To think pretending to be pregnant on Facebook isn't funny?

Today one of my friends posted this status on Facebook:
"Guess it was too good to be true... im pregnant!"

People were getting excited and emotional and congratulating her. Someone asked how far along she was and she said 8 weeks. I was a bit concerned because it didn't sound like she was thrilled about it and I know she's been having a difficult time recently so it wouldn't be the best timing but I put congratulations because I wanted to be supportive and she sent me this message:

"sorry u should not have liked or commented on my status so now its ur turn Now you have to pick one of the 14 below and post to your status. This is the 2014 breast cancer awareness game. Don't be a spoil sport choose you poison, and change your status xxx 1) Damn diarrhea 2) Just used my boobs to get out of a speeding ticket 3) Anyone have a tampon, I'm out 4) How do you get rid of foot fungus 5) Why is nobody around when I'm horny? 6) No toilet paper goodbye socks! Post with no explanations. 7)Someone offered me a job as a prostitute but I'm hesitant. 8)I think I'm in love with someone what should I do? 9)I've decided 2 stop wearing underwear. 10)I still love my ex. 11)I really don't know how 2 tell anyone and I'm sick of hiding it I'm gay. 12)Guess it was 2 good 2 b true I'm pregnant. 13)Just won $7000 on a scratchy. 14)I've just found out I've been cheated on for the past 5 months.Post with no explanations."

Some of those statuses are just stupid but some of them, like saying you are pregnant or have been cheated on could tug on people's heartstrings. I was concerned so I can't imagine how her close friends and family felt! I think pregnancy is a life changing event and not something to joke about.

AIBU to think this isn't funny (and doesn't raise cancer awareness) and am I being a spoilsport not to take part?

This in no way helps anyone who has cancer and is rubbing salt in the wounds of anyone struggling with miscarriage or infertility. They should be forced to donate to both cancer and infertility charities to make up for their gross stupidity and insensitivity.

Daddypigsgusset · 22/03/2014 09:16

My boobs did get me out of a speeding ticket recently. And I posted on fb about it. Now everyone probably thinks I'm a bigger twat for joining in these pointless games than they thought I was for speeding. Eurghh

Maltese it sounds like you are suggesting we all start oppressing local girls with terror techniques! Not quite sure what you are getting at!

What I mean is, while many of us slide into a coma pissing around on Facebook, watching soaps and generally getting fatter and stupider, plenty of evildoers in the world are taking advantage of the fact that almost no one has the courage or the will the stand up to them anymore.

I ardently believe that there's a link between the rise of moronic media such as Twitter (which encourages armchair pontificating and inaction) and the growth of general ignorance, often wilful, about the horrific shit that is going on and is being brewed up against us.

Take fundamentalist terrorists, who are quite open about their aims, but we generally close our ears, preferring to denounce Putin, 'cos it's easy (he's an evil Russian, innit). This conveniently ignores the fact that that leader has been rather active in hunting down those fundamentalists, who have committed some appalling atrocities on Russian soil, and draws attention away from the negligence, apathy and self-absorption of our Western leaders (Obama on the Ellen Degeneres show discussing selfies, anyone?), which reflect those of a large and ever-growing swathe of our useless public.

Sorry to get so serious. But it's unpleasant to think how far it'll have to go before these people will be shaken out of their idiotic, torpid ignorance.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 22/03/2014 09:27

Hmm, I do know what you mean. Globalisation seems to have made people less informed rather than more aware.

Slainte · 22/03/2014 09:42

Also, this whole "raising awareness" business - is there anyone in the whole world who isn't aware of cancer? I'm steadfastly behind raising money for cancer charities but not just silly statuses that achieve nothing.

ComposHat · 22/03/2014 10:19

Like most people I am well aware of cancer and its effects. I don't see how posting shite statuses will help a single individual one iota.

juneybean · 22/03/2014 10:22

Yikes hot on the heels of the selfies. I'm well aware of cancer without people posting shit on Facebook. Thankfully I haven't seen anyone do the game in the OP!

Sallyingforth · 22/03/2014 10:27

Facebook is just for morons

Yes that sums it up pretty well.

