AIBU to think you can't wash up without using a plug?

So the dishwasher is out of action until next week. As I do all the cooking, DH is in charge of clearing up afterwards. He asks me to dry the washing up whilst he's doing it as there isn't much space on the rack.

So I watch him run the hot tap, squirt fairy on each item, frantically rub it with a sponge (just the inside) and hand it to me without rinsing.

Of course I'm handing stuff back still covered in soap, food etc.

He goes nuts, if he can't do it his way I should do it myself.

He's now sulking upstairs.

Is it just me?

Well I wash up in a washin up bowl, so no plug needed, but in the circumstances you have posted YANBU

Why doesn't he just rinse the dishes after he's washed them, and then give them to you?

And wash up more effectively?

So you cook but still have to dry?

You can wash up without a plug, but he is not washing up, he is playing "its too difficult for me, the wife can do it".

We use a dishmatic brush. Soap goes in brush handle, they wash in running water. I wouldn't use a plug as grim then floating about

Well if he can wash them his way you can dry them yours, surely?

I would let him get on with it. Then I would pour boiling water over all the dishes to rinse them. Leave them 20 minutes and put them away. You won't have to dry them. It is a great system!

i rinse what needs washing, put liquid on sponge, clean plates etc then rinse

Let him.do it his way, with no help from you. When he gers a manky soapy food crusted plate at the next meal then he might rinse them better.
You can have your own plate for yourself, or just get disposable ones.
He wants you to sigh and say "fine, I'll do it if you can't do it properly" It is a classic used by both sexes.

He wants you to dry them covered in suds? Does he also climb out of the shower without rinsing off?

I rinse everything first, then wash up with really hot water and washing up liquid. Cutlery in the bottom of the bowl to soak, glasses first, then cups, then plates, rinsing the suds off... then empty the bowl and refill for pots and pans. If you rinse first properly, there's no food swimming around.

Tripe city, my DP does that too... It's foul.

I have a variant on all the above I think... I stack into the washing up bowl so there's enough space at the top for glasses etc, then run a thin stream of hot water into it. Splash of detergent into the bowl, splash on the sponge, then wash everything under the running tap so it's rinsed as well, but the stuff in the bowl gets a bit of a soak before it sees the light.

I was trying for a system that used the least water. I may have overthunk it though.

YABU, but so is he by not rinsing! Rinse everything first, wash up under hot running water and WUL and rinse again, before putting it on the rack.

Washing up liquid on sponge, wash under running hot tap and rinse same time.

You don't need a plug to rinse, so YABU, but you do need to rinse!

Our plug pretty much never gets used, on the rare occasions I wash up, it's always done under running water.

I hate plugs, you're basically washing plates in dirty water imo as the food from the previous plates is floating around the sink.

But as others have said, your dh is taking the piss and not washing up properly.

When I was in the girl guides (eons ago) I remember there was a section in the handbook on how to wash up. Maybe it wasn't in the Scout's handbook! I reckon Carmine was a girl guide too.

'How to wash up' was also in the brownies handbook. You had to do it to get your house orderly badge (as well as washing your socks and making tea and toast).

OP, he would drive me mad. I agree, give him the manky plates to eat off and he'll soon learn. My DH thinks that rinsing a glass under the cold tap, no suds of any kind, constitutes washing it, so you are not alone.
