Hockey seems more dangerous than Rugby to me

Confession: I have never played hockey

Confession 2: I played a heck of a rugby as a youth and broke bones and still have scars.

But still Hockey seems such a more dangerous support, waving those sticks in the air.

When I was at uni, we played a 'rugby' match against the girl's hockey team, we lost a lot of blood!

My DP plays hockey every week.

Some of the injuries he's had since we've been together are just Shock

I refuse to watch him play anymore Grin

meditrina · 25/03/2014 19:06

You're not meant to wave the sticks in the air (can be a foul).

Perhaps you could try lacrosse?

Wantsunshine · 25/03/2014 19:06

My husband has lost teeth and has so many broken bones, been knocked out and is always getting stitches due to hockey. It is very dangerous. He loves if though! Must be all the bangs to the head!

NoMoreMuddyTrousers · 25/03/2014 19:07

No way. Hockey you might get whacked with a ball or a stick, but rugby you risk concussion.

I'm jolly hockey sticks all the way.

Plus, it's one of the only sports (like tennis) that truly appeals to both sexes. So the club socials are inherently better...!

DumbleDee · 25/03/2014 19:08

I played hockey for 5 years. Had 2 hospital visits. My sons play rugby - I have a private parking space at the fracture clinic. Rugby is more dangerous both for acute and chronic injuries IMO.

meditrina · 25/03/2014 19:09

This is bringing back fond memories of when my (all girl's school) had an annual hockey fixture against the parallel all-boys school (scratch team from their footie first XI and/or rugby first XV). We usually won, and it was the boys most dreaded fixture of any sport. Happy days!

cathpip · 25/03/2014 19:13

Hockey is how I met my dh, actually hockey Is how both my sisters met their dh's too :). The club socials are most definitely better!! Play against someone who is either not very good or new to the sport and you probably will get injured, I have been playing for nearly thirty years, my dh for the same amount of time and we have only had one trip to hospital, so far!

Ilovexmastime · 25/03/2014 19:17

I think rugby is more dangerous. I play hockey and a lot of the (younger) girls on my team also play rugby and it's the rugby that seems to lead to the worst injuries.

Taz1212 · 25/03/2014 19:23

Please don't say that! DS(11) has just started rugby and I hate watching him. DD(8) can't wait to start hockey and I was thinking I'd be all relaxed about the hockey...

Wantsunshine · 25/03/2014 19:23

Ha ha sounds like my DH must be rubbish at hockey. Maybe I should tell him not to catch the ball with his mouth. To be fair he has played for over 25 years and got loads of injuries in rugby too!

ThreeBeeOneGee · 25/03/2014 19:24

Lacrosse is the one you want to be careful of. Like hockey, but at eye level.

BadgersRetreat · 25/03/2014 19:26

Have you seen professional ice hockey?

VERY fighty Grin

yy lacrosse is vicious too.

TheOrchardKeeper · 25/03/2014 19:40

Doesn't get much worse than that

wonderingsoul · 25/03/2014 19:45

i would imagin ice hockey is worse.... thouse blades dude....

TheOrchardKeeper · 25/03/2014 19:45

(Though rugby seems just as bad).

Pleasejustgo · 25/03/2014 19:50

Oh god, I'm having flashbacks of cowering somewhere on the outer field while the Amazonians from our rival school came thundering towards me. I have the scar and a smashed thumb to this very day!

I was crap at hockey.

Indoor hockey just made me cry. Constantly. Just as useless at that Grin

However Victorix ludorum for athletics struts about proudly

Aww Corus Ouchy!

I forgot to put my gum shield in as a young teen once and had my teeth smashed. Luckily they all stay put but I had a very bloody mouth and nose, plus a split lip on upper and lower.

Not a pretty sight and I never played again Grin Hmm

TheFowlAndThePussycat · 25/03/2014 20:02

Don't know about rugby but DH plays hockey every week and the list of broken bones, cuts and bruises is endless, never mind removing all the skin off his arms & legs on a regular basis. Once he detached the tendon at the base of his thumb so that it bent fully backwards on itself. He had to have it reattached under GA.

Then there was the season that he played ice hockey in the states and dislocated his shoulder so badly that it has never been the same again...

Oh and there was the time one of his team mates running backwards in the warm up clashed DH's nose with the back of his head an broke the nose - a fellow player (a GP) reset it manually for him there are then in the changing room. Then he contracted blood poisoning from the wound.

Bloody vicious game Grin

NoMoreMuddyTrousers · 25/03/2014 20:05

My favourite with the hockey injuries is always when the team medic (there is always someone who is doing medicine) gets the job of doing the stitches on the side of the pitch or back at the club house. Practically a rite of passage on the men's teams.

AnonymousBird · 25/03/2014 20:05

I've been with my DH for nearly 20 years all in. The only times he has ever taken time off work or been to hospital (and had surgery) in that time is due to multiple rugby injuries. It is effing dangerous. Two weeks in a row, two guys dislocated their knees, which, thankfully, finally, persuaded him it was time to hang up his boots.

Can't comment on hockey, but can see that it could also be dangerous.

I played lacrosse, it was bloody great fun!! Though in my day, no one wore headgear or mouthguards other then the goalie and there were also lots of injuries!

Ponderfully · 25/03/2014 20:07

Try hurling. That'll put hair on your chest.

Wolfiefan · 25/03/2014 20:11

You know what they say?
Give blood. Play hockey!

MissCalamity · 25/03/2014 20:15

I love hockey Grin been playing since I was 11 (now 34) and I've only had a few trips to A & E, thankfully I have never broken anything. Rugby scares me, I think it's all the contact as hockey is (supposed) to be a contactless game.

I have had some stonking bruises over the years!

Really missing it as I'm currently 35 weeks pregnant & the thought of playing my first game after giving birth fills me with dread, hopefully after a week of not being able to walk I'll be back in the saddle again Grin

goodasitgets · 25/03/2014 20:18

Agree with lacrosse. Saying that I horse ride (have done for 26 years) and the time I managed a displaced open fracture and torn ligaments was caused by... A flight of stairs Confused