EeeIcouldCrushAGrape · 22/03/2014 10:29

Well, that explains a couple of people on their newsfeed telling the world they're horny today if this is doing the rounds again. Hmm
I just ignore them, as they remind me of those annoying chain mails you used to get years ago - this is just the modern day version!

BalloonSlayer · 22/03/2014 10:30

Post back "Well you've certainly raised my idiot awareness. Thanks for the heads up. xx"

UncleT · 22/03/2014 10:39

What a grade A twat. That kind of vacuous, deceptive shit makes me curse the day I was railroaded into hooking up with everyone on that wretched bloody site. What the hell is wrong with people sharing this sort of bollocks all the time?? Such 'games' have nothing to do with cancer, they just piss people off.

MinistryofStrewth · 22/03/2014 10:42

I've seen a few of these statuses and reckoned it was something stupid like that. There was something similar doing the rounds a few months ago, I'd commented on a friend's as she'd posted about being on a tv show and got a message saying to choose and post a status.. I ignored it.

I finally got round to deleting my fb account after this bare-faced selfies business as God forbid I didn't do it but posted a link saying I'd donated money instead. Crime of the century according to a friend Confused Been thinking about it for months as it's become the ultimate up your own arse, narcissistic nonsense.

beals692 · 22/03/2014 10:55

Glad I read this thread as a friend has just posted one of these statuses so I won't respond!

Notafoodbabyanymore · 22/03/2014 10:55

I have one young mate of 18 years old who recently raised over 3000 pounds for cancer research by shaving off her long, beautiful hair. I have another lovely friend who is doing a charity bike ride to raise money for the same cause . (She recently lost her beautiful mum to cancer.)

These are the sort of acts which make a difference. Not bullshit statuses.

pluCaChange · 22/03/2014 11:02

Quite, quite, themaltesefalcon!

Even worse, hanging around "in" Facebook (or MN Blush) means dwelling in an environment where we can be sold to! (in my defence, I would hardly speak to any adults some days, were it not for MN)

Topaz25 · 22/03/2014 11:55

I'm tempted to tell her she's an idiot but I don't want the drama and I'm sure someone else will do it for me!

OP posts:
brainwashed · 22/03/2014 14:29

I made the mistake of responding to one of these statuses a few weeks ago...one about a tattoo so a bit more believable. When I was told I had to change my status I just said I don't take part in silly Facebook games.Just like I didn't do chain letters once I'd grown up enough not to believe that something bad would happen if I didn't!!

PublicEnemyNumeroUno · 22/03/2014 14:40

Thank fuck im not on Facebook, i seriously couldn't be arsed with such nonsense.

Pregnantberry · 22/03/2014 14:49

I would be tempted to leave a response reminding her that some women can't get pregnant because of having had certain kinds of cancer, so it is totally inappropriate and disrespectful to joke about this in the name of helping cancer patients.

Doinmummy · 22/03/2014 15:27

I've just seen a pic on face book of a male family member , naked with a sock on his penis. WTAF!

FabBakerGirl · 22/03/2014 15:41

Part of our country is dumbing down. I worry about the kind of world my children are growing up in. A woman in a very short skirt, singing, and the camera is panning right up her dress. Why? Well, I know why but how have we got into such a state that that is okay. I am sick of seeing women with their arses and breasts out, Rhianna and Miley Cyrus are such a bad example to young girls. I am so glad my dd has her head screwed on and knows her own mind. She doesn't follow anyone and is confident in her own opinions.

We seem to have a generation of self obsessed people and it is awful. Too much reality tv crap, instant fame and fortune. Old fashioned values are sadly missing.

Topaz25 · 22/03/2014 16:28

That would be cock in a sock, for testicular cancer awareness. I think it started as a joking response to the no make up selfies and then unfortunately some people took it seriously!

OP posts:
CuttingOutTheCrap · 22/03/2014 16:34

Ah this explains why someone on my feed has 'no toilet paper - good bye socks' status. I did wonder! Some of those statuses are really beyond the joke

Topaz25 · 22/03/2014 16:35

Pregnantberry, that's a very good point!

KitKat1985 · 22/03/2014 16:36

This links very well into a thread I posted yesterday about tasteless cancer campaigns. YANBU OP. Some of those comments are upsetting for other people. And can't see how it's got sod all to do with cancer awareness.
