I swear to god I'm going to murder DH if he says this one more time.

How hard. You don't say "Carsh" instead of crash, or "Cerrp" instead of creep. Why do people insist on saying "Ceration/curative/curator" instead of creation/tive/tor?

I watched a colleague totally lose his shit about the incorrect (medical) use of regimen and regime! He started off quite politely but got louder and louder and ended with "so it's REGIMEN for drugs and REGIME for the military. FIR FUCKS SAKE I WILL GO FUCKING BANANAS IF I HEAR IT WRONG AGAIN!"Shock

Given his performance we all wondered what "fucking bananas" might be like...

wishingchair · 24/03/2014 09:32

My DH gets super irritated when people mix up haggle and barter (them: "Ooo I got a bargain with this, I bartered for it". Him: "so you offered them some shells and a chicken in return for that handbag did you???!!"). Equally enraging for him is skim and scan. "I didn't have time to look at the document properly, I just scanned it". "Right! So you committed every single letter to memory did you? In manner of a scanner???!! No! You SKIMMED it!!"

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 24/03/2014 09:37

Heh you're going to get it a lot of they're playing minecraft... and once something like that is under your skin it just gets more and more irritating!

Skimming and scanning are both speed reading techniques.
Skimming is a quick read for gist.
Scanning is a quick read for a particular piece of information.
In that instance the person was wrong and meant skimming, however scanning doesn't mean detailed reading either.

It's OK I'm making sure DS says create properly if I have to listen to minecraft talk for the next 10 years Grin

I could not live with this.

My old boss said things like 'generally' instead of 'genuinely' etc. It's just bone idleness.

BertieBotts · 24/03/2014 09:44

Although DH did manage to teach him "traahsers" for trousers. That isn't even a local thing, it sounds cockney. No idea where he got it from.

My ex used to say happibly. (Gaaaaah!) Also used to mix up probably and properly. Which is extra annoying when it actually makes sense in the sentence but changes the meaning. "It will properly kill him." OK it's still a slang way of using the word but annoying.

Ooh ooh and saying "install" instead of "instil".

wishingchair · 24/03/2014 10:06

Cashmiriana - thank you!!! I will delight in informing him he was wrong all along!!

Allergictoironing · 24/03/2014 10:08

EverythingsDozy watch the adverts for the TV series "Suits", it's sort of a bit like s'yoots (short y).

Yep suite is pronounced like sweet (it's from the French).

RunDougalRunQuiteFast · 24/03/2014 11:10

How about 'chaise lounge'?! And the Bucks accent quite close to here says 'ax' instead of ask, as in, I was only axing him ...

Allergictoironing · 24/03/2014 11:22

I was once corrected by someone for using the written abbreviation "M.C." for Master of Ceremonies. I was told in no uncertain terms that the correct title for the role was "EmCee". Turns out a lot of events in the USA do actually use the term with that spelling, but it doesn't make it any more correct. Despite trying to explain that EmCee was based on people using M.C. as the abbreviation for Master of Ceremonies, the other person was adamant that their version was the correct one & I was completely wrong.

Wabbitty · 24/03/2014 11:27

People that incorrectly say scon (to rhyme with gone) instead of scone (like cone but with an s in front)

floofyapogo · 24/03/2014 11:29

I say 'scon' to rhyme with 'gone' and I'm Scottish!

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 24/03/2014 11:33

Entree for main course - no! (Sorry, can't do the accent here but there should obviously be one.)

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 24/03/2014 11:40

Scone pronunciation is often argued. Both are right!

sashh · 24/03/2014 11:54

But to be patronisingly told by someone that they HAD to get Panadol as paracetamol wouldn't be as good despite both packets saying they had the identical ingredients, or the same with Neurofen/ibuprofen, makes me scream.

I was once told quite seriously that not only did one painkiller not work but only boots own brand version did. I screamed too.

And what is it with the BBC and saying secetary instead of secretary?

Flopsy28 · 24/03/2014 17:28

On radio one I often hear 'sick form' for sixth form. .. drives me batty. Time to finally switch to radio 2 methinks x

WitchWay · 24/03/2014 17:37

yes wishingchair shooge for huge - aargh - Chris Evans does it on the radio all the time - grrr

Lots of media people say "Pleece" with one syllable instead of "Police" with two syllables - hate it!!!

My DH cannot say Optometrist - she goes regularly for checks. It's opTOMutrist not op-tuh-MET-trist - aargh

WitchWay · 24/03/2014 17:37

DM not DH

Kittymautz · 24/03/2014 17:51

Love this thread!

One of my current pet hates is people saying 'corter' for 'quarter'. I hear it pronounced that way very often by announcers etc on TV. It drives me nuts!

Beautyandthefeast · 24/03/2014 18:00

I called suet "sue-ay" for months before I realised how it was pronounced. Still cringe at how Hyacinth Bucket I must have sounded...

alsmutko · 24/03/2014 18:05

People who say 'could of' or 'should of'.
People on the radio who say 'shtudio'.
Then there's always 'Parkistarn'.
Grrr.

WitchWay · 24/03/2014 18:13

Oh YES corter for quarter - grrr

DM always says Holibut for Halibut - she prob thinks it sounds posher - bit snooty - it actually an accepted variant spelling but I've never heard anyone else use it even the fishmonger
