That's it really. It's put me off the place tbh.

How can people believe that all dogs are filthy and that you will catch something from them? Dogs are filthy and covered in fur. They are animals not humans. I think a lot of dog owners forget this because so many treat their pets like people. Not everyone wants a dog germs all over where they are sitting or eating. You chose to have a pet then fine, keep it in your house and take it for walks outside (lots of space out in the open) but bringing it into a cafe'/pub is like making everyone else accept that you have an animal and have to put up with it. I wouldn't complain if I willing went into a pub/cafe knowing it was "dog friendly" though.

People build up a tolerance /resistance to their own dogs, which is why they're not ill all the time. I never go near dogs if I can help it. I'm asthmatic and I feel horrendous every time we stay with SIL who lets her dogs sit on their sofas...meaning I can't sit anywhere except their wooden dining benches, hard as nails

It would put me right off a cafe if I saw this, I would complain, so YANBU

I had a run in with a very rude woman a few weeks ago, getting my hair done. She came in for a 2 hour blow dry (seriously) with two enormous dogs. I couldn't believe my eyes but apparently she does it every week and 'no one's complained before'. I asked for them to be taken away from the basins, I couldn't relax with the thought of them jumping up on me. No doubt nursey would view this as 'hysterical' rather than a perfectly reasonable expectation that I can spend £200 odd getting my hair done in hygienic surroundings!

And I had to ask the staff to wash their hands...the juniors were stroking the dog and then waving me to the basin so they could touch my head with the same hand UGH!!

I know what you mean Saltysnack fellow asthmatic here

lucycoco · 22/03/2014 07:32

"People build up a tolerance /resistance to their own dogs, which is why they're not ill all the time."

Had to laugh at this bit of "science". You do realise that's not true, right? God I hope so.

Also, if you're asthmatic or allergic, I feel for you, but that doesn't make the triggers for your allergy or asthma dirty or unhygienic. Any more than nuts are 'dirty' because some people are allergic to them.

MrsDavidBowie · 22/03/2014 07:58

Oh I don't like that cafe.
So relieved it wasn't cafe Paulo or Bill's , where I normally have coffee in Richmond.

I'll be straight round there. Sounds like my sort of place, and none of you dog haters either. Great.

KittensoftPuppydog · 22/03/2014 20:53

Btw Partyon, humans are animals. Didn't you not know that?

ExitPursuedByABear · 22/03/2014 20:59

You will die.

Chippednailvarnish · 22/03/2014 20:59

I treat my dogs as I would my children

I would as well, except I've never noticed my kids licking their own genitals or sniffing each others arses.

YANBU OP.

coffeeinbed · 22/03/2014 21:00

It won't bother me a bit.
Toddlers aren't much cleaner.

KittensoftPuppydog · 22/03/2014 21:02

There are several dog friendly places locally and they are always full.

KittensoftPuppydog · 22/03/2014 21:02

Disgraceful bullying of a local business, though.

KittensoftPuppydog · 22/03/2014 21:04

And I've never seen a dog having its nappy changed in a cafe either.
Yes, I have seen this happening with small humans.

expatinscotland · 22/03/2014 21:08

Yuk. I'd have left.

KittensoftPuppydog · 22/03/2014 21:11

Glad to see you go.

ceres · 22/03/2014 21:48

"I'm not a dog person anyway but don't like the thought of staying in a hotel that welcomes dogs either. Put them in kennels!"

if you are not a dog person don't go to places that are dog friendly - most cafes and hotels aren't, so it really shouldn't be too difficult for you.

I would never put my dog in a kennels. my dog, my choice.

limitedperiodonly · 22/03/2014 22:04

I never consume food in homes where the cats are allowed to run riot all over the kitchen counters either!

So that's nowhere with a cat then? Grin Though there is someone on MN who says her cat doesn't do it. I can't remember her name but I've no reason to disbelieve her. I had a cat who didn't steal or pester for food. Even if you left him alone with a cooked chicken he'd wait to be given some. No one believed me, though. It was very unusual and we didn't tempt him too often. But a couple of times we forgot and that's how we realised.

The cat I have now climbs on kitchen surfaces but funnily enough, not when I'm preparing food. It's because he wants to be on a level with me and chat - he's very vocal and friendly.

He doesn't pester either. He doesn't seem interested in my food. I used to throw him things but stopped because he ignored them except for mackerel and chicken.

I don't leave chopping boards, plates or cutlery where he can touch them and I always clean surfaces before preparing food. But then you'd do that anyway, wouldn't you? Maybe some people wouldn't, whether they had marauding cats or not.

I understand what you mean though. I wouldn't like a dog on a sofa in a cafe because not for hygiene but because I don't like hairs on my clothes.

I don't appreciate humans putting their feet on seats or standing alongside me in waxed jackets on public transport either.

My cat is banned from my bedroom and where I keep my clothes and I get changed when I come in.

Wouldn't mind a quiet dog under a table at all though. I'm sure I've eaten in far worse health hazards without even realising.

Sorry, I keep doing long, self-indulgent rambles about my fascinating life lately Grin

NurseyWursey · 22/03/2014 22:05

It's funny when people bang on about germs when half of them probably bite their nails, flush the loo with the seat up...

withextradinosaurs · 22/03/2014 22:14

My dog doesn't sniff other dogs arses. Would he be allowed in the cafe?

Hawkshaw · 22/03/2014 22:19

I would not like this at all because I'm very allergic to dogs. One sitting on the other side of a room on the floor would bother me only a little (obviously I'd choose to sit well away from any dog), but sitting on a sofa that a dog had been sitting on would probably make me feel pretty unwell. I think it's pretty selfish, tbh.

And I live in Richmond and am quite put off visiting that café now. I've been there before and liked it.

NurseyWursey · 22/03/2014 22:23

I'm allergic to cats but take an antihistamine everyday so it doesn't effect me because I never know when I'm going to come into contact with someone who has a cat. Would this help you at all or is your allergy too strong?

Hawkshaw · 22/03/2014 22:27

I do actually take quite strong antihistamines every day (proper prescription only stuff) for another allergy which produces hives and weeping sores rather than just wheezing and sneezing. But dogs and horses still bother me, unfortunately. Luckily, I rarely meet a horse, living in a large city, because they are even worse than dogs!

Hawkshaw · 22/03/2014 22:28

Also, I'd just like to say that I'm completely unconcerned by the germs, seeing as how I'm quite able to wash myself.

NurseyWursey · 22/03/2014 22:30

Oh dear. I'm glad I'm not allergic to dogs because I love them. I'd be gutted.
