Well everyone really. On account there is not actually one hive mind and opinion,

And what you really mean when you say this is I only ever notice people who do not agree with my way of the world. So I blame a website.

And it really bugs me when the media do it to Mnet.

I'm not at all sure I understand it and have not touched a drop.

Maybe it becomes clearer with some alcohol in the system.

Can you explain one more time OP?

MyChemicalGerard · 28/03/2014 19:43

I agree only on MN do people get upset by nonsense that no one in RL would give second thought to. I said so. I got called goady :)

Tweasels · 28/03/2014 19:43

I do think people say stuff on here that they don't really think. Or at least I hope that's the case...or society is fucked Grin

MyChemicalGerard · 28/03/2014 19:43

That said no one on here is completely the same so its silly to accuse everyone of being the same opinion people.

mrspremise · 28/03/2014 19:44

Everyone is entitled to my opinion... Grin

Bowlersarm · 28/03/2014 19:48

But you can get involved in debates and arguments on here because they have come up on here. They may simply not come up in RL. For example, I was gobsmacked to read on here that people think it's perfectly acceptable to get a table in a cafe before you purchase your drink! Shock. Everyone does it apparently. Well, I never knew that. I had never talked about in RL.

There are so many more examples. P&C parking spaces-I have no idea what my RL friends think, but I am fairly certain I know what will be said on an MN thread.

I don't know anyone in real life who has even gave a second thought to P&C spaces. Only on Mumsnet...

Sorry HD Grin

But they are still the opinions of RL people, and if it were always the one opinion than there wouldn't regularly be threads running to 1000 posts rehashing similar arguments and never resolving.

I don't notice the expression so much when used in good humour, but I hate it when used in that sneery invalidity statements way. Sad

OP posts:
HoneyDragon · 28/03/2014 19:58

Tweasels, local to me aretwo facebook parenting forums. Boy, do they like to discuss the lack of P&C spaces, including discussing starting a campaign to reduce the number of unnecessary disabled spaces to allow more families adequate parking Hmm

I have sometimes thought "only on mumsnet".

One example is those posters who think that going out once in a while to socialise with your friends at night and staying out late, and possibly being hungover the next day, is a moral crime against your husband and children.
I've seen a good bit of "I don't see why any adult with a child and responsibilities needs to go out drinking" and "well I feel sorry for your children" and other such guff pertaining to the same.

Only on mumsnet. Never met a single person in rl who has expressed that view to me.
Makes me realise that mumsnet really is made up of all sorts.

FutTheShuckUp · 28/03/2014 20:03

Im bored of all these anti-clique type threads lately. Just as irritating as clique threads in fact.

MyChemicalGerard · 28/03/2014 20:05

Maybe its because MN allows people to over express their feelings to a wider audience- the written word has no intonation so they have to 'over sell the argument they are making. Someone on another thread earlier was so angry and sweary because someone said all children love strawberries...
Confused

pictish · 28/03/2014 20:06

maybe it's because in rl the middle classes don't like to say how much they hate ear piercings/headbands/ford mondeos/primark

but on mn it's okay for them to vent so they do sort of have a collective voice that they can all agree with

and use the phrase 'inverse snobbery when someone disagrees with them Grin see i am collecting them all together but it is true

Tweasels · 28/03/2014 20:13

Shock HoneyD that's hideous.

Being part of an Internet community opens you up to conversing with people who in RL you might never take the time to even smile at. This is generally a good thing but sometimes introduces you to people who are complete fucknuts.

The phrase "only on mumsnet..." Can probably applied to a million other things. Facebook definitely being one.

thebody · 28/03/2014 20:15

only heard the expression 'baby wearing' and 'attachment parenting beads' on mumsnet and out of pixie Geldofs gob but other than that and the strange obsession with P&C parking I agree with you.

TheLightPassenger · 28/03/2014 20:15

hmm. but surely any community develops its own conventions/social rules/encouraged attitudes, so MN develops some of its own norms, and it is sometimes reasonable to feel that "only on MN".
