to sneak DTs into hotel room?

Posting for traffic really.

We have 3DC, DS (4yo) and DTs (22m). We need an overnight stop on the way to our holiday. planning to stay with a chain hotel and I know the room is big enough to fit 2 travel cots in. the hotel however have a strict 2 adults 2 kids policy.

has anyone done the sneaking the extra child in method to avoid having to pay for 2 rooms? it just seems mad to pay for an extra room when there is space in one room for us.

any thoughts?

I wouldn't even think twice about doing this.

mrsjay · 22/03/2014 14:01

is it the 5 you dont want to pay for or is it the hotel wont let you have 5 in the room I dont think i am understanding

DrankSangriaInThePark · 22/03/2014 14:01

You won't be able to do it then if it's France, because you have to hand over your passports at hotel receptions (or at least you did the last time I was there, a couple of years ago) No sneaking anywhere.

I think, if you think about fire regs and insurance, it's probably worth examining your conscience as well to ask yourself, what if the fire crew were told there was one baby in the room, not two?

There's your decision then.

Finola1step · 22/03/2014 14:01

I am the youngest of 3. Having a family of 5 has always incurred additional costs to that of a family of 4. I remember my parents going on about it fairly regularly as a child and esp as a teenager. It's a bit crap but there you go.

The hotel has clearly said no and the reason is very reasonable. YWBU to try to flout their fire regs to save some cash. Cough up for two rooms. Do they have any adjoining rooms so that you and DH can each be with dc but still be only next door. Or the main driver could have the best sleeper.

QueenofKelsingra · 22/03/2014 14:04

I wouldn't mind if it was just paying a supplement for the extra. but a whole extra room for 4 for 1 person? it is so so hard to find something that caters for 5 - if they had a room for 5 I would pay for it!!

and even if we got 2 rooms, we would still have 2 travel cots in one room as the DTs wont sleep apart so wont we be breaking fire regs anyway?

mummym there is a difference between hotel rooms and plane seats!!

I can't believe the OP is considering this, the mind boggles. Grin

mrsjay · 22/03/2014 14:05

I just read it again you are not allowed 5 people in the room I guess you will need to either pay for another or try and find something else, I wouldt risk it

notso · 22/03/2014 14:05

I know loads of people who do this kind of thing. A mum from school has 7 DC but only ever books one hotel room for 4 or 5 always on the ground floor and they sneak the remaining kids through the windows Hmm

Having to pay for extra rooms is a PITA we have 4 DC so feel your pain, it is just one of those annoying things though.

The fire regs aren't about how much space 2 babies take up.

They are about insurance. (Imagine if every room in the place had extra people sneaked in?) And about the fact that the fire crews know how many people are supposed to be there.

You aren't just being tight now, you are being a bit disingenuous.

QueenofKelsingra · 22/03/2014 14:08

drank i understand your point about the fire risks. actually I'd forgotten about the passport thing too, been a while since we needed a stopover there.

I'm googling around a bit further off our route to see if i can find anything that can solve it.

annoyingly i do have a conscience so i expect that will win out. hopefully i can find something else that works as i just cant justify 2 rooms for one extra cot!

OP posts:
QueenofKelsingra · 22/03/2014 14:09

is the fire regs about people per room or having 2 cots? as the hotel said we couldn't have 2 cots in the room, i assumed it was both criteria??

I used to work for a hotel chain. If something happens and it is discovered they are overfilling rooms then their insurance becomes invalid . Then where will you be.

QueenofKelsingra · 22/03/2014 14:12

and it isn't about being 'tight' or wanting DC3 to be 'free' - if there was a room available for 5 i would pay for it, or pay an extra person supplement.

will look for another option elsewhere.

QueenofKelsingra · 22/03/2014 14:14

leggings i get that, i do, but i do not need space for 8 people which is what this hotel is asking me to pay for.

i didn't realise about the fire regs thing so i will look for a different solution although at the rate of progress the solution will be DH in hotel room with kids and me kipping in the car

poopadoop · 22/03/2014 14:15

I know it is annoying but I think seeing as you phoned them directly to ask, you can't really do it with a clear conscience.
There are so many cheap hotel chains in france - this article is old but most of the chains still exist and we found it invaluable - www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/730804/The-Sophie-Butler-report-Overnight-stops-in-France.html

Dancergirl · 22/03/2014 14:17

OP, some b and bs have family rooms that take 5. We've done this before and they've been reasonable in price. You might have to do a bit of research and phone around though.

NoodleOodle · 22/03/2014 14:17

I would do as you are, keep looking for somewhere else but, if you can't find anything, book it and sneak the extra baby in.

spongebob13 · 22/03/2014 14:20

u have an extra bonus of them being twins ... can do a parent trap and say its the one baby! lol I would do it, its only for one night ... the only thing I would be worried about is that your phonecall is on file and they might be on the look out for you sleeping 5 instead of 4 (if you gave your name etc)

enjoy your holiday.

jamaisjedors · 22/03/2014 14:22

There are loads of family rooms in France for 5- after all, 3 children is pretty much the norm.

But I do know people who have sneaked an extra one into a Formula One hotel (3 beds) - automatic check-in so no checking passports...

Bornin1984 · 22/03/2014 14:22

Can you not
Book the family
Room and a double? One parent with the twins and the other parent with the elder child?

Forago · 22/03/2014 14:25

i do this all the time in Premier Inns over here but have the little one in the double bed with us - no extra bed which I think is the fire risk (blocking exits, room too crowded to escape etc)
