Why do some people feel the need to put every little thing on it?

I don't get it.

Who cares if you,re going a walk, or watching something on telly...

And as for selfies, Jesus wept.

Get a bloody life.

oh I love a good FB thread

:o

NigellasDealer · 24/03/2014 10:22

"I think some people use it to spy on their 'friends'"
makes me laugh when people put every detail of their lives on what is essentially a public noticeboard and then accuse others of 'spying' on them!

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 24/03/2014 10:23

Haha Kaekae - I saw someone wearing a t-shirt the other day that said "the first sign of a healthy relationship is no mention of it on FB"! Made me chuckle.

mrsjay · 24/03/2014 10:25

i delete those Loons nigellas you know the ones where they accuse others of being nosey or their life has nothing to do with them well if they didnt put it all on facebook then well you know folk wouldnt stick their noses in Grin

I used to have 150 odd friends on facebook and my pet hate are a) too many selfies and b) passive aggressive statuses. The thing is I KNOW these people in real life. I know they don't look like that selfie. They choose flattering angles, good make up and a nice instagram filter and get tons of aww hun you are beautiful comments. Some people are so thirsty for a few likes it's unreal.

So I now only have 30 people on facebook and don't have my surname on there so tend not to get added by annoying people at work. I will only post when I have actual news (like when i announced we were expecting our second child) or if I've seen something in the news that's particuarly got to me. I can't stand the checking in option. Some people will start checking in for a poo soon.

EeeIcouldCrushAGrape · 24/03/2014 10:30

Just don't go on it then if it annoys you so much. Confused
Or at least learn how to hide people so you only get those on your newsfeed you're interested in!
I much prefer it when people DO post regular updates. 'cos I'm a nosey cah
I like to see what everyone's doing. It's called SOCIAL media. Duh. Grin
Although I must admit the passive aggressive shite does my head in.
"If you've got a problem with me, say it to mah FACE!"
Oh the irony of the divvies who don't twig that they're doing the exact same thing, lol. Grin

NigellasDealer · 24/03/2014 10:32

indeed mrsjay!
also some people use it for these kind of self pitying or attention seeking statuses - 'i have spent so long looking after everyone else - who is going to look after me' 'cannot trust anyone any more' cue flurry of 'you alright hun?xx'

youarewinning · 24/03/2014 10:33

I kind of see what your saying. Sometimes I think people put stuff just because they feel they should update their status.

However I've put things in there that says hat we are going to do. Eg my DS tried snowboarding at weekend so I updated to say he was looking forward to it - an easy way to tell vast numbers of people he was doing it and then that evening uploaded a video of him doing it.

People that gave a toss commented!

LastOneDancing · 24/03/2014 10:35

I had a 'clearout' and hid a lot of people which made FB a lot more enjoyable.

I hide rather than block because I still like these people and would speak to them in the street, I just get annoyed by the FB 'them' - I'm positive many of them feel the same about me, as I only post when I think I've hot something hilarious to say Grin (idiot)

Someone on here made the very good point that statuses on FB are like trying to start a conversation to all of your contacts all at once - in RL you wouldn't talk to your work colleague the same way as your Aunt Jean, so you can't be compatible with what everyone wants from FB.

Although recently one guy who openly complained a while ago that FB was 'all kittens and babies' now has a new GF and posts nothing but crap pictures with hashtags like #soinlove #made4eachother and I'm keeping him because it's like an itchy scab I can't stop picking.

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 24/03/2014 10:36

Yes, statuses like that can be annoying. But they don't require you to do anything! Just scroll on by! If the person is getting emotional support/validation which they are lacking IRL then good for them.

If someone has low self esteem, so posts flattering photos of themselves to get a few likes, then what's the harm! It makes them feel good.

horsetowater · 24/03/2014 10:36

I love facebook but it only works with people who are mutually open. I hide anyone who won't disclose anything personal, it's clear they are only involved to keep an eye on those that do disclose and I think that's a bit weird and unbalanced. I have rl friends who are too 'professional' to share anything on facebook. It pisses me off.

People that say 'yes I'm on fb but I never actually USE it'. Right.

Reminds me to do a good purge. And to set my sharing options to those who mutually share. I think it says a lot about a person whether they are prepared to be open with you or not.

Interestingly a lot of the less open people do Twitter. I can't stand twitter, not enough space for a good discussion, too snippy and snappy and affected.

differentnameforthis · 24/03/2014 10:38

They can do what they like. It's their space that they have invited you into. If you don't like it, you can hide it or delete them.

Would you tell them what to put on their walls in their homes? Or tell them what they can talk about in their homes?

No, probably not.

pictish · 24/03/2014 10:39

I agree that people use it in different ways. I have people on fb that share every burp and fart in their lives, but I know them to be great company in rl, so it doesn't bother me.
I'm an infrequent poster, as I'm not so inclined myself.

horsetowater · 24/03/2014 10:40

That's a good analogy - in some ways it is like walking into someone's front room. You can tell a lot about a person by the things they have, the things they choose to show.

Kaekae · 24/03/2014 10:41

I would love to delete it and have tried. But everyone else seems to need to use it to make up pages to communicate. We have a closed group on Facebook for parents, which I must admit is useful. I do find it sad though when I am out in a restaurant and strangers all around me have their heads down looking at their mobile. No one talks face to face anymore it seems!

OpalQuartz · 24/03/2014 10:41

Someone I went to school with I had unfollowed for a while as her posts were annoying. (Lots of boasting.) I had a look at her profile yesterday to see if I wanted to follow her again and she had posted six times yesterday!

horsetowater · 24/03/2014 10:42

I can't be doing with people who put xxxxxx after every post either. Sorry, maybe I'm old-fashioned.

Sparklysilversequins · 24/03/2014 10:42

No Confused

WholeNutt · 24/03/2014 10:42

I wonder sometimes if some are using it as a diary!

horsetowater · 24/03/2014 10:45

Wholenutt I think that's exactly what it is to me. It is like a scrapbook. Events, birthdays, what I've done and been to are all there. I'm glad I have used it that way as I would have never used an analogue scrapbook.

horsetowater · 24/03/2014 10:50

I don't get the whole 'life affirmation' thing though - people who post memes of wisdom. I remember people used to buy them and stick them on the wall, or fridge. A bit sad I think. These things should be in your head and be expressed by actions rather than vacuous words written in swirly writing over litter of puppies.

Actions always speak louder than words and you can post your ideology about 'true friendship' til kingdom come but if you treat your 'true friends' the way some people do then it counts for zilch.

TheBigBumTheory · 24/03/2014 10:52

I'm not on it because I prefer to do other things in my spare time.

I get a lot of pressure to join from friends, they keep on explaining how I can adjust the feed to avoid x y and z happening. They just don't get that I don't want to be on it, even though I've been very blunt when explaining. It comes up at least a few times a week.

I would never go on and on at them about why they don't want to learn the piano, take up skating or whatever.

CheesyBadger · 24/03/2014 11:09

I like Facebook in part, some bits annoy me but I do like keeping in touch on it. I don't mind the endless updates as this is just the rhythm some people get in with it, but do dislike the leading updates

E.g. Had enough Hmm

Responses - oh why babe? Or
You don't deserve him etc etc when 99% of the people reading it are left in the dark

DoJo · 24/03/2014 11:15

If your friends are dull and overshare, then your Facebook will be full of dull oversharing statuses. If you think those people should get a life, then consider why you are friends with them, as that reflects on your choices more than it does theirs. Facebook itself is not the problem.
