 · 29/03/2014 19:14

Pink Clove? Some bargains on there atm.

andsmile · 29/03/2014 19:15

M&S plus size - I saw they have that online now, some things are ok

Alisvolatpropiis · 29/03/2014 20:38

Plus size models aren't hired with dramatically different requirements than non plus size. The only difference will be the clothes size bracket they must fit in.

They will be taller than average, more attractive than average, proportionally more symmetrical than average.

So plus size models are about as likely to reflect what the plus size woman on the street as a non plus size model is a non plus size woman. Not at all, in short.
