To think plus size clothes should be modelled by plus size women?

Specifically looking at ASOS curve at the moment trying to find a dress for a wedding.

Love their range as it can be hard to find big sizes of clothes I actually like anywhere else.

Is it so much to ask that the person modelling the clothes represents who is actually going to be buying and wearing them?!

I know traditionally designers etc use slim models because they think this shows off the clothes better. Fair enough. Since this range is designed for bigger women, surely it should suit bigger women and therefore look good being modelled by them?

This isn't supposed to be offensive to anyone at all, whatever size! I just want to get a bit of an idea of how something will look on me before I buy it!

I think the issue is size 10-12 is classed as plus size in modle world

WorraLiberty · 29/03/2014 20:59

Alisvolatpropiis put into words, what I was struggling with Grin

SinglePringle · 29/03/2014 21:02

10-12 is considered large in catwalk & high fashion modeling. Not in catalogue / weekly & some monthly magazine editorial / television (say, Daybreak and This Morning). When I was booking models, we usually wanted a size 10/12 as a normal size. We didn't like them thinner than that.

JennyOnAPlate · 29/03/2014 21:06

I'm a size 18 and those models are definitely not as fat as me. Not by a long way.

andsmile · 29/03/2014 21:08

No low hang c section tummys on them is there?

SinglePringle · 29/03/2014 21:10

How tall are you Jenny? These women are likely to be 5'10 and over.

rainbowfeet · 29/03/2014 21:14

Seeing as if ASOS curve starts at an 18 then yes I agree with you OP.. The range is selected especially for larger ladies & should be modeled by them & those of average height too!! I follow a number of plus size models & bloggers on twitter & seeing them in ranges such as curve & simply Be is brilliant because it shows how I might look in clothes & has given me more confidence to be proud of my wobbly bits Smile

I think the thing is plus size models may be 'curvy' because they have lovely hour glass hips but no real fat bits or 'soft flesh' as they call it on the shopping Chanel's so what looks good on them I would need much more than control pants to make look good! Although according to Katie Hopkins since Mango plus size range starts at a 12 anyone an 18 plus daren't expect to find nice clothes as we should hide away in shame!!!

Twattyzombiebollocks · 29/03/2014 23:25

I've just had a look, those are definitely size 18 women, I'm 5ft 10 and a size 16 and they are def bigger than me

Maverick66 · 30/03/2014 00:45

Size 20/22here, have spent whole day traipsing round city centre for wedding outfit nothing was right such differences from shop to shop in size and fit. Nothing below the knee and everything polyester/nylon. Evans is frump heaven! Conclusion I have come to is - not only are you invisible in your forties but you are also not worth fashion designers time. There is a real market for quality larger sizes for the peri/menopausal woman! I just want quality affordable well cut key pieces ;(;(;(

Piscivorous · 30/03/2014 00:56

Taking Shape are really good, I've had quite a bit from them recently. It's much better quality than Evans and Simply Be. I also like some of the David Emanuel stuff at Bon Marche

Maverick I think I love you for that last post! There is definitely an issue for those of us who are larger and over the age of 21.

I love curvety (I got my bridesmaid dress from there. The bride loved it so much she ordered two more, one for her and one for another bridesmaid! :o ) Lovely stuff but so pricey.

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 30/03/2014 03:32

Also look at Yours.co.uk. Nearly all my stuff is from there, it's way cheaper and nicer than Evans, Simply be etc. if you look for voucher codes there is always at least £25 off a £50 spend for first timers and they have a 70% off sale at the moment too.

mythical · 30/03/2014 10:18

I love asos curve. I practically live in their jersey skater dresses. It's supposed to be a 20-26 range but they were advertising for size 12-14 models a couple of years back..

AlpacaPicnic · 30/03/2014 11:25

All I want (and I don't think I'm asking for the moon on a stick here) is plain black trousers with a stretchy waistband and pockets. Combat style ones would be nice, but anything I could wear to work and be comfy would do.

I don't want prints. I don't want busted knees, I don't want harem pants with ankle cuffs. I want pockets. So I can keep my keys and phone on me.

Pockets!

Namechangesrus · 31/03/2014 16:21

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar - thanks a lot, lots of nice stuff on here (yoursclothing) :)

No problem name change. Alpaca if you find combats will you let me know please? Other than some horrendous see through, easily ripped pair from Evans a couple of years ago I can't find any. Just plain black ones with pockets will do.

AlpacaPicnic · 02/04/2014 13:37

Haha! I think I had the same pair!

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 02/04/2014 14:13

Did they have a fabric tie (the same colour of the kecks)? It didn't actually tighten the waist. They ripped along the inner seam within two wears. Hmm I got some from Yours a couple of years ago but they look shite now.

singleandfabulous · 02/04/2014 14:59

Just had a look at some wedding type dresses on the ASOS Curve website and most say that the model is 5'9"/5'10" and wears a size 18 so that is definitely plus sized. Curvissa do good plus sized models too.

stonehairbrush · 02/04/2014 15:04

What reeeealy annoys me about asos curve is that the dresses (on the 5'9" models) look like decent lengths -knee length or just below. When I wear them (I'm 5'6") they just about cover my minge

stonehairbrush · 02/04/2014 15:06

Maverick - if your budget can stretch try Vivienne Westwood

Also have a look at Anna Schultz's website

And Navabi

Now-a-days there are plus size models who are specially used to model for the stylish and trendy plus size clothing. You can also get more details on this at casual-plus.com online.
